ORP(OxidationReductionPotential)representsan
intensityfactor,andideallyobeystheNernst
Equation:

ThefollowingisrequiredforastableORPreading:
1. Significantconcentrationsofbothspecies
ofthecouple
2. Bothspeciesmustbecapableofreadily
transferringelectronstoorfromeachother
(reversibleredoxcouple),andreadily
acceptingorremovingelectronsfroman
inertmetalsurface.
GenerallymostpracticalORPmeasurementsare
madeonsamplesthatdonotmeetthesecriteria.
Thisresultsinpoorreproducibility,drift,stirring
ratedependenceandnonNernstianbehaviour.
Nevertheless,ORPisusefulformeasuringchanges
inasystemratherthanabsolutevalues.
TheORPelectrodeconsistsofaninertPlatinum(or
Gold)wire,connectedtoastem.Thepotential
developediscomparedtoastablereference
potentialconsistingofasilver/silverchloridegelled
chloridehalfcell.
Completionofthecircuitisaccomplishedby
solutioncontactbetweenthereferencehalfcell
electrolyteandthesampleviaaporouswick.
Platinumisnormallyusedformostapplications;
howeverGoldhasbeenusedinapplicationssuchas
ORPcontrolinelectrolyticallychlorinated
swimmingpools,ORPincyanidesolutionsandin
reducingenvironments.
Preparation
Theelectrodesareshippedprefilledwith
electrolyteandarereadyforuseafterremovalof
thewettingcap.Removethewettingcapbygently
easingitofftheelectrode.
Retainthewettingcapasitcanbeusedforlong
termstorageoftheelectrode.
ORPElectrodeCalibration
UnlikepHelectrodes,ORPelectrodesdonot
requireasymmetrypotentialandslopecorrection.
Anoffsetcandevelopifthesensortiporthe
referencejunctionbecomescontaminated.To
assureproperoperation,checkORPelectrodeswith
anORPstandardasdescribedbelow:
1. Consultthemeterinstructionmanualfor
metersetup.Connecttheelectrodeand
rinsetheelectrodewithdistilledwater.
2. Placetheelectrodeina(preferably)stirred
ORPstandard.Allowtimetostabiliseand
observethereading.
3. Ifthereadingisnotwithin20mVofthe
correctvalue,cleantheelectrodeand
repeattheprocedure.

WerecommendtheuseofeitherZobells
(229mV@25C)orLightssolution(476mV@
25C)forcheckingORPelectrodes.
HelpfulHints
1. ORPsamplesaregenerallyunstableand
shouldnotbestoredorpreserved.
Measureonsitewhereverpossible.
2. Cleanthesensingtipregularly.Unclean
sensortipsareaverycommonsourceof
errorinORPmeasurements.
3. Allowadequatetimeforstabilisation.
Maintenance
Whennotinuse,keeptheelectrodeimmersedin
20%KClsolution(thewettingcapcanbeusedfor
this).
Cleaning
Cleanlinessofthesensorandjunctioniscriticalfor
accuratemeasurement.Driftandslowresponseis
oftenduetouncleansensortipsandreference
junction.DONOTuseabrasivematerials.
Toremoveinorganicdepositsandscale
SoaksensortipindiluteHClforanhour.Washwell
withwaterandconditionin20%KClsolutionbefore
use.
Toremovesolidsandorganics
Wipethesensortipwithcottonortissuesoakedin
mildnonalkalinedetergent.Washwithwaterand
conditionin20%KClbeforeuse.
ToremoveplatedmetalsfromORPTips
Soakthetipinapprox0.1Mnitricacidfor1520
minutes,followedbyconditioningin20%KCl.
