Abstract This paper covers the topic regarding Code of Ethics

for Engineering. It aims to train the engineering students as to how

ethics is applied to certain situations and how it is conducted.
Engineering is an important and learned profession. As members of
this profession, engineers are expected to exhibit the highest
standards of honesty and integrity

INTRODUCTION
CASE PROBLEM

Jocelyn is an intern at an power electronics startup. On

her first day of work, she was shown around a laboratory
where she would complete most of her projects. During this
time, she was also introduced to nine male interns who would
be sharing the same lab space. Since the lab could only
accommodate five interns at a time, a vote was held to
determine who would work in the lab during the day (e.g. 8am
to 4pm) and who would work at night (e.g. 4pm to 12am)
during certain days of the week. The morning shift was a
popular option for a majority of the interns; Jocelyn was
fortunate to be selected for four (out of five) morning shifts.
Weeks passed. Jocelyn had been enjoying her work and
almost completed one of her projects. However, one day, a
fellow intern asked how she was doing. Jocelyn commented
that she was good but tired. The intern replied that Ramona
had no reason to be tired because [she was] working mostly
day shifts. Jocelyn was offended, but chose to ignore his
comment.
The next day, she ran into several interns, one of who was
the one she encountered the previous day. At some point in
groups conversation, the same intern made a remark about
how Jocelyn always got her way [in the workplace] because
she was a girl. Jocelyn was upset; however, because she did
not want to cause a scene, chose again to ignore his remark.
During the following weeks, Jocelyn tried to avoid the
intern who made the inappropriate comments. However,
certain settings forced her to interact with him and, in those

times, he made a point to make Jocelyn feel guilty and trivial.

Because she did not observe him behave condescendingly
towards the other interns, Jocelyn speculated that her
colleague held a prejudice towards female engineers.
How should Jocelyn respond?

ANSWERS TO PROBLEM

The problem in this case raises conflicts involved in

internship experience of Jocelyn wherein her fellow intern is
not conducting himself with integrity, equity, fairness,
courtesy towards her and he is not giving a fair professional
criticism. In this case, Jocelyn must confront her fellow intern
about his attitude against her in the workplace. She may
respond by doing the following steps:

The figure above shows the steps that Jocelyn can do

to address the conflict. The idea of doing this is not to win but
to come to a mutually satisfying solution to the problem. The
first step is to set time for a discussion with her fellow intern.
This should be as soon as possible but agreeable to both
persons. If her fellow intern refused, Jocelyn must try to help

him see that the problem is important to her. The second step
is to tell the problem clearly. Jocelyn can elaborate the things
that make her upset. She may tell him that as an intern, he
should abide the code of ethics of the company. The code of
ethics states: Interns shall conduct themselves with integrity
and in an honourable and ethical manner. Interns shall uphold
the values of truth, honesty and trustworthiness and safeguard
human life and welfare and the environment.
In keeping with these basic tenets, interns shall:

Jocelyn can also remind her fellow intern that

violating the code of ethics may result in removal from his
internship. The third step is to tell him to share his point of
view by genuinely try to hear his concerns and feelings. The
fourth step is to try to take the others perspective; that is to
try to see the problem through his eyes because the opposing
viewpoint can make sense to Jocelyn, even if she dont agree
with it. The fifth step is to propose specific solutions, and
invite the other to propose solutions, too. The last step is to be
willing to compromise. If no solution has been reached,
Jocelyn may schedule another time to issue and continue the
discussion. When nothing seems to work, Jocelyn can talk to a
trained professional for help.
