THE CONSEP HOLLAND CARBON REGENERATION KILN
Fulfilling the need for efficient and
reliable carbon regeneration, the
ConSep Holland Carbon
Regeneration Kiln is manufactured
in Australia using the very latest
technology available. The Consep
Holland Carbon Regeneration kiln
represents worlds best practice in
carbon regeneration.
The shell length and diameter of
the Consep Holland kiln has been
optimised to perform specific
functions in separate zones,
namely:

Drying zone fitted with lifters, with sufficient residence time to efficiently remove all entrained moisture in the
carbon.
Organic Volatilisation zone to remove organic foulants.
Reaction zone to reactivate the carbon.
Cooling zone to reduce carbon exit temperature prior to quenching.

All of these zones have been designed to ensure that each step of the carbon regeneration process, from feed to
discharge, is given sufficient residence time, with minimised carbon bed depths and maximised mixing through the
use of lifters, to ensure that the efficiency of reactivation is maximised.
As an example, if the drying zone is too short or inefficient, such that the
carbon still contains entrained moisture when it enters the reactivation
zone, the rapid vaporisation of the entrained moisture can result in cracks
and fractures within the carbon. These weaknesses in the carbon result in
increased susceptibility to attrition and carbon fines generation, and
increased carbon losses. One of the major issues is that fractured carbon
will not be screened out, and in its weakened state, can be turned into
fines within the CIP process. This leads to increased gold losses with
carbon fines, which can be a significant source of gold loss in any gold
plant.
The kiln is also optimised for diameter, which ensures minimised carbon
depth, and maximised contact of the carbon and the kiln shell. It also
ensures that the lifters achieve efficient cascading of the carbon to
improve contact of the carbon and the countercurrent gas phase. Together
these result in significantly improved performance of the regeneration
process.

The high efficiency design

of the Consep Holland
Carbon Regeneration Kiln
results in a reduction in
carbon losses, gold losses
with carbon fines, and
improved activity of
carbon, which in turn result
in improved CIP gold
recoveries at lower
operating costs.

The countercurrent gas phase is enriched with steam generated by the addition of water through a spray nozzle at
the discharge end of the kiln. This steam aids in cooling the carbon and plays a crucial role in the reactivation of the
carbon by reacting with and breaking down long organic molecules into smaller volatiles. Kilns without steam
injection provide reactivation conditions that are far from optimal.

THE CONSEP HOLLAND CARBON REGENERATION KILN
The key for successful carbon
regeneration also comes from a detailed
understanding of the processing plant that
the kiln will be installed within. The correct
design kiln for a standard CIP plant may
not be ideal for a plant utilizing flotation.
As can be seen from the typical carbon
activity graph given to the right, with a
focus on correct design of the kiln, to
maximise steam partial pressures,
maintain the correct temperature, and
design for the right residence time, the
relative activity of carbon can be
significantly improved.

Flotation plants, who typically utilize xanthates and frothers that foul activated carbon, need more aggressive
regeneration conditions, with higher temperatures and steam partial pressures, to drive off the difficult to remove
flotation reagents. With careful design to optimize temperature, steam partial pressure and residence time, the
frother and collectors, together with other foulants, can be removed efficiently.
The high efficiency design of the Consep
Holland Carbon Regeneration Kiln results
in a reduction in carbon losses, gold
losses with carbon fines, and improved
activity of carbon, which in turn result in
improved CIP gold recoveries at lower
operating costs.
The Consep Holland Kiln includes a
complete system of process control, with
as standard, an Allen Bradley PLC and
colour operator interface driving the
process, including the burners, variable
speed feeder and shell drive.
