My objectives for my internship were primarily three main goals. The first goal was to gain an understanding of the structure of the organization that my internship was comprised of. I believe that I have in fact been able to achieve this goal in understanding the organizational structure of my internship with Voice of America. I was able to achieve this goal by consistently asking questions on the first day of my internship and throughout to the simplest task of touring the building to familiarize myself with the different locations of different departments. Additionally, I would observe inter-departmental relations in order to understand the hierarchy of Voice of America. I would always be an active observer in each work environment I was in so that I could understand the roles and responsibilities for each working professional. Lastly, I was able to gain an insight on how each department of Voice of America effectively worked together. My second goal for my internship was to acquire skills, knowledge, and the proper experiences necessary in order to gain a position in the communications media field in the future. In order to complete this goal I met with my supervisor on multiple occasions to gauge my progress in my internship and to voice myself on what I wanted to gain out of my internship with Voice of America. I always sought out constructive criticism on assignments and tasks I was given
in order to ensure that I was working to the best of my abilities. I made
sure to ask questions for the purpose of gaining knowledge or clarifying a new skill I had just learned in order to make sure that I had fully understood and could use the skill in the future. For my third goal, I had hoped to work for a professional organization of communications media. In this case, it was working with and for Voice of America, the major media outlet from the United States government. What led to me achieving this third goal was the fact that I was actually able to produce media for this known organization. This was done through the form of creating and editing a digital short that went viral through our social media platforms, which received over 40,000 views and counting. Last but not least I was able to contribute overall to Voice of America through the means of various communications media skills I have learned during my time at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. I was able to harness my skills with broadcasting, broadcast journalism, media production, promotions, photography, social media, and video editing. My education as IUP would be a key factor with my immense success during my internship with Voice of America. The instructive lectures in classes that I received through theoretical courses and production courses were the bulk of my foundation for being able to complete exceptional work. I was able to gain most of the skills I needed in order my internship to go smoothly and to impress my
supervisors from day one with the amount of knowledge and
experience I had already had thanks to my classes at IUP. The classes that were the most useful to me would be television production and video intensive classes like media field studies because the skills I learned in those classes transferred directly to the type of work that I did with my time at Voice of America. Those skills were specifically learning each facet that goes into a total production, whether it is television production to producing a video project. Finally, the Adobe Creative Suite training has been useful.
