Density
Calcium silicates can be classified by density into three
categories:
Low density calcium silicates mainly used as thermal insulation
(200 to 500 kg/m3)
Medium density calcium silicates mainly used as structural
insulation (500 to 1000 kg/m3)
High density calcium silicates used as structural shaped parts
in many industrial markets (1000 to 1800 kg/m3)
For calcium silicates, a general rule is that the lower the density,
the lower the thermal conductivity and mechanical strength.
Low density materials form the basis of low thermal mass linings
which reduce energy consumption, weight and the need for
expensive steel support structures.
Mechanical strength
The density range of our calcium silicate products extends up to
1800 kg/m3. This ensures good mechanical properties and high
mechanical strength.
The mechanical strength of calcium silicates depends on the
material compositive and the density over a wide range for both
compressive strength and bending strength.
The excellent structural integrity of the calcium silicate gives
good machinability characteristics and enables the machining
of complex structures.
Electrical insulation
Non-combustibility
Structural integrity and thermal efficiency
Because Promat structural insulation combines high
compressive and flexural strength with high insulation
performance, complex insulating structures for almost
any type of thermal equipment can be built and
insulated in a single operation.
Chemical properties
Our structural insulation products are non-corroding,
insoluble in water and resistant to weak alkalis,
oils and many other chemicals. Some grades are
particularly suited for application where excessive
moisture conditions may be foreseen and where metals
easily suffer from severe corrosion.
10
The majority of our calcium silicates are certified as noncombustible according to EN, BS and DIN standards.
Due to their superior fire rate behaviour calcium silicates are
widely used in passive fire protection systems.

Thermal conductivity of MICROTHERM insulation
compared to conventional insulating materials
The graph shows that in low temperature applications up to
400 C the thermal conductivity is dominated by solid
conduction. Therefore, the lower the density the better the
thermal insulation properties of PROMASIL.

Typical applications
Dryers
Apparatus construction
Wet and damp rooms
Industrial furnaces
Heat and moisture protection in industrial plants
Replacement for asbestos containing boards
Surface treatment
The physical properties and the surface structure of
PROMATECT-H and PROMINA boards make them ideally
suited to the application of decorative finishes.
The boards are alkaline, therefore they must be treated using
alkali-resistant paints, bonding agents and decorative systems.
To avoid water absorbtion and to protect against aggressive
atmospheres, Promat -Impregnations are available.

PROMAFOUR
Typical applications
Chimney casings
Mantelpieces of fireplaces and stoves
Surface treatment
PROMAFOUR boards are hygroscopic and vapour permeable.
Moisture content is therefore automatically regulated by the
application environment. Water vapour absorption can slightly
affect the strength and thermal performance characteristics of
these materials.

Mechanical fixing
Mechanical fixing with screws, tacker, or pins is feasible.
The fixings used must be appropriate for the exposure
temperature. If possible we recommend to clamp the
boards with canted metal strips as shown.
This method has the advantage of maintaining the free
movement of the boards during heating - the thermal
expansion is not obstructed.
