1. (a) What are the assumptions made while doing the steady-state performance of
the converter fed dc drives. Justify your answers.
(b) Explain the use of freewheeling diode in the converter fed dc drives. Take an
example of 1-phase fully controlled converter for explanation. How it is going
to affect the machine performance? [8+8]
2. Derive the speed and torque expressions for a three phase fully controlled converter
connected to a separately excited dc motor. [16]
3. (a) With neat circuit diagram and waveforms, explain dynamic braking of sepa-
rately excited motor by single phase converter.
(b) A dc shunt motor has the armature resistance of 0.04Ω and the field winding
resistance of 10Ω. Motor is coupled to an over hauling load with a torque of
400N-m. Following magnetization curve was measured at 600 rpm:

4. A 230V, 960rpm and 200A separately excited dc motor has an armature resistance
of 0.02Ω. The motor is fed from a chopper, which is capable of providing both
motoring and braking operations. The source has a voltage of 230V. Assuming
continuous conduction: When motor is operated in Dynamic breaking, with Brak-
ing resistance of 2 ohms
(a) calculate Duty ratio of chopper for a motor speed of 600 rpm and breaking
torque of twice the rated value
(b) What will be the motor speed for a duty ratio of 0.6 and motor torque equal
to twice its rated value? [16]
5. The rotor resistance and stand still reactance referred to stator of a 3 phase, 4 pole,
50 Hz Squirrel cage Induction motor is 0.2 ohm and 0.8 ohm per phase respectively.
The full load slip of the motor is 4 percent. Neglect stator resistance and leakage
reactance. Determine how much stator voltage should be reduced in order to get a
speed of 1200rpm if the load torque remains constant. [16]
6. Explain
(a) Why the variable frequency control is of Induction motor is more efficient than
stator voltage control.

1. Give two methods of speed control normally employed for D.C Motors. Hence,
Sketch the Characteristics of a separately excited D.C motor based on these two
methods. Indicate clearly constant torque drive and constant power drive regions.
[16]

2. A 220V, 1500 rpm 50A separately excited motor with armature resistance of 0.5
ohms is fed from three phase fully controlled rectifier with a line voltage of 440V,
50Hz. A Star-Delta connected transformer is used to feed the armature so that
motor terminal voltage equals rated voltage when converter firing angle is zero.

(a) Calculate transformer turns ratio.


(b) Determine the value of firing angle when motor is running at 1200 rpm and
rated torque.
(c) Determine the value of firing angle when motor is running at -800 rpm and
twice the rated torque. [16]

5. (a) Starting from fundamentals prove that torque developed by the Induction
motor is proportional to square of the supply voltage.
(b) Draw the speed torque curves for different voltages fed from stator voltage
controller. [8+8]

6. A 3 Phase,1500 rpm Induction motor is developing torque of 3000 Syn. watts at


an input frequency of 50Hz. If the motor torque is now reduced to 1500 Syn.watts,
determine the new value of stator frequency. The motor is operating in constant
HP region. Assume constant rotor frequency and neglect effect of rotor resistance.

1. A dc series motor has Ra = 3Ω , Rf = 3 Ω and Maf = 0.15 H. The motor speed


is varied by a phase-controlled bridge. The firing angle is π4 and the average speed
of the motor is 1450 rpm. The applied ac voltage to the bridge is 330 Sin wt.
Assuming continuous motor current find the steady state average motor current
and torque. Sketch the waveforms for output voltage, current and gating signals.
[16]

2. Draw the power circuit diagram and explain the operation of three phase full con-
verter drives and also explain the output voltage and current waveforms at firing
angle of 600 , 900 , 1200 . [16]

3. Explain various speed control method of D.C motors and also draw speed-torque
curves for each method. [16]

4. (a) Deduce the mathematical expression for minimum and maximum currents for
a class A chopper operated dc motor with back emf.
(b) A 220V, 24A, 1000rpm separately excited dc motor having an armature resis-

tance of 2Ω is controlled by a chopper. The chopping frequency is 500Hz and
the input voltage is 230V. Calculate the duty ratio for a motor torque of 1.2
times rated torque at 500rpm. [8+8]

5. The rotor resistance and stand still reactance referred to stator of a 3 phase, 4 pole,

equivalent circuit parameters:
R1 = 0.1 Ohm, R2 ’ = 0.12 Ohm,
X1 = 0.3 Ohm, X2 ’ = 0.3Ohm . Xm = 15 Ohm. For a slip of 0.03 at rated frequency
determine the torque developed. [16]

7. A 3 Phase,400V,50 Hz,10 KW 960 rpm, 6 pole star connected slip ring Induction
motor has the following constants referred to the stator.
Rs = 0.4 Ohm, R’r = 0. 6 Ohm, Xs = Xr ’ = 1.4 Ohm. The motor drives a fan
load at 960 rpm. The Stator to rotor turns ratio is 2.
What resistance must be connected in each phase of the rotor circuit to reduce the
speed to 800 rpm? [16]

1. Draw and explain the power circuit diagram of semi-converter feeding a D.C series
motor. Explain with typical voltage and current waveforms, the operation in both
continuous armature current Mode. [16]

2. A 100kw 500V 2000 rpm rpm separately excited dc motor is controlled by a three
phase fully controlled converter and is fed from a 400V 50 Hz supply. The voltage
drop in conducting the thyristor is 2V. Motor parameters are Ra =0.1Ω, La =8mH,
Km =1.6.Rated armature current = 210A.Noload current is 10% of rated current.

(a) Find no load speed at firing angle of 300


(b) Find the firing angle to obtain 2000rpm at rated armature current. Also find
supply power factor.
(c) Find the speed regulation for the firing angle obtained in part b. [16]

3. Draw and explain the operation of Dual- Converter in circulating and .Non-circulating
current control methods. [16]

4. (a) Derive the expressions for average motor current, current Imax and Imin and
average torque for chopper-fed dc separately excited motor.
(b) A dc chopper controls the speed of a separately excited motor. The armature
resistance is Ra =0.05Ω. The back emf constant is Kv =1.527v/A-rad/s. The
rated field current is If = 2.5A. The dc input voltage to the chopper is Vs =
600V. If it is required to maintain a constant developed torque of Td = 547N-
m, plot the motor speed against the duty cycle k of the chopper. [8+8]

5. Discuss in detail with suitable diagrams how the speed of a 3 phase cage type
Induction motor can be varied using A.C. voltage controllers. Also draw the various
types of AC voltage controllers which are used for speed control of Induction motor.

6. The parameters of a three phase 400 Volts, 50 Hz 6 pole, 960 rpm star connected
Induction motor has the following parameters per phase referred to the stator. R1
= 0.4 Ohm. R2 = 0.20 Ohm, X1 = X2 =1.5 Ohm, Xm = 30 Ohms. If the motor is
controlled by variable frequency control at a constant flux of rated value, determine
the motor speed and the stator current at half the rated torque and 25Hz. [16]

7. (a) State the major features of Rotor resistance control of Wound Rotor Induction
motor.
