EFFECT ACID AND ALKALI ON LATEX

AIM(C1PI1): To observe the effect of adding acid

or alkali to the rubber latex.
HYPOTHESIS(C1PI2): If use acid then the latex
becomes solid.
VARIABLE(C1PI3):
manipulated: Presence of acid and alkali
responding: Latex becomes solid or remains liquid
constant: time
Materials and apparatus: C1PI4
100 cm3 beaker (3), sticker labels, a test tube, a
graduated cylinder, rubber latex, glass rod,
ethanoic acid and ammonia.
Diagram:(C2PI4)
Procedure: (C1PI5)
1) Three beakers are labelled as A, B and C
2) 5cm3 of latex is poured into each beaker.
3) 2cm3 of ethanoic acid is added into beaker A
and the mixture is stirred with a glass rod.
4) 2cm3 of ammonia is added into beaker B and
the mixture is stirred with a glass rod.
5)Nothing is added into beaker C and the mixture
is stirred with a glass rod.
6) The beakers are left for 30 minutes.
7) Observations are recorded.

observation:
Beaker
Observations
A
latex becomes solid
B
Latex remains liquid
C
Latex becomes solid
interpretation of data (C4PI1):
1) Which chemical causes the latex to coagulate?
ethanoic acid
2)Which chemical prevents the latex from
coagulating?
ammonia
3)What happened to the latex when it was left for
one day?
latex becomes solid
4) Why did the latex coagulate when it was left for
one day?
Reaction of bacteria in the latex produces acid and
this acid causes the coagulation of latex.
Conclusion:
1) Hypothesis is accepted(C4PI2)
2) If use acid then the latex becomes solid.(C4PI3)
