Visual Arts Comprehensive introduces art to the beginning art student. Emphasizes the ability to understand & use
the ELEMENTS OF ART & PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN through a variety of media processes both 2-D and 3-D.
This course is a discipline-based art education course designed through the four domains of Art:
Art Production (creating our own art) - learning to express yourself in a variety of ways
Art Criticism looking and talking about art, and understanding what we see
Aesthetics - understanding the nature, meaning, and value of art
Art History - getting to know artists, past and present
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Within this course, each student will develop his/her creative thought process. An effective artistic background
actually enhances the student's ability to think and problem-solve. In art we are not looking for one correct answer,
we are learning to look for many possibilities. Students will:
learn the basic concepts and vocabulary of artistic skills and knowledge, connections between art and life, critical analysis
and aesthetics, and historical and cultural context
learn important artists and art works of traditional and modern art periods
learn to recognize art forms, styles, subjects, themes and media
GRADING SYSTEM (individual scoring rubrics will be used for each area, project, and assignment):
35% - Art Production/Projects: Projects are not optional they are graded on following instructions, effort and initiative,
originality, and craftsmanship. You are NOT graded according to your artistic skill.
20% - Meaning and Creative Thinking: sketches/planning documents
15% - Assessment and Reflection: art critique and aesthetic assignments, writing assignments, quizzes, and final exam
10% - Contextual Understanding: Historical and Cultural Context
10% - Connections: connection to other subject areas, real-world (plus a weekly work ethic grade will be given here)
10% - Student Learning Objectives (SLO) test, and a cumulative final exam
MAKE-UP WORK:
Students who have been absent are responsible for finding out and making up missed work. After the 6 weeks
report, work may NOT be made up. Students are encouraged to complete an essay to take place of an art project.
DISCIPLINE PLAN:
Positive Classroom Management- each student receives 4 points each day in class, 2 for participation and 2 for
listening to instruction and directions. Rules will be discussed and reviewed for understanding the first two weeks of
school. Any violation, after the first warning, will result in deduction of a point, and calculated in the weekly grade
for work ethic. Incidents will be documented and accumulate to more serious consequences.
Cheating, copying, or appropriating another students work, theft, or vandalism of others property will not be tolerated.
Appropriate consequences will result, including a 0 for the assignment. This includes copyrighted trademarks and
characters from the Internet.
You make choices every day you walk in the art room, prepared or unprepared, for the grade YOU earn. Its up to
YOU, you get what you earn! I look forward to a great semester! I hope we will both learn a lot and have fun becoming art
