ELECTRIC VEHICLE

Propulsion Batteries
The propulsion batteries provide energy to propel the car. Batteries of this
type are designed for deep discharges and rapid recharge.
Lead acid are the most common batteries used; others include nickel-metal
hydride, nickel-cadmium and litium-ion.

Electric Motor
The electric motor provides the power to propel the EV. It may be
powered by either AC or DC power. Electric motors have only one
moving part, and are therefore low maintenance so they can run for
thousands of miles.

Motor Controller
The motor controller is the brain of the EV, controlling the amount of current
from the batteries to the motor depending on the throttle response from the
driver.

12-Volt Accessory Battery

The 12-volt accessory battery provides power to all low voltage
accessories such as the lights and the radio just as the 12-volt battery in
a gas powered car does. The battery is charged by the DC/DC converter.

Low Rolling Resistance Tires

To increase range Evs use low-rolling resistance tires, or green tires, which are able to be
inflated at higher ressures for less rolling-resistance.

Regerative Braking
Regenerative braking is the means in which Energy from braking the car is
used to recharge the batteries. When the car is braking the motor acts as a
generator.
Regen, as it is often referred to, can add up to 5-percent more range per
trip.

Charge Port
For easy access many charge ports are located at the front of the car.
Many EV conversions use the old gas Cap as a port for the charger.
Evs may use either a conductive port which uses a standard 110 or
240 volt outlet or an inductive port which uses an electrical field.
Inductive ports are considered safer in damp or wet conditions.

DC/DC Converter
Since Evs do not use an alternator to charge the 12-volt
accessory battery, a dc/dc converter is used instead. The
converter taps 12 volts from the propulsin batteries to keep the
12-volt battery charged.

Battery Charger
The battery charger restores capacity to the batteries once they have
been discharged. For convenience charging, most chargers are
installed on-board. To prevent the batteries from being overcharged
the charger tapers the current down as the batteries reach full
capacity.
