Chapter I

Introduction:
Due to pressing political and environmental factors. The entire world is looking for alternative
energy sources. For decades scientists been researching everything from photovoltaic cells to
solar troughs in an effort to find ways to use clean renewable resources to generate power. Many
of this break troughs can be expensive and difficult to maintain for such little power output
compared with the traditional power generation. In an energy deficient world, it is strongly felt
that the use of solar energy a possible source is not being fully utilized. So an attempt to deploy
its use, a novel concept of Solar Powered Stirling Engine is introduced in this paper. The
stirling engine used here runs using solar power from the heat of the magnifying glass. Stirling
engine is unique in its sense that it uses only two pistons for its operation to produce motoring
action unlike the conventional motors. A stirling engine is basically a heat engine that operates
by cyclic compression and expansion of air or other gas, the working fluid, at the different
temperature levels such that there is a net conversion of heat energy to mechanical work. This
solar powered stirling engine is coupled with a generator /dynamo to produce power. The
dynamo is usually an electrical generator that produces direct current with the use of
commutator. The sterling engine is noted for its high efficiency (up to 40%), quit operation, and
the ease with which it can use almost any heat source. It has the ability to utilized effectively
any burnable fuel, such as wood, rice husk, straw, agricultural waste and other readily available
and cheap combustibles. This compatibility with alternative and renewable energy sources has
become increasingly significant as the price of conventional fuel rise. This method of power
production has no pollution because it only uses the heat of the sun.

The focal point of this study is to design and fabricate solar powered stirling engine, using
magnifying glass to maximize the heat by increasing thermal concentration in order to attain the
heat needed to operate stirling engine.

Review of related studies:
A review was conducted by the researchers of different studies which were found to be closely
interrelated to the present to the present study in terms of concepts, design, objectives, utilization
and evaluation of the research project.
Roel J. Meijer (1987) develop a solar powered sterling engine to generate electricity from solar
power by utilizing the overall combination of a solar dish collector, a hot gas engine, and an
electric generator. In general the dish is aimed at the sun to reflect incident sunlight onto the
receiver which is located at the dish focus. The heat energy so collected is utilized to drive the
hot gas engine such as sterling engine, which is mounted adjacent the receiver. The engine in
turn drives the generator to create the electric power.

Statement of the problem:
1. What size of magnifying glass needed in order to attain the heat to run the engine?
2. What could be the possible output of the engine?
3. What tine needed to charge the battery?

Chapter IV
Significance of the study:
This study will be helpful to isolated areas having no electricitys, it could minimize the current
bill. Environmental friendly, it has no toxic chemicals, it has low maintenance and the overall
components are economical to buy.
Chapter V
Scope and limitations:
This study focused on the development of solar powered stirling engine using magnifying glass
or fresnel lens.
