Question 5
Read the poem below carefully. Then, answer questions (a) (d).
News Break
Now why so loving, darling,
And why the sudden kiss?
You help me with some little jobs?
For goodness sake, what's this?
Your face is clean for once, dear.
Your clothes without a crease.
You saved your luncheon money?
Will wonder never cease?
No dropping of your school books,
No shrieking, childish treble.
Today you are a lamb, love,
Where yesterday a rebel.
But surely you're some stranger,
No rage or hullabaloo.
Come closer, let me look, dear,
Can this be really you?
Now were you struck by lightning
Or were you stunned at sport?
Ah... now I see the reason.
You've brought your school report!

During the last school holidays, my classmate and I went to Starlight Nursing Home. It is
situated about 5km away from our school. We left for the home on a chartered bus at 7.30am.
We reached the home at 9.30am and were greeted by the caretaker of the home, Mr. Shah. He
told us about life of the residents there. He said that our visit was indeed timely for the residents.
We were then taken to the living area where we met all the residents of the home. We had
planned some interesting activities for them. We had a song-along session. Our classmate Chong,
played the guitar as we sang along which the residents enjoyed very much. We also played some
indoor games such as chess, Scrabble and Monopoly with the residents.
Then we had lunch with the residents. Some of the residents were too old and weak to feed
themselves, so we helped them. Then, we washed the dishes and cleaned up the dining area. After
that we stayed and chatted with the residents for a while.
Before we left, we took a group photograph with the caretakers and the residents there.
They thanked us for the great moment. We definitely had a good time at the home and promised to
visit them again soon. Finally we returned in the evening and reached our school at 6 pm.
