Roman artists tried to reproduce the world around them as
realistically as they could. Roman art is a reflection of mixture of borrowed cultures fused together with local traditions to form their own styles and traditions. ROMAN PAINTINGS - Most of the paintings in this era were copied or imitated from Hellenic Greek paintings. - Fresco technique was used in brightly colored backgrounds; division of the wall into a multiple rectangular areas. - Roman paintings have a wide variety of subjects, animals, everyday life, still life, mythological subjects, portraits and landscapes. - The development of landscape painting is the main innovation of Roman painting from Greek painting. ROMAN SCULPTURES - Most Roman sculptures are made of monumental terra-cotta. Sarcophagus - is a box-like funeral receptacle for a corpse, most commonly carved in stone, and displayed above ground, though it may also be buried. The Portonacio Sarcophagus -The best known and most elaborate of all sarcophagus. -Used for the burial of Roman General -It depicts battle scenes between Romans and Germans Sarcophagus, from Cervetiri -Made of Terra Cotta - length 67 (2.06 m) - a husband and wife are shown reclining comfortably, as if they were on a couch. ROMAN ARCHITECTURE - Roman architecture was designed to reflect the power of the city and to create in all people an awe of its imperial power. - They built sturdy stone structures both for use and to perpetuate their Glory.
