Trains

The railroad was one of the most important inventions in the history of transportation and it was
particularly central to the development of the United States.
Trains are built to transport passengers or cargo along rail tracks.
Trains can be powered by a variety of energy sources including steam, diesel and electricity.
Early trains relied on ropes, horses or gravity.
The use of steam locomotives developed through the 19th century before diesel and electric
locomotives began to replace them in the 20th century.
Cargo trains are typically powered by a locomotive which pulls from the front.
Some trains have a second locomotive which helps by pushing from the back.
Passenger trains often feature self-propelled carriages (multiple units) that can be joined with other
units. Trains such as these are more energy efficient but may require more maintenance than a single
locomotive vehicle.
Some high speed rail services can reach speeds over 300 kph (186 mph).
You may have heard of Thomas the Tank Engine, a popular character from British television and
literature. Thomas is a small steam locomotive who starred in the childrens television series with a
variety of other railway friends.

CARS
Cars are a common form of transportation used for both small journeys and longer road trips.
The car, automobile, motor car or autocar usually has four-wheels and is a vehicle that uses its own
motor engine system to transport passengers over purposely built roads.
Cars are considered an essential staple of life for many people. Cars help individuals travel about daily
and some people even take cars on extended road trips. There are numerous car companies all over the
world and cars can range in price; used cars can sell for as little as a few hundred dollars and luxury
cars can cost hundreds of thousands! Cars also come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Most cars can fit
five people inside of them. However, Smart Cars are tiny cars that fit only two passengers while
minivans can fit seven or eight passengers. Being able to drive requires attaining a license and people
can start learning how to drive when they are teenagers.

PLANES
Airplanes are an important part of modern travel both domestically and internationally.
International travel once took weekssometimes monthsof travel. Presently, even the most far off
locations can be accessed in less than 30 hours due to the invention of airplanes.
Air travel is considered to be one of the safest and fastest ways to reach distant places.
Air travel requires a lot of pre-planning and it can be quite expensive but it has increasingly lessened
travel times and made international travel possible for many people.
Airplanes are fixed-wing aircraft that are propelled through the air by engines.
They are used for transportation, recreation, research and military purposes.
Engines provide the thrust needed to move a plane forward, overcoming drag and allowing the wings to
create lift.

Boats
Navigating water is a lot easier in a boat!
Large watercraft are generally called ships.
Smaller watercraft are generally called boats.
Some boats are human powered, including kayaks, canoes and gondolas.
Sailboats are propelled by wind and sails.
They are designed to float on water, whether it be in lakes, rivers or seas.
Boats are used every day for an assortment of reasons. Ferries like the Staten Island Ferry help
commuters daily. Other boats are used for work purposes such as fishermen traveling out to sea in order
to catch fish or travel companies using boats to give tours. Cruise ships actually serve as a way for
people to take entire vacations on boats and many of these enormous ships include pools, restaurants,
shops, theaters and more!

Bicycles
Bikes are a cheap and convenient form of transportation used all over the world.
Bicycles are human powered vehicles, typically featuring pedals, a seat, two wheels and a frame.
There are over one billion bicycles found throughout the world.
Bicycles are used for transport, recreation, competitive racing, courier delivery and a range of other
tasks.
Although unicycles (one wheel) and tricycles (three wheels) dont have two wheels, they are
sometimes still referred to as bikes.
Before the word bicycle become popular (coming from the French word bicyclette), bikes were
typically called velocipedes
A motorcycle (also called a motorbike, bike, or cycle) is a two-[1][2] or three-wheeled[3][4] motor
vehicle. Motorcycle design varies greatly to suit a range of different purposes: long distance travel,
commuting, cruising, sport including racing, and off-road riding. Motorcycling is riding a motorcycle
and related social activity such as joining a motorcycle club and attending motorcycle rallies.
In 1894, Hildebrand & Wolfmller became the first series production motorcycle, and the first to be
called a motorcycle. In 2014, the three top motorcycle producers globally by volume were Honda,
Yamaha (both from Japan), and Hero MotoCorp (India).[5]
Motorcycles are usually a luxury good in the developed world, where they are used mostly for
recreation, as a lifestyle accessory or a symbol of personal identity. In developing countries,
motorcycles are overwhelmingly utilitarian due to lower prices and greater fuel economy. Of all the
motorcycles in the world, 58% are in the Asia Pacific and Southern and Eastern Asia regions, excluding
car-centric Japan.
According to the United States Department of Transportation the number of fatalities per vehicle mile
traveled was 37 times higher for motorcycles than for cars.[6]

MOTORBIKES
A motorcycle (or motorbike) is a vehicle used to transport people from one place to another. It does not
have 4 wheels like a car. It has 2 wheels like a bicycle. But it has a motor like a car. A motorcycle is
normally driven by one person. A passenger can also ride on the back of the motorcycle. Some
motorcycles have a sidecar that can carry another passenger.
In 1901, the first successful motorcycle was made by "Indian" motorcycles in Springfield,
Massachusetts. Since then, many other companies have made them. There are different manufacturers
of motorcycle, like Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha. A well known American manufacturer of motorcycles is
Harley-Davidson.
Since motorcycles can be lighter than cars, they can accelerate more quickly. But it also makes them
not as safe as cars, because they do not have a protecting chassis around them like cars. Very often
motorcycle-riders are injured heavily in accidents. A motorcycle rider can wear a helmet and clothing
that has armor. This special clothing may reduce the rider's injuries in an accident. Motorcycles also do
not protect the rider against wind and rain. That makes it difficult to drive in winter or at bad weather.
In poor countries, motorcycles are used by many as a cheap method of transportation. Many people
who do not have the money to buy a car, can afford a small motorcycle. In rich countries, large
powerful motorcycles are used more as a hobby or sport.
On-road bikes (ones that are allowed on public roads) require the rider to have a special type of driver's
license to be ridden legally. Off-road bikes are not allowed to be driven on public roads.
Speed and stunts are the main goals for off-road bike sports. Many on-road bikes are much faster than
off-road bikes and can be used in sports such as motorbike racing.

TRACTORS
A tractor is a strong work vehicle used for farming.[1] It usually has a seat for only the driver, and can
be used to pull many different tools or trailers.
A tractor is an engineering vehicle specifically designed to deliver a high tractive effort (or torque) at
slow speeds, for the purposes of hauling a trailer or machinery used in agriculture or construction. Most
commonly, the term is used to describe a farm vehicle that provides the power and traction to
mechanize agricultural tasks, especially (and originally) tillage, but nowadays a great variety of tasks.
Agricultural implements may be towed behind or mounted on the tractor, and the tractor may also
provide a source of power if the implement is mechanised.
The word tractor was taken from Latin, being the agent noun of trahere "to pull". The first recorded use
of the word meaning "an engine or vehicle for pulling wagons or ploughs" occurred in 1901, displacing
the earlier term "traction engine" (1859).
