SHORT ANSWER

13. Why do magnetic poles always occur in pairs?

Its like an arrow, the domains all align so that the arrowhead is always
facing the same direction and the tails always face the same way. Therefore
even if the magnet breaks, it will maintain the same orientation.

14. Will the magnets in the figure above attract or repel each other?
They will repel, because like repels like.

15. What are the benefits of having a magnetic field surrounding Earth?
Our magnetic field protects and shields us from radiation, it keeps the
atmosphere from blowing away from the solar wind and protects our
electronic equipment from solar interference.

16. How often does the magnetic field reverse? What happens when the field
reverses?
The field reverses once every 200,000 yrs. We are overdue for a reversal and
the last time the field reversed was 780,000 yrs ago. When the field reverses
birds and other migratory animals will have trouble navigating, our satellites
will be interrupted and there will be increased radiation and cancer rates.

17. Find the direction of the force on a proton moving through

the magnetic field shown on the right.
Force is upward.
18. The magnetic field of a bar magnet is shown in the figure to
the right. Is the magnets north pole at A or B?
The North is at point A because the field
lines come out of it.

PROBLEM

20. An electron moves north at a velocity of 9.8 104 m/s and has a magnetic
force of 5.6 1018 N west exerted on it. If the magnetic field points upward,
what is the magnitude of the magnetic field? What is the radius of the
electrons path?
B = 3.57 E -4 T
r = 1.56 E -3 m

21. The overhead power wire for streetcar trolley is strung 10 meters above the
ground, in an east-west direction. If the wire carries a positive, conventional
current of 120 amps, moving east to west, what is the direction and magnitude
of the magnetic field directly under the wire?
B = 2.4 E -6 T South
If the current flows from East to West -------- then there will be X on top
and Dots on the bottom. The dots will be coming towards you, which
would be South on a compass.

22. Given that 3 amps of current run through the 3.5 cm loop shown to the right,
find:
a. The strength of the magnetic field at the
center of the loop.
B = 5.38 E -5 T

b. Since the magnetic field of a current-carrying loop resembles that of a bar

magnet, is the north pole of the current-carrying loop above or below the loop?
