14 P2IM3 Guitar Technical Workbook Introduction

!
The Guitar Technical Workbooks are a formalised and specified version of the
Contemporary Department Instrument Major technical requirements. They are
intended to give students a reference point for unit-specific technical material that is
clearly and systematically laid out. The majority of technical requirements are
represented in the Workbook but they are not intended to be all encompassing, more
an agreed starting point. There is much that an individual teacher will add to or
develop from this basic information.
Students are required to bring the Workbook to each lesson and systematically work
through the content, with the guidance of their teacher, as part of each weekly lesson.
It is vital for students to be working with their teacher in order to understand and
apply the technical material effectively.
Each example is presented in one key, and located in an easy-to-access location on the
fretboard. Examples will need to be transposed into all keys by the student. To
explore multiple keys, it is suggested that students use a variety of approaches: e.g.
chromatic movement, cycle of fourths/fifths, minor third movement, etc.
Where fingerings and position changes are provided, they are intended as a starting
point only. There are often multiple fingering and position change options for each
example. Students are encouraged to explore, with the help of their teachers, as many
options as possible. These will be individualised by the teacher to suit differing
experience levels and playing situations.
There is a different metronome marking provided as a benchmark for each
Instrumental Major level. It is expected that students will work, with a metronome,
towards achieving the required tempo for each level. At the end of each level, there is
an example technical examination to aid examination preparation.
