Introduction

Promat the Brand

For more than 4 decades now, Promat has been synonymous
with high quality solutions based on a wide range of high
performance insulation materials and systems for a variety of
market segments.
Calcium silicate products represent a key core business for the
Promat Group in thermal insulation, and Promat brands such
as PROMATECT, PROMASIL, MONOLUX, DURATEC and
MONALITE are recognised benchmarks for calcium silicate
products worldwide.

Production, R&D and Health & Safety

Promat is the market leader in calcium silicate technology,
our full range of calcium silicate products are manufactured
at five manufacturing sites in the UK, Belgium, Italy and China.
Each manufacturing plant focuses on a specific technology in line
with our global strategy based on cost leadership by optimisation
of technologies and best fit of production technology. Different
manufacturing technologies create calcium silicate products with
different properties, characteristics and advantages which enables
Promat to manufacture tailormade products based on customer
specifications.

The most advanced calcium silicate technology is registered by

Promat under the trademark PROMAXON.
This unique technology has been developed by our highly
qualified, multi skilled team at Promat Research and Technology
Centre (PRTC), based in Tisselt, Belgium.
The process, developed in our research laboratories at PRTC
(Mineral and Matrix Engineering), enables the production of products
with superior properties. This is achieved by controlling
the crystal growth of temperature-stable phases, together with
the porosity, and forming preferred crystal shapes and aggregate
structures. Particles are formed with a size of around 60 m
consisting of spherical shells with very large numbers of fine
needle-shaped crystals and a core interior with fewer but larger
needle crystals.

Promat is the worldwide

leading manufacturer of
calcium silicate insulation
products

Throughout the Promat Group, only the highest quality is

acceptable. All manufacturing facilities are certified to
ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001, ensuring world class
products that are manufactured at consistent high quality.
We believe passionately in preserving our environment for future
generations. In keeping with our on-going focus on health and
safety issues, the Promat Group complies with REACH, an important
European Community Regulation on chemicals and their safe use
(EC 1907/2006).

Calcium silicates are not classified as dangerous

substances by REACH. The processing dust is
biosoluble. Only general inhalable dust limits have to
be observed. If the dust limit is exceeded by processing
or machining the material, localised extraction is
recommended. Please follow the instructions outlined
in our Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).

PROMASIL 1100 SUPER is a product that has a thermal
conductivity of only 0.10 W/m K at a mean temperature
of 800 C.

Thermal conductivity
Our engineered calcium silicate mineral matrix structure
provides very stable thermal conductivity values throughout
a wide range of temperatures and contributes to the desired
energy savings of your process.

The availability of large size boards also effectively contributes to

a reduction in heat loss by limiting the effects of thermal bridging
in your insulation system. The published data are based on
conventional Guarded Hot Plate measurements and the Hot Wire
method in air. If the material is used in the presence of other gases
eg. nitrogen, helium, argon, hydrogen and krypton, please contact
our technical department for relevant thermal conductivity data.

The very low thermal conductivity of our latest products is

influenced by our own unique PROMAXON technology which
is an exclusively engineered mineral matrix structure that brings
controlled smaller pore size in the calcium silicate composition.

When it is combined with the introduction of selected opacifiers,

in the mineral composition, it further lowers the thermal

Value to the customer

The lower the thermal conductivity of an insulation, the thinner and lighter the insulation can be without compromising
performance. The result is a more compact installation with the best possible thermal efficiency you save space and you save
money!

Density
Calcium silicates can be classified by density into three
categories:
Low density calcium silicates mainly used as thermal insulation
(200 to 500 kg/m3)
Medium density calcium silicates mainly used as structural
insulation (500 to 1000 kg/m3)
High density calcium silicates used as structural shaped parts
in many industrial markets (1000 to 1800 kg/m3)
For calcium silicates, a general rule is that the lower the density,
the lower the thermal conductivity and mechanical strength.
Low density materials form the basis of low thermal mass linings
which reduce energy consumption, weight and the need for
expensive steel support structures.

Over 1100 C calcium silicates begin to sinter, therefore the

calcium silicates are limited to 1100 C. Promat calcium silicate
products have a range of classification temperatures according to
their density, chemical composition, and structure, making them
suitable for a wide range of applications. The best performing
products are capable of withstanding continuous exposure to
1000 C.
PROMASIL 1100 SUPER represents the very latest in
calcium silicate technology offering superior performance with
high structural integrity and high thermal stability over a wide
temperature range up to 1050 C.

Value to the customer

Minimal thermal shrinkage equates to maximum
working life without loss of performance.

Classification temperature & shrinkage

Depending on the hydrothermal synthesis conditions, different
calcium silicate phases can be synthesised.
These products can differ on crystalline structure and chemically
bonded water ((OH)2 groups and or H2O molecules).
Tobermorite Ca5Si6O16(OH)2.4H2O
Xonotlite Ca6Si6O17(OH)2
Wollastonite CaSiO3
The dehydration of these minerals during temperature increase
leads to changes in the mineral structure and consequently to
thermal shrinkage of the product.

Mechanical strength
The density range of our calcium silicate products extends up to
1800 kg/m3. This ensures good mechanical properties and high
mechanical strength.
The mechanical strength of calcium silicates depends on the
material compositive and the density over a wide range for both
compressive strength and bending strength.
The excellent structural integrity of the calcium silicate gives
good machinability characteristics and enables the machining
of complex structures.

Material properties & characteristics

As with all insulation materials, a small amount of irreversible

shrinkage will occur during exposure to heat. It is a result of
dehydration which occurs with structural changes. With Promat
calcium silicate products this shrinkage is extremely slight and
rarely has any influence on the effective performance.

Material properties & characteristics

Thermal shock resistance

Electrical insulation

Our exclusive formulations provide excellent thermal

shock resistance and stability compared to other forms
of insulation, including other structural insulators.

All forms of Promat structural insulations possess electrical

insulating properties when dry. They are frequently used for low
voltage applications that are accompanied by heat.

Although most of our products do not need to be heat

treated and will provide excellent performance with
good stability and resistance to thermal shocks,
we do advise heat curing, before the first use as a front
layer, as this will be beneficial and will ensure an even
longer working life for your insulation.

Because the majority of our structural insulating products are

hygroscopic, their electrical resistance may possibly be reduced
slightly through moisture absorption. To prevent this, special
coatings may be applied to our boards and silicon treatment
finishing for machined parts is available on request.

Non-combustibility
Structural integrity and thermal efficiency
Because Promat structural insulation combines high
compressive and flexural strength with high insulation
performance, complex insulating structures for almost
any type of thermal equipment can be built and
insulated in a single operation.

Chemical properties
Our structural insulation products are non-corroding,
insoluble in water and resistant to weak alkalis,
oils and many other chemicals. Some grades are
particularly suited for application where excessive
moisture conditions may be foreseen and where metals
easily suffer from severe corrosion.

10

The majority of our calcium silicates are certified as noncombustible according to EN, BS and DIN standards.
Due to their superior fire rate behaviour calcium silicates are
widely used in passive fire protection systems.

1. High performance calcium silicates

Low density calcium silicate boards are very efficient
insulating products. They have a low thermal conductivity
which leads to low heat losses.
The very light insulation systems also reduce the heat
storage of the lining. These materials are stable up to
1050 C and classified as A1, non-combustible according
to EN 13501-1 and building material class DIN 4102.
Low density calcium silicates are the classic back-up
insulation in combination with dense refractories, insulating
bricks and castables for a broad range of applications. They
are very cost effective due to their price/performance in
comparison with other insulating products.

PROMASIL calcium silicates

Installation is much faster when compared to conventional

insulating bricks. Low density calcium silicates should not
be used as the front exposure layer in high temperature
applications as their low thermal conductivity and large size
can lead to thermal stresses.
The material is hygroscopic. When installed with castables
a protective layer such as waxed paper, a plastic foil, or an
impregnation coating is advised. The Promat Impregnation
2000 can be applied in our factory or by the customer on
site.

High strength electrical insulation

These insulating technical ceramics are engineered high density
boards that have originally been developed to be a high temperature
replacement for asbestos boards. Due to their very high mechanical
strength and electrical resistance combined with minimal shrinkage,
they are generally preferred for applications up to 1000 C where
good electrical resistance is required. Examples include arc chutes,
support members for heating elements, hot press insulation, and dustfree linings in heat treatment furnaces for electronics.
The material is hygroscopic which can influence the electrical
resistance. Heat treatment to eliminate the moisture is necessary.
The outstanding performance characteristics of DURATEC- XP make
it the best choice in terms of efficiency and durability when compared
to any other similar product for replacement of asbestos boards in
induction furnaces.

A classic application for these products is industrial dryers

operating in the temperature range of 80 C up to 400 C.
The main advantage of large-sized prefabricated elements is
the fast installation onto a lightweight steel construction
for furnace and plant sections.
DURASTEEL is a composite insulating board made of a
calcium silicate core reinforced on both sides by galvanised
and perforated steel sheet coverings.
The composite is mechanicaly resilient and can be used as
a supporting construction element, as a heat shield against
sparks and metal splashes, and as insulating partition walls.

Impregnations for Promat calcium silicates are available if required.

Promat Impregnation 2000 can be used as a special agent
to achieve a water repellent (hydrophobic) surface. The water
repellancy is effective after full hardening of approx. 48 h at 20 C.
At higher temperature the hardening cycle may be slightly shorter.
Promat-SR Impregnation provides reliable protection against
aggressive media. At the same time it strengthens the substrate and
protects against abrasion if necessary. The water vapour diffusion of
the impregnated surface is not impaired.

Mechanical fixing
Mechanical fixing with screws, tacker, or pins is feasible.
The fixings used must be appropriate for the exposure
temperature. If possible we recommend to clamp the
boards with canted metal strips as shown.
This method has the advantage of maintaining the free
movement of the boards during heating - the thermal
expansion is not obstructed.
