Re-building community through

Circles of support
People who experience loneliness and isolation potentially burden our health services
through ill health. Yet research tells us that good quality relationships are the key to
happiness and a healthy life.
In this workshop, you will learn how building a circle of support around an isolated or
vulnerable person or family creates a caring and enabling community in which they
can thrive.
Key learning outcomes will ensure that participants:
have a clear understanding of the impact that loneliness and isolation can have on
health and welfare
find out how this way of working is supported and encouraged by public health,
social care and regulation policy
gain a clearer insight as to the importance of your role and attitude in supporting
and enabling connections, inclusion and friendship
see how a circle of support works in real life and explore some of the
approaches you might use.
The Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act asks us to:
put the person at the centre
support people to achieve well-being
create more preventative approaches
work together.
Creating a circle of support achieves all of these principles and much more. Under
the instruction of the person themselves, members of their community are carefully
selected and invited to come together to work with them on achieving a better life.
Its a fairly simple idea but difficult to achieve, because we seem to have created a
culture of fear and risk-averseness that stops the natural from happening.
Join Mark John Williams to share in practical approaches and stories hes built up
through circles of support and other community connecting approaches over the last
30 years.
