Is Matthew Pariss story of an English diplomatic

delegation, sent by King John to the caliph of Morocco in the summer of 1212, nothing more than
fiction, or does it report actual historical events? The
volume proposes an entirely new interpretation of
the text and portrays a multifaceted and inherently
complex picture of the interactions between Christians, Muslims, and Jews around 1200 that draws on
law, politics, statecraft, history, culture, and religion.

The articles in this collection explore female

patronage in literary, artistic and bibliophilic spheres from the Middle Ages to the early
Renaissance with the aim of better defining
womens roles in the textual and visual (re)production and transmission of secular and religious
works. Bringing to light the phenomenon of cultural feminization, its conditions and constraints,
the multidisciplinary approaches presented here
elucidate in innovative and original fashion the
real character of female patronage in Europe
between the 13th and 16th centuries. Articles in

Examines the debates

onRepublican and
Signorial Renaissance
political systems in
Renaissance Italy.
The period between the
late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries
saw significant discussion
in Italy about the two
different political models of republicanism and
seignorialism, reaching a climax at the end of
the Trecento when the most influential scholars of Florence and Venice began to attack the
despotism imposed on Milan by the Visconti. In
this book, the two systems of government represented in Italy are revisited, the arguments put
forward by their supporters are compared and
contrasted, and the development in the use of
political language, especially in the city-states of
central and northern Italy, are explored.

Childhood Disability and Social

Integration in the Middle Ages
Constructions of Impairments in
Thirteenth- and Fourteenth-Century
Canonization Processes
approx. x + 450 p., 1 b/w ill., 156 x 234 mm, 2016, HB,
ISBN 978-2-503-55185-2, 110
Series: Studies in the History of Daily Life (800-1600), vol. 4
Publication scheduled for Spring 2016

This volume offers new insights into medieval disability studies by analysing miracle testimonies from
canonization processes as sources for the study of
medieval attitudes to and understanding of childhood physical impairments: how they were defined,
and the social consequences of childhood disability
on the family, on the community, and on children
themselves. This study thus aims to tease apart the
often-complex ways in which medieval society both
viewed physical differences and how it chose to (re)
construct these differences in the discourse of the
miraculous, as well as in everyday life.

This volume, which draws together contributions from leading historians, explores how
loyalty was manifested, both in public and in
private, in the medieval world. Covering topics as diverse as religious orders, royal courts,
and funeral customs, the essays collected here
explore the interplay between loyalty and love,
friendship, obedience, and justice, and question
how the value of loyalty functioned both in theory and in practice across a range of social spaces. Together, these articles offer a unique new
perspective on medieval society and provide a
framework that also promises to be fruitful for
future research.

A multi-disciplinary collection of important and

innovative new research that enhances our understanding of the experience, conditions, conceptualisation, and impact of human movement in Western
Europe and the Middle East between Late Antiquity and the thirteenth century. The contributions
gathered here explore the experiences of travellers

between southern Italy and Sicily, and across Germany and England.

Drawing on a variety of sources from England, France, the

Low Countries, Italy, and Iberia,

archaeological methodologies, considering in turn the

with four and a halfmillion letters, the archival collection of the Medici Grand Dukes
housed at the Archivio di Stato in Florence
chronicles the culture and history of Europe
and beyond, for a span of over two hundred
years. The letters of this collection, known as
the Mediceo del Principato, embrace a great
variety of themes including diplomacy, art,
medicine, food, science, and material culture.
The original research that supports these
studies was drawn in part from the Medici
Archive Projects online platform (BIA) for
querying over 350,000 digitized and/or transcribed letters. Making use of these and other
original sources, the essays inThe Grand Ducal
Medici and their Archiveshed new light on the
mechanisms and strategies that enabled Florence to emerge from decades of internecine
conflict and diplomatic chaos in order to enjoy cultural and political prominence.

This book offers a new

and innovative approach
to the study of magic
and witchcraft in Italy
between the late Middle Ages and the early
modern period. Central
to this research are the
writings of a number of
friars active at the friary
of St Angelo in Milan. By
considering the writings
of these men in their
wider literary and pastoral context, and in the light of the broader reforming
aims of the Franciscans, this unique study not only
offers new insights into the late medieval understanding of superstition and witchcraft, but also
makes an important contribution to the history of
pastoral care.

Review
Envisioning the Bishop is a well-crafted collection of
articles centered on images of medieval bishops. The
articles are extremely wide-ranging, both chronologically and geographically, with offerings from all parts
of Europe between the 4th and the 13th centuries.
Despite this broad range the articles complement
one another beautifully, thanks not only to their
careful selection, but also to the editors useful introduction which introduces the reader to the recent
historiography on the topic and suggests ways in
which the present essays tie together.

The book takes as its core

theme a comparison of Italian and Spanish Medieval
Archaeology, in each case
challenging the status quo
and attempting to move the
boundaries of our historical
discussions ever forwards.
The volume attempts to
evaluate if the Medieval Archaeology of these two important Mediterranean
countries, largely unfamiliar on the international stage,
with their different histories, can be compared.

Artefacts and environmental remains are abundant from archaeological

excavations across Europe, but until now they
have most commonly
been used to accompany
broader narratives built
on historical sources and
studies of topography
and buildings, rather than
being studied as important evidence in their own right. The papers in this
volume aim to redress the balance by taking an
environmental and artefact-based approach to
life in medieval Europe.

scholarly editions and studies

registers, national boundaries, time and space, refining, even re-defining, our understanding of translation.

This volume provides new

insights into how different kinds of rules were
designed, established, and
followed in the shaping of
medieval documents, as a
means of enabling complex
and subtle communicational phenomena. Because
they provide a perspective
for approaching the material they are supposed to organize, these rules
(or the postulation of their use) provide powerful
analytical tools for structural studies into given

MANUSCRIPTA
ILLUMINATA
This series takes a multi-faceted approach
to the illuminated manuscripts of the
Middle Ages. It seeks to embrace methodologies that go beyond the traditional
dimensions of style and iconongraphy to
encompass aspects of the cultural context
of manuscript production, agency, text-image relations, patronage and politics among
others. The series encourages a variety of
approaches and topics.

The Florentine painter

Andrea del Castagno (c.
1419-1457) was a central
figure of the Italian Renaissance, and his work
appears in every major
survey textbook on the
period. In a series of close
analyses of key works, this
book argues that Andrea
del Castagnos art of creative disruption lays bare
the problems and paradigms of early Western art. It
is a limit case at the moment when the idea of art
was itself coming into being.

Dan Ewing
Felipe Pereda reconstructs the history of religious art in Spain between two crucial dates
in the politics of the image enforced by the
Reyes Catlicos: 1478 and 1501. By focusing
first on Seville, then on Granada Pereda evokes
the first moments of the institution of the Santo Oficio and its later developments. In both
cities, the local authorities had established the
obligation for citizens to keep religious images
within their houses. In Seville, the authorities in
particular targeted the marranos (Jewish converts); in Granada, the new moriscos (converted Muslims). In both cases, the edicts emanated
from the confessor of Queen Isabella of Castile,
Fray Hernando de Talavera, himself of converso origin. At the intersection of social history
and intellectual history, Images of Discord shows
in which ways religious and social conflicts determined the status and development of sacred
art in late fifteenth- and early sixteenth-century
Castile and Andalusia and, more broadly, the history of Spanish art in the early modern period.

Taking as her point of departure Hieronymus

Boschs famous Epiphany triptych, the author
analyzes how representations of Jews, Saracens
(later Turks), Ethiopians, and Mongols for centuries shaped western Christian attitudes towards salvation history, contemporary political
conflicts, and the declining status of the Roman
Church. Painted at a pivotal moment on the eve
of the Reformation, this painting is a compelling
lens through which to look backwards to the
Middle Ages, and forwards to Martin Luther and
the ideological significance of escalating Christian/non-Christian conflicts in the formation of
the new Protestant church.

Cassianos Antichit Diverse album survives almost intact in the Royal

Library at Windsor Castle.
It is a compendium of penand-wash drawings of Roman antiquities, including
jewellery, amulets, weights
and measures, vases and
lamps, tripods, statuettes
and reliefs. Many of the
drawings record the collection in which the objects
were then to be found, for they were the subject
of much antiquarian study and debate in the early
seventeenth century.

were used or invoked in the construction and display of power. The essays include material culture
studies that explore textile display, archival investigations that reveal patterns of donation, technical
studies concerning design and production processes, as well as art historical studies concerning the
representation of textiles in other media. All together, these essays offer insight into how textiles
were interwoven with notions of identity, status, and
power during the Middle Ages.

the Bargello, the first town hall of Florence. A careful
analysis of documents, fabric, and restoration allows

timeline radically changes our understanding of the
palaces construction, function, and urban context

the evolution of doctrine,
identify the network of professors that developed

the territories conquered during and just after the
Fourth Crusade of 1204, for which almost no local

The main focus of this book

is on European translations
of Jerusalem in images,
objects, places, and spaces
that evoke the city through
some physical similarity or
by denomination and cult
- all visual and material aids
to commemoration and
worship from afar. The book discusses both wellknown and long-neglected examples, the forms of
cult they generate and the virtual pilgrimages they
serve, and calls attention to their written and visual
equivalents and companions. In so doing, it opens
a whole new vista onto the summa of representations of Jerusalem.

While the huge historiographical production on

medieval crusades mainly
stresses the part played by
princes, the aristocracy and
military orders, this book
focusses on a topic which
has received far less attention: the importance of the
popes and their delegates
in the organization before
departure and the conduct of the armies sent to
liberate the Holy Land in the 12th and 13th centuries.
