DESCRIPTION OF THE TASK

Students are assessed on the following learning outcomes:

Topic 8: Magnetism
Students should be able to:

observe that a freely-suspended magnet comes to rest in a North-South

direction.

state that a magnet has two poles.

infer that like poles repel and unlike poles attract.

distinguish between magnetic and non-magnetic materials.

state that iron, steel, nickel and cobalt are magnetic materials.

list some of the uses of magnets in everyday applications.

infer that there is a magnetic field around a magnet.

observe and draw magnetic field patterns using iron filings:

i) around a magnet.
ii) between two like poles arranged end to end.
iii) between two unlike poles arranged end to end.

Topic 9: Drugs
Students should be able to:

state the definition of drugs as any substance which, when taken into the body
affects the way the body and brain works.

describe some uses of drugs.

list some commonly abused drugs i.e heroin, cannabis, methylamphetamine and
alcohol.

list some signs and symptoms shown by a person addicted to:

i) heroin.
ii) cannabis.
iii) methylamphetamine.
iv) alcohol.

explain the harmful effects of sports drugs e.g. steroid and human growth
hormone.

state the consequences of drug abuse in relation to addiction, crime and

transmission of AIDS.
3

2.1

discuss the harmful effects of excessive consumption of alcohol (including the

effects on their families and society).

show an awareness of the present of harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke.

state the harmful effects of tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide.

explain the harmful effects of active and passive smoking.

suggest ways to encourage the public to refrain from smoking.

plot and draw a best fit line graph from related data given.

PREPARATION

Preparing Students for BCAT 5

It is important that teachers explain clearly to the students what they are required
to do and prepare well before the start of each task. Go through the learning
outcomes with students to ensure that they understand what is expected of them.
2.2

Teacher Resources

Resources for teachers include:

2.3

i) Worksheets
Activity Worksheet 1
Activity Worksheet 2

- for each student

ii) Assessment Sheets

Answer Scheme for Activity Worksheet 1
Answer Scheme for Activity Worksheet 2

- for teacher only

Guidelines

Each student will be given Activity Worksheet 1 and Activity Worksheet 2.

3.0

Allow the students five minutes to read through the Activity Worksheet.
Go through each worksheet with the students.
Describe the procedures involved in the activity.
Explain to the students that they are required to answer the questions
individually.
Remind students that all drawings must be in pencil otherwise they will be penalised.

Allocate two periods (at least 40 minutes) to complete each of the

worksheets.

THE TASK
4

BCAT 5 consists of two worksheets only; Activity Worksheet 1 and Activity

Worksheet 2.
This task requires students to work individually and without referring to any books.
It is to assess the students knowledge with understanding, thinking skills as well as
experimental skills and investigations. Allow the students two teaching periods
(at least 40 minutes) to complete each activity worksheet.

FORMATIVE ACTION

Formative action is carried out by the teacher after each task has been implemented in the classroom.
Teachers need to be reminded that:

assessment for learning requires quality feedback for significant improvement in learning.

information gained from each assessment can be used to plan future teaching and learning.

the information needs to be focused and specific so that teaching and learning can be targeted at
the areas that need improvement.

the information should also include specific suggestions that will map out the strategies for future
learning. For this purpose, the diagnostic grid is useful as it focuses on those students and the areas
which need further instruction.

assessment feedback does not mean just providing a mark or a grade. For feedback to make an
impact, teachers should comment on the students strength and how to extend their performance
and also the areas that need further improvement.

assessment feedback is communicated through student friendly language. It must be appropriate

and within the capacity of the learner to respond.
