Section 2-Case Study of the Organization

Rachel Doig

Working for a small, privately-owned business has been an experience that I

will never forget. Because I didnt work for a large corporation, I received lots of
hands-on projects and assistance that forwarded my learning and skills at Double R
Productions. I was able to branch out my skills and work on real life projects with big
clients such as the National Credit Union Administration, the American Foundation
for Suicide Prevention, the National Association of Broadcasters, and many more.
Double R creates PSAs, PR and marketing videos, training videos for larger
corporations, animation, campaign videos, web series, events/conference videos,
and original programming. As far as departments go, we dont really have separate
ones. There are certain people that would be in the editing department or certain
public relations people, but we all work together on various projects. Including the
interns, there are only 10 people that work in our office. Our office hires freelance
photographers and videographers for certain shoots with clients, but they dont
work in the office full-time.
If I had to place myself into a department, I would technically work in the
intern department. As interns, we have specified projects such as weekly blogs,
occasional vlogs, and production assistant responsibilities on video shoots. We are
also responsible in aiding with the marketing of Double R and keeping up with social
media. Sometimes we search for stock images or video for projects, type call
sheets, or even act in videos for clients. As I mentioned before, we are a
collaborative office that is consistently working together to get projects done.
Looking at the structure of the organization, Rosemary Reed would be at the
top of the chain. This is her business (hence, the Double R) and she likes it that way.
Shes very much in charge, but she really knows what she is doing. Rosemary has
taught me so much about communications, dealing with other people, Washington
DC, and life in general. After Rosemary would be Catherine & Michael. Michael is
one of our editors, but he has been with Double R for the longest time, besides
Rosemary of course. Catherine is our Director of Development, and the second in
charge of the office. Next would be Paul, another one of our editors. He is a previous
intern with Double R, but got hired on a few years after his internship. After Paul
would be Flannery, who is the production and communications coordinator. She
handles a little bit of everything, from marketing and social media to running
shoots. After Flannery is Lauren, who is the field and production coordinator. Lauren
is in charge of making most call sheets for shoots, contacting clients, and going on
shoots. Then we have Jose, who is our technical assistant. He edits videos as well,
but also helps on shoots and other project tasks. Then there is the intern team. We
work closely with each of these people, and they are always available to assist us
with any problems or questions we might have. Everything that Ive learned at
Double R has been because of a collaborative effort from everyone in the office.

As for interviewing my supervisor, Ive been learning so much about her and
how she came to her position since the first day that I stepped into the office at
Double R. Rosemary has a background in theatre and speech along with teaching
experience. She started out in DC working for the FOX network as the executive
producer of Americas longest-running live daily talk show with Maury Povich called
Panorama. She also produced the first weekend news hour for WTTG-TV (FOX) in DC.
Rosemary founded Double R in 1987, and has been hosting interns from The
Washington Center since then. She created and is the executive producer for
Gospelrobics, a Double R original program. Rosemary has also produced the
National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) PSAs for about 30 years. She has
worked in various countries as a writer, producer, and director. Double R has had
numerous clients throughout the years, such as arts organizations, national
corporations, the US government, Fortune 500 companies, and major national
newspapers.
Rosemary and Double R have been recognized by and won numerous awards
from: Telly, Filmmaker of the Month from the DC Film Office, CINE, the National
Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, United Press International, the National
Education Association, Associated Press and American Women in Radio & Television.
Rosemary is also actively involved with the DC chapter of Women in Film & Video as
well as TIVA.
At the office, we are consistently talking about news and news-related
organizations. Rosemary encourages me to stay on top of all news and anything
related to that, especially with the upcoming election. I respect Rosemary greatly
because she is brutally honest and tells it like it is, but she only wants me to
succeed. She always encourages me to read and watch anything that will increase
my knowledge of communications and media as a whole. She encourages us to take
advantage of all opportunities that are in our paths, and that we are never too busy.
After seeing the work that Rosemary does, Ill never be able to complain that Im
busy again! The advice that she has given to both myself and the other interns
cannot be described in a short paragraph alone. Ive learned an incredible amount
about the media and communications field in such a short amount of time, and
thats all because of Rosemary.
