An Emissions
EU Turn

Teachable Moment
For Hard Times

BY IAN CAMERON
Ashbourne, England

BY MIKE BREZONICK
Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA

In late June, the United Kingdom

will decide whether to remain in the
European Union. A vote to exit the
28-member bloc could have huge
repercussions not least upon the
United Kingdom, other countries in
Europe and virtually every partner
around the world.
Indeed, U.S. President Barack
Obama has been highly vocal in his
support for the U.K. remaining in
the EU, and the vote has implications for most of the economies of
the world. The International Monetary Fund, whose main job is to ensure the stability of the international
monetary system, claimed quitting
the EU would lead to a protracted
period of heightened uncertainty
for the U.K.
But a no vote could have consequences for emissions from cars,
trucks, buses, ships and trains, because it could mean that the U.K. is
released from emissions regulations
no longer governed by EU rules.
European Union lawmakers will
rightly continue to enforce strict rules
on the amount of pollution entering
the atmosphere from vehicles long after the U.K. decides whether it wants
to be part of the EU family. But a new
U.K., free from EU policy makers,
could turn its back on any proposed
new emissions regulations formulated
by the remaining bloc of countries.
If the U.K. decides it doesnt like
the sound of new rules, it would not
be not bound by them. It could even
go further and repeal any emissions
laws it had previously signed up for,
which could be good news for all
things diesel.
The U.K. may well vote to stay in
EU. But if it doesnt, the question of
emissions and the future for dieselpowered equipment could suddenly
look quite different. dpi

A visitor to bauma 2016 told me the

only thing that surprised him about
the show was that few people were
interested in talking about the state of
the equipment business. Maybe, he
mused, they didnt want to rehash a
depressing subject.
Everywhere, there are negative
headlines about the global equipment
industry. The words most often used
are flat, struggling and weak. Everybody seems resigned to hard times.
Whenever I see all the gloom, it
takes me back to my early days in the
business and the lesson I got in how
not to look at down markets when I
visited the group president of a global
powertrain manufacturer. It was coming off its best year ever, but the current year was going the opposite way.
I tried to commiserate, uttering
platitudes about, I guess if things
are down, all you can do is take your
lumps, and Some years, the market
doesnt cooperate and you just dont
make money.
The executive, not known for suffering fools, gave me a hard stare.
Young man, he said, not entirely
gently, do you know what my board
would say if I walked in and said,
Well, the markets down, we wont
make money this year? Theyd ask
me what I am going to do about it. And
If I didnt have any answers, theyd
find someone who did.
Echoes of that come back to me
these days when I hear the complaints about how bad things are. As if
growth was a guarantee.
The companies that succeed make
hard, sometimes painful choices, but
they do something other than lament.
Ultimately, there is always work to
be done. Things are still planted, built
or repaired. Somebody gets that business. I suspect its not the companies
that just wait for better times. dpi

POWERTRAIN

Whether for mobile working machines like this

Haulotte telehandler marine vessels, railcars and
locomotives or power generation applications, system
integration can optimize the entire drivetrain or powertrain, said Dr. Marko Dekena, executive vice president at AVL List.

POWERTRAIN

SYSTEM INTEGRATION

Drivetrain and powertrain components come together into an

integrated system following a holistic approach
BY ROBERTA PRANDI

System integration is a real paradigm change and needs a

holistic approach. It starts with the system requirements followed by the system specifications and ends in the subordinated components definition. It has the task to optimize the
whole system during the planning phase toward optimum
function at highest efficiency and lowest fuel consumption.

he concept of system integration has become

more important for manufacturers of mobile vehicles, marine vessels or power stations. Diesel
Progress talked to Dr. Marko Dekena, executive
vice president at AVL List, to better understand what this
approach means, what advantages it can bring and which
prospects it has for success in the market.
AVL List develops powertrain systems as well as instrumentation and test systems. Dekena was recently confirmed to the new board of the International Council on
Combustion Engines (CIMAC) as one of the vice presidents,
Technical Program.

DP: Would you give some examples of what system

integration can mean for various applications, such as
marine, power generation, oil and gas, railway and other
mobile applications?
Dekena: The advantages of system integration can be
very diverse for different applications. For marine applications, for example, these can start with the integration of
both mechanical and electrical systems, thereby enabling
new degrees of flexibility in the arrangement of main and
auxiliary engines. When combined with onboard batteries,
such hybrid systems offer a huge potential for the optimization of overall system performance.
On locomotives and mining trucks where the powertrain
continued on page 6

Diesel Progress: Dr. Dekena, could you discuss the concept of system integration? What does it mean in practice?
Dr. Marko Dekena: Every power or transmission system
but also the respective auxiliary systems contain a
variety of components. In the past, these components were
taken from the market as available and installed mainly
based on criteria like function and acceptable output and
costs. Such a system cannot be an optimum solution.

Dekena: Virtual system integration is a valuable methodology in the entire development process. Extended system
simulations of ships, mining trucks, locomotives or power
plants support concept and investment decisions at the
beginning of the development phase. Furthermore, modelbased approaches help to develop an optimum application
according to the given requirements, even merging the
simulation and testing world.
A good example is the model-based development of the
control system, during which the hardware control system
is running together with models of engines and other components of large engine applications as hardware in the
loop. Due to the reduced testing effort, the model-based
approaches are very beneficial in view of cost and reduction of development time. Besides, virtual system integration is a criterion for quality assurance, as in a very early
stage of the development phase, the system behavior can
be investigated and possible weak points can be detected.
Development loops are much faster and cheaper. Virtual
system integration can be used seamlessly during the entire development process supporting numerous tasks.

Dr. Marko Dekena was recently confirmed to the new

board of the International Council on Combustion Engines
(CIMAC) as one of the vice presidents, Technical Program.

is mostly already electrified, system integration will at a future stage encompass the aftertreatment system integration through to hybridization.
For stationary power generation, system integration can
mean the integration of alternative energy sources, such as
solar and wind power, while maintaining grid performance
and grid stability. It can also mean the power management
of multiple engine installations for maximum efficiency of
both engine and aftertreatment systems.
All these applications have something in common, namely
the need for accurate system simulations in order to optimize
system performance rather than focusing only on components.

DP: In your opinion, what are the benefits of system integration? Which key aspect would you say makes this approach interesting for manufacturers?
Dekena: System integration provides benefits for both the
manufacturers and the users. The manufacturers strengthen
their position compared to their competitors based on the
aforementioned advantages. The users save operational
costs. In the case of hybridization, where it makes sense
from the operational point of view, a reduction of fuel consumption up to 30% can be realized. So a short-term return
of investment can be achieved despite the higher initial development effort.

DP: What does system integration entail for the vehicle

manufacturer or the plant operator? What type of work needs
to be done ahead of the final project with the various suppliers?
Dekena: First of all, suppliers as well as OEMs (original
equipment manufacturers) and plant operators have to be
open for new approaches in planning and development of
complete power systems. They have to accept that the bigger effort in planning and optimization of power systems will
finally be rewarded by a stronger position on the market,
higher efficiency and availability of the plant and lower total
cost of ownership, respectively.

DP: What is the future of this approach in the various

markets? Do you see some applications or markets that are
already more advanced with this approach some that are
particularly promising for future developments?
Dekena: For sure, the automotive industry is leading
in system integration today. But in the marine and rail industries, which are supported by the CIMAC organization,
we can already experience growing development efforts
towards system integration. For this purpose, CIMAC has
introduced a new system integration working group. The
main driver is fuel cost reduction. This means not only lower
operational costs, but also an essential decrease in CO2
(carbon dioxide) emissions and thus a valuable contribution
to protect our environment. dpi

DP: How much more complicated is system integration

in the developing phase compared to less integrated and
more conventional development work?
Dekena: Of course, the effort during the development
phase is higher and called the front loading approach, but it
finally pays off. With this approach, a solution can be created
which lowers total cost of ownership, which means saving
operational costs and increasing the quality and reliability of
the system. In addition, time to market will be reduced.

FOR MORE INFORMATION

DP: How much of the development phase can profit from

virtual tools? Can you explain which kinds of tools can be
used to make system integration easier or more successful?

Hybrid drivetrain solutions and vehicle electrification are popular topics for manufacturers of off-highway machines, especially in the
underground mining segment. John Deere said
it has adopted the technology in two hybrid
wheel loader models: the 644K and 944K.

DRIVETRAIN
GOES ELECTRIC

John Deere demonstrates line of electric drivetrain

components for off-highway machinery
BY ROBERTA PRANDI

ohn Deere dedicated one side of its booth at bauma

2016 in Munich, Germany, to components integration
or in other words, to an integrated all-from-one-source
electrification system.
The interest of the visitors actually surpassed all our expectations, said Martin Ryley, marketing support manager for
John Deere Power Systems. His remarks seemed to confirm
that the topic of hybrids and vehicle electrification is hot in the
field of off-highway machines, especially in the underground
mining segment.
The solution proposed by John Deere is an electrified powertrain for use in off-highway machines. These types of drivetrains achieve their best efficiency in vehicles with cyclic operation, such as wheel loaders, the company said. Ryley said
that electrified powertrains are already utilized in the John
Deere 644K and 944K hybrid wheel loaders. Both offer an
energy recovery system that captures energy when the loader
is slowed down, John Deere said, and the 944K hybrid loader
is equipped with electric final drives at the wheels.
The basic configuration for a series electric drivetrain by
John Deere is composed of a diesel engine, generator with
pump drive, inverter and a gearbox driven by an electric motor.
Darren Almond, global drivetrain business manager at John
Deere Power Systems, said that all the components are proprietary and directly supplied by John Deere. The inverters are
designed and produced by John Deere Electronic Solutions,
the generators and motors are developed with supplier partnerships and the pump drives and gearboxes are manufactured
by the John Deere Power Systems group, he said.

DIESEL PROGRESS INTERNATIONAL

All components and the electric drive system are proven by the companys expertise in the off-highway market,
Almond said. Electric motors are designed specifically for
traction drive applications, and all our products for electric
drivetrains are developed and manufactured to withstand
the rugged conditions found in off-highway operation.
John Deere said it offers three sizes for its generator
and pump drive assembly in its equipment, covering 140 to
400 kW. The lower power band from 140 to 200 kW
is covered by the EMD3 motor and transmission, while
the GPD3 and GPD5 generators and pump drives cover
200 to 400 kW with final wheel drives.
As far as inverters, John Deere Electronic Solutions
said it offers a complete family up to 300 kVA for ac motors, with common motor control software for interior
permanent magnet (IPM) or induction motors. All the
inverters are based on a modular concept and feature
high-performance digital signal processor (DSP) realtime inverter software to support advanced functionalities such as field-oriented control, the company said.
The inverter family is composed of two single and two
dual inverters for power up to 280 kVA each, John Deere
said. They all operate at high voltages up to 750 Vdc
and and are certified to IP67 standards for sealing protection, the company said.
A parallel output configuration is also supported by
dual inverters. The two outputs can be either completely independent, with one driving a motor and the
other one a generator, or they can work in parallel and
control a larger electric machine requiring high current,
John Deere said.
The advantage of a complete electric drivetrain from
a single source is of course that customers can rely on
the John Deere knowledge and expertise for all steps in
the development process, Almond said. dpi

However, following the global economic crisis, national

demand declined to 15 708 units in 2009 before a robust
recovery resulted in sales peaking at 33 595 units in 2011.
Sales declined to 32 416 units in 2012 and dropped further to 27 748 units in 2013 as construction activity slowed.
In 2014, the backhoe loader market dipped by an additional
19% to 22 571 units, followed by a further drop of 6% in
2015 to 21 209 units.
Leyland Deere entered the market by selling 27 units in
2011 and then saw a significant increase to 662 units in
2012, representing a 2% share of the total market. It retained the same market share the following year despite
a marginal dip in sales to 557 units. The next two years
proved to be difficult, however, as in 2014, sales dropped
more than 50% to 250 units a total that was further
halved to 126 units in 2015 when the company saw its market share slip to below 1%.
Despite being in the market for five years, Leyland Deere
could not improve its presence in the countrys backhoe
loader market. While it had plans to introduce a wide range
of construction equipment, Leyland Deere remained a
single-product company with accumulated losses increasing steadily.
Ashok Leyland felt that the joint venture neither fit strategically with its core truck and bus business nor generated
profits. Thus, it has taken the decision to exit the construction
equipment business altogether and has taken a write-down
of approximately US$22.4 million in its books on account of
the operation.
The company said it would concentrate on its core business areas, such as manufacturing trucks, buses and engines, and it would also focus on its finance business and
the fast-growing defense sector. To date, no news has
been released on the terms of the separation or dissolution
of the joint venture. dpi

shok Leyland, Indias second-largest truck maker

by sales, has announced plans to exit the construction equipment business in order to reduce noncore
assets and reduce its debt. The Hinduja Groups
flagship company is primarily in the truck and bus business,
where it currently has a market share of nearly 30% within
its home market
Ashok Leyland John Deere Construction Equipment Co.
Ltd. (Leyland Deere), a 50/50 joint venture between Ashok
Leyland and John Deere, was formed in 2009. The company established its manufacturing facility in Gummidipoondi
city, Tamil Nadu state, 50 km from Chennai, where Ashok
Leyland is based. The plant, which has a covered area of
18,500 m2 and a total plot area of 20 hectares, began production in late 2011 of the 435 backhoe loader powered by
a 56 kW Ashok Leyland engine. Leyland Deere launched
its second model, the 435E, in November 2013 during the
Excon trade fair.
The company recorded production of 50 units in its first
year of operation, which rose to 645 units in 2012. Output
then declined marginally in 2013 to 626 units, but fell quite
significantly to 180 units in 2014 and just 103 units in 2015.
It has been reported that no new machines have been produced at the companys plant since October 2015.
India is the worlds single largest market for backhoe
loaders, and the total number of machines sold more than
tripled from 2004 to 2007, reaching a peak of 21 754 units.
These gains were primarily achieved due to increased activity levels in all end-user segments and a rapidly growing economy.

TELEMATICS

OFF-HIGHWAY
DIAGNOSTICS

Cummins Connected Diagnostics available for

variety of Cummins-powered construction, mining
and material handling equipment

Recently introduced for the offhighway market, Cummins Connected Diagnostics sends notifications to the user within seconds of
a fault code occurring to identify
and prioritize the fault codes and
provide a recommendation based
on the primary engine system fault,
the company said.

Cummins-certified service providers in the area. According

to the company, the priority level assigned to the fault advises whether immediate action is needed or the length of
time the equipment can continue working before equipment
operation is affected.
The Connected Diagnostics mobile app is designed to
extend the services reach by allowing customer management or operators to receive notifications directly from
Cummins on their Apple or Android mobile phone or tablet, Cummins said. This information enables appropriate
decision-making, the company said.
According to Cummins, nearly every Cummins electronic
engine is fully compatible with Connected Diagnostics and
only requires an active telematics device installed in the
equipment to transmit data for automated analysis and reporting. The system is applicable to all types of construction, mining and material handling equipment powered by
Cummins engines with a displacement of 3.8 L or greater.
By October, Cummins said it would launch Connected
Diagnostics into the North American and European offhighway markets as compatible telematics service partners
become integrated. The Connected Diagnostics mobile app
will also be available for existing customers to download
from Apples app store and Google Play. dpi

lready active in more than 35 000 on-highway

vehicles, Cummins has introduced Connected
Diagnostics to the off-highway market.
Through an active telematics connection, equipment powered by Cummins can wirelessly send engine
data to Cummins for immediate diagnosis of an engine
system fault alert and have information delivered back to
the customer within seconds, the company said. The Connected Diagnostics notification can be instantly delivered
to anyone the user specifies including equipment management, company leadership and equipment operators
through an email notification or the Connected Diagnostics
mobile app, Cummins said.
When a fault occurs, the system uses the Cummins Expert Diagnostics System (EDS) to search for similar fault
code events across the in-service engine model population
and identify the most probable root causes, the company
said. According to Cummins, the EDS is continually updated by ongoing repair cases undertaken by Cumminscertified service technicians worldwide, which can reduce
the number of diagnostic steps by up to 50%.
Connected Diagnostics notifications are sent to the
user within seconds of a fault code occurring, the company said. These notifications are intended to identify and
prioritize the fault codes and provide a recommendation
based on the primary engine system fault, outlining the
most probable root cause and identifying any impacts to
performance, Cummins said. They also contain a link to

32ND ANNUAL ENGINE TECHNICAL REVIEW

Company News
Cimco Marine develops and manufactures products using
its self-contained belt propulsor unit (S-BPU) technology, targeting light-, medium- and heavy-duty use on the global governmental, commercial and pleasure craft marine market.
The company was established in 2012 through a joint
venture between Camco Private Equity Group Ltd. and
Marinediesel Sweden AB. The formation of Cimco Marine
included the intellectual property of a patented belt-driven,
stern-drive system. Camco owns 45% of the joint venture
with another 45% owned by Marinediesel Sweden. Power
Equipment Pty. Ltd. became a shareholder in May 2014
and owns 10% of Cimco Marine.
Engine News
Cimco Marines first product, released in 2015, was the
OXE Diesel S-BPU high-performance outboard rated from
110 to 147 kW. Built using a modular design and powered
by a marinized 2.0 L automotive diesel engine, the engine complies with the NATO single-fuel directive, Cimco
Marine said.
The technology behind the OXE Diesel allows it to directly replace conventional petrol outboard units in the 110
to 295 kW range, the company said. According to Cimco,
it also eliminates traditional problems associated with high
torque versus bevel gears and vertical shafts. S-BPU technology allows for more than 850 Nm of torque on the propeller and up to 10 000 hours in contrast to the conventional
petrol outboards or stern drive systems, Cimco said.

the air cleaners, aftertreatment and exhaust system installed from the factory. A plug-and-play solution, the engine is ready to be put on a trailer and run without the need
for brackets, mufflers or additional mounting equipment, the
company said.
Lower owning and operating costs will also benefit customers, Caterpillar said, as the 3512E (HD) offers up to a 5%
improvement in fuel economy and increased ambient and altitude capability compared to the 3512C (HD) Tier 2 engine.
Caterpillar Marine upgraded its Cat C280 mediumspeed diesel engine for Tier 4 and International Maritime
Organization (IMO) Tier 3 service. The Tier 4 standards applied to all new U.S.-flagged vessels starting in January 2014
and IMO 3 standards applied to all new vessels entering IMO
NOx emission control areas (NECA) from January 2016.
The C280 engines are available in eight, 12- and 16-cylinder
models spanning a power range from 2300 to 5060 kW as
main engines conventional and diesel-electric as well
as auxiliary generator sets. Caterpillar said that the latest
models offer significant benefits over earlier units. As well as
reduced emissions, they consume less fuel and have lower
through-life owning and operating costs, the company said.
Caterpillar also introduced the Cat C7.1 high-performance
diesel engine for recreational applications. The new propulsion engine is available in three ratings: 373, 336 and
298 kW at 2900 r/min. All C7.1 power ratings meet U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier 3, IMO 2,
European Union (EU) recreational craft directive and EU
Stage 3a emissions standards, Caterpillar said.

the launch of two new G-Drives. The new Cursor 16, rated
up to 582 kW, expands FPTs power generation portfolio
at the top end of its power range, while the S8000 satisfies
lower power requirements with a rating up to 36 kW, the
company said.
According to FPT, the Cursor 16 G-Drive was developed
to offer up to 582 kW, delivering the power of an 18 L engine
within the architecture of a 13 L unit. The six-cylinder engine offers good load acceptance, is one of the most compact G-Drives on the market and is the only 600 kVa unit in
a 400 kVa package, the company said.
The Cursor 16 G-Drive has heavy-duty and high-resistance
components, such as steel pistons and a compacted graphite iron cylinder head rather than cast iron, FPT said.

Engine News
At this years Middle East Electricity show, Doosan showcased new 1.8, 2.4 and 3.4 L power generation engines.
These engines were developed based on the industrial G2
engines as well as the D18, D24 and D34 a compact,
high-efficiency engine that does not require the installation
of separate DPFs because it is equipped with its own ultralow PM combustion technology, the company said. The
new engines comply with Stage 4/Tier 4 final emissions
regulations, Doosan said.
On the industrial engine side, the Tier 4 final-compliant
DL06, a 5.9 L diesel engine rated 141 kW, and DL08, a 7.6 L
unit rated 213 kW, were introduced to the market. Doosan
said it would also offer its G2 engines with common rail
technology and exhaust gas aftertreatment in accordance
with the planned Stage 5 emissions legislation for the 22 to
73.5 kW power range.
The concept design of new Stage 5 D18/D24 engines
below 55 kW is aimed at optimizing the DPF system, and
the D34 above 55kW is focused on increasing SCR efficiency and improving fuel consumption via the low backpressure, the company said. The Stage 5 D18 and D24
will have a one-side power take-off (PTO), and the D34 will
have two side PTOs. These engines allow for up to 100%
power at the front PTO, Doosan said.
Doosan PSI LLC, a 50/50 joint venture of Doosan Infracore
and Power Solutions International (PSI), said it would launch
the 11, 15 and 22 L lean-burn engines with increased 10%
specific power and improved electric efficiency compared
to existing stoichiometric engines.

FPT Industrials 15.9 L,

six-cylinder Cursor
16 engine for power
generation applications.

At the lower end of the range, the S8000 G-Drive combines high power output with lower cost of ownership in a
compact design, the company said. The 2.9 L, three-cylinder,
naturally aspirated engine has maintenance intervals of up to
600 hours while offering fuel consumption that is an average
of 6% better than its four-cylinder competitors, FPT said. It
has reduced complexity and a compact design it is 11%
smaller than an equivalent four-cylinder engine and is suitable for emergency and prime power applications that do not
require emissions regulation compliance, the company said.
Emissions Technology
Developed ahead of Euro 6 and Tier 4 final emissions regulations implemented in 2014, FPT Industrials exhaust gas
recirculation (EGR)-free patented high-efficiency selective
catalytic reduction (HI-eSCR) aftertreatment solution maximizes combustion efficiency to reduce particulate matter production and meet legislation. The solution uses clean air rather
than exhaust gas. HI-eSCR converts NOx to diatomic nitrogen
and water and does not need a DPF, the company said.
To comply with Stage 5 emissions standards, FPT launched
HI-eSCR2, its second generation of HI-eSCR aftertreatment
technology. To meet both particle mass and particle count requirements, the HI-eSCR2 system has an integrated particle
filter on the SCR, making it a compact solution, FPT said.
FPT said its solution is flexible, with up to 20 different
layouts available for each power node, and avoids additional redesign efforts from the vehicle manufacturer. The

Engine News
The newly developed Hatz 4H50 was presented for the
first time at the Intermat 2015 trade show in a variant without exhaust aftertreatment: the Hatz 4H50TI. By eliminating
sulfur-sensitive components such as EGR and DOC, the
engine can be operated with diesel fuel having sulfur content up to 5000 ppm, which is important for many markets
in Africa, South America and Asia, Hatz said.
According to the company, the 4H50TI complies with
Stage 2/Tier 2 emissions regulations in the range up to 75 kW
as well as Stage 3a in the range below 37 kW. The latter
applies particularly to operation as a generator with engine
speeds of 1500 and 1800 r/min, Hatz said.
Because of the elimination of exhaust aftertreatment
and due to emissions legislation requirements the Hatz
4H50TI can be operated with higher performance, the company said. The maximum rated output is
62 kW and maximum torque is 265 Nm.
At 158 kg, the total weight of the
4H50TI is significantly less than the
4H50TIC, Hatz said. Because the EGR
has been eliminated, the specific fuel
consumption of 218 g/kWh at the best
point is slightly higher than that of the
basic engine, the company said.
Besides the existing water-cooled
Hatz four-cylinder 4H50 engines, Hatz
announced that there would also be
three-cylinder engines available in the
future. For an optimal combustion
process, best operating characteristics and reduced emissions, they will
be equipped with Bosch common rail
technology with a maximum injection
pressure of 1800 bar, similar to the fourcylinder units, the company said.
Due to the turbocharger and the intercooler, Hatz said the engines have
a maximum torque of 185 Nm at 1600
to 2000 r/min and a maximum power
rating of 42 kW. With a displacement
of 1.5 L and maximum speed of 2800 r/
min, the engines require an installation
space of less than 0.25 m3, according
to the company.

standards, Hatz said. According to the engine maker, the
Hatz 3H50TI does not need any exhaust aftertreatment and
complies with Stage 3a/Tier 4 interim in the 19 to 37 kW
range. The 3H50TIC was designed particularly for the U.S.
and Canada markets as well as for some Asian countries. To
comply with Tier 4 final (19 to 56 kW) and Stage 3b (37 to 56
kW) emissions standards, the engines use a combination of
external EGR and DOC, Hatz said. Both engine variants will
extend the Hatz engine product range from 2018.

output power.

Similar to Kohlers existing EFI engines, the company

said it anticipates that the new models will deliver an estimated 25% in fuel savings versus similar Kohler carbureted
engines under comparable load conditions. Both engines
use Kohlers closed-loop EFI system, which means an oxygen sensor in the muffler continuously monitors the air/fuel
mixture. If the air/fuel mixture strays from the ideal level, the
sensor triggers adjustments to the amount of fuel injected
into the system, Kohler said.
In addition to delivering optimal fuel efficiency and turnkey starting, the technology also provides improved power
and enhanced reliability, the company said. Since electronic
fuel injection systems replace carburetors, downtime due to
carburetor-related issues is eliminated, Kohler said.
In additional news, the companys line of engines for walkbehind lawn mowers is expanding with the introduction of
the Kohler XTX Series. Developed for long-term reliability,
the XTX Series is the companys first engine that does not
require an oil change for the life of the engine, Kohler said.
The unit integrates several premium features as well as an
operator-centric design for user-friendly performance, the
company said.

is rated 24.2 kW at 3600 r/min, the LPG version has a rating of 22 kW at 3600 r/min and the natural gas version is
rated 20.4 kW at 3600 r/min. All variants are electronically
controlled, liquid-cooled, three-cylinder engines with a displacement of 962 cc. The WG972 is based on Kubotas industrial diesel engine platform with the same footprint as
the Kubota D902, the company said.

high-speed diesel model lines in the 700 to 4500 kW range.

The first of the D96 series is a V20 engine rated up to
1500 kW at 1900 r/min. The cylinder banks are arranged
at a 108 angle, and the firing order was chosen to minimize the need for rotary vibration damping, Liebherr said.
These features allow low-vibration engine operation, the
company said. The D96 series engines will comply with
Tier 4 final emissions regulations using an SCR aftertreatment system.
Liebherr said it is developing a gas engine for stationary
applications with a rating of 1070 kW that is based upon
the D9620 diesel engine. Production is targeted for the
end of 2017.

With a 12-cylinder
vee configuration, the
D9812 diesel engine is
the first available model of
the Liebherr D98 series
engines.

LIEBHERR

With a specific power output up to 43.5 kW per liter, the

D98 engine series has the highest power density available
in this market segment, Liebherr said. All the key components such as injectors, high-pressure injection pump
and intelligent engine control unit are designed for high
efficiency and maximum fuel economy, the company said.
The D98 series will be available in three different cylinder
layouts. The V12 is the first to be introduced, and Liebherr
said it would be followed by a V16 and V20 configuration.
All engine components are scaled to ensure appropriate
performance, the company said. According to Liebherr, this
modular engine allows for reduced spare parts diversity
and offers more flexibility.
Because an SCR system is available in addition to the
standard specification, the D98 series complies with Tier 4
final exhaust emissions limits. Production of these new
engines will start at the end of 2016 in Colmar, France,
and in Bulle, Switzerland. Field tests are already being
held, Liebherr said.
Liebherr also introduced the G946 1 mobile gas engine. It
links low-emissions gas fuel technology with Liebherr diesel
engine features, the company said. The G946 1 is rated
330 kW at 2000 r/min. Liebherr said it was developed for use
in construction, agriculture and forestry machinery; as motive
power for rails; and for other industrial applications.

32ND ANNUAL ENGINE TECHNICAL REVIEW

Engine News
In the past 12 months, Perkins has launched two new engines and said it is ready for Stage 5 emissions standards.
In November 2015, the company launched the 403F-E17T,
a new addition to its 400 Series range of engines. Designed
to meet Tier 4 final emissions standards, the engine follows
in the footsteps of the electronically controlled 404F-E22TA,
Perkins said.
A 1.7 L turbocharged engine, the Perkins 403F-E17T offers common rail direct injection and full authority electronics that provide a significant increase in performance and
allow OEMs greater flexibility in tailoring the engine to specific applications, Perkins said.
The engines compact package size and architecture,
featuring a small DOC, allows OEMs to adopt machine designs across a variety of compact applications, including
small agricultural equipment, wheel loaders, hydraulic excavators and aerial lift platforms, the company said.
The 403F-E17T is rated 30 kW with a maximum torque
of 125 Nm at 1800 r/min, while rated speed is up to 2800
r/min. The engine does not require an air-to-air chargeair cooler, which Perkins said saves space in tight engine
compartments and allows OEMs to reduce installation
cost and complexity.
At Agritechnica 2015, Perkins introduced a new 12.5 L
variable speed engine that meets Stage 4 emissions regulations. The 2206F-E13TA model, which was designed to
meet the specific needs of the agricultural market, is rated
up to 375 kW at 1900 r/min and 405 kW at 1700 r/min. The
engine uses a DOC, DPF and SCR to meet Stage 4 emissions standards, the company said.

economy and offers engine-management and emissionscontrol systems developed in-house, the company said. The
new Stage 5 engine includes three platforms in the Scania
lineup 9, 13 and 16 L and covers output ranges from
202 to 882 kW.
For power generation, Scanias latest addition is a Tier 4
final-compliant gas V8.
During 2015, Scania added an updated 16.4 L V8 engine
to its marine solution range. The engine ranges from 662
to 846 kW, depending on the application and rating. While
this addition to the engine range offers more power, the
size of the complete installation remains the same, Scania
said. The engine is part of Scanias modular system and
makes use of the companys common rail XPI fuel injection
technology, first introduced to truck engines in 2007, the
company said.
On the truck side, Scania has begun to launch a range
of products with alternative fuels and powertrains for Euro
6. According to Scania, this drive is a step in the companys commitment to offering the widest range of sustainable transport solutions. The highlight of the program is a
Scania-developed hybrid truck for urban distribution combining electric and biodiesel operation, the company said.
Other engines run on gas and biogas, biodiesel, bioethanol
and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO).
In 2015, Scania gave the green light for using HVO in existing Euro 5 and Euro 6 engines. The renewable biodiesel fuel can yield up to a 90% reduction in CO2 emissions,
Scania said.
Scania has received several contracts for buses. One
is from the Colombian city of Cartagena, which will use
147 Scania Euro 6 gas buses on its new transport system,
Scania said. Cartagena has selected Scania as the provider for two trunk lines for the citys new Bus Rapid Transport
(BRT) system called Transcaribe.

system and has a dry weight of 920 kg. Standard equipment

includes a mechanical governor and smoke limiting system
plus intercooler and water-cooled wastegate. The unit utilizes a standard dry air filter with stainless-steel net, watercooled exhaust manifold and water-cooled turbocharger.
An LCD electronic monitor panel with redundancy gauges
is available and works as a black box with engine data storage capability, Seatek said. It collects samples every second
for over 1000 hours, the company said. Collected data includes engine revolutions, water temperature, oil pressure
and temperature, boost pressure, exhaust gas temperature,
voltage and gearbox oil pressure.

The 800 TA marine

diesel by Seatek is rated
573 kW and has obtained

32ND ANNUAL ENGINE TECHNICAL REVIEW

Power Range
Diesel: 11 to 225 kW
Engine News
For stationary and mobile applications, Steyr Motors said it
has developed a compact diesel-electric power pack based
on a two-cylinder M12 diesel engine with a horizontal parallel twin-piston configuration and a new electric machine
(e-machine).
The assembly of the engine, e-machine, aftertreatment
system, radiators, fans and all peripheral components within a compact frame including acoustic insulation walls
is easily transportable because of its small size and low
weight, Steyr said. Overall dimensions are approximately
700 x 500 x 450 mm, and dry weight is about 100 kg.
The M12 power pack can be equipped with either unit
injection, which results in a rating of 26.4 kW at 3600 r/min,
or common rail technology, which has a rating of 40 kW at
3200 r/min.
Besides using the diesel-electric power pack as a stationary power generator, applications include use as a
propulsion or auxiliary power unit aboard land or amphibious vehicles, boats and large unmanned aerial vehicles
as well as a range extender for electric-driven vehicles,
Steyr said.
The standard M12 power pack diesel-electric version
uses the new Steyr E1 e-machine, but it is also possible
to run other dc and ac generators, hydraulic pumps, CVT
transmissions and more, the company said. The Steyr
E1 is a permanent magnet machine using transversal
flux technology and provides 40 kW continuous electrical
output with a maximum torque of 152 Nm at 2800 r/min.
Peak electric power is 50 kW, nominal voltage range is
300 to 400 Vdc and the maximum voltage range is 260
to 430 Vdc.
Besides the integration in the M12 power pack, the Steyr
E1 is also used for the next generation of the Steyr HDS,
the marine hybrid drive system of Steyr Motors. The system is being tested and fine-tuned, the company said. Steyr
said that it expects that it will offer a significant increase in
electrical output at the same voltage level 20 kW continuous electrical power at 48 Vdc. The official introduction
of the Steyr HDS is expected in late 2016.
Application News
Steyr Motors completed a special railway project for
Siemens in 2015: the development of a diesel-electric propulsion system for the electric locomotive Siemens Vectron,
according to specific demands for areas without overhead
electric lines. The solution had to be a compact module
that fit in the limited available space but powerful enough to
move the 2.4 tonne train, Steyr said.
The result was an efficient diesel-electric power module
that combines a six-cylinder combustion engine with cooling, exhaust, intake and aftertreatment systems as well as
power electronics and e-machine in a frame approximately

1.0 x 1.3 x 1.7 m, the company said. In addition, the hybrid power module is equipped with a high-pressure EGR
system, a special DPF and a tailor-made exhaust pipe for
admixture of ambient air according to the Venturi principle,
Steyr said. Due to the small installation space available, the
company said it was necessary to customize the generator
and power distribution system. The current orders and production volumes include a large-scale order for the Finnish
national railways and a number of orders for private and
public European train operators, Steyr Motors said.

In the marine sector, Steyr Motors acquired a five-year

contract with the U.S. Navy for powering the new generation of 7 m rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) with diesel engines
made in Steyr, Austria. After two years of development and
testing, the SE266E40 was chosen as the new engine for
the Navys 7 m RIBs as well as the 7 m RIBs sold abroad,
the company said.
Company News
The expansion of Steyr Motors headquarters in Steyr,
Austria including the new innovation and engineering
center required an investment of about US$20.3 million,
the company said. The Steyr Motors premises have 16 test
cells and measurement facilities. These include 10 engine
dynamometers with asynchronous machines, component
testing for aggregates, emissions testing up to Euro 6, swirl
port measurements, an injector test system for unit injection and common rail technology and a high-voltage test
container with 1.8 and 3.6 kV, the company said. A semianechoic chamber with loudspeaker measurement system
(LMS) equipment is designed for vibration measurement
and testing of sound power and sound pressure as well as
airborne and structure-borne noise.
The innovation and engineering center provides a range
of options, such as endurance, functional, emissions and
component testing as well as other services, Steyr said. In
addition, the premises and R&D capacity, prototype assembly and production received a boost in order to cover rising
demand, the company said.
Steyr Motors restructured its business fields. At the beginning of 2016, the company launched its engineering competence as a separate business field instead of keeping it

integrated in each of the specialized fields, such as vehicle,

marine and industrial. The company said one of the reasons for this change was to better highlight the wide scope
of Steyrs engineering services, which includes the rental of
the test facilities for independent testing of engines, prototypes and components as well as the ability for other suppliers to outsource engineering assignments. It also facilitated
the coordination and implementation of overlapping product
innovations, such as the introduction of the common rail
versions of vehicle, marine and industrial engines, which
are currently in development and testing, and the implementation of the Steyr E1 into all of the new hybrid systems.

The High Power Density (HPD) engine brake
from Jacobs Vehicle Systems realizes 1.5
times the braking performance of traditional
compression release (CR) braking over the
engines entire operating range and more
than twice the braking performance at lower
engine speeds, the company said.

BRAKING IN A
NEW PRODUCT

New Jacobs engine brake designed to enhance fuel

economy and improve total cost of ownership
BY IAN CAMERON

HPD engine brake technology consists of valve bridges

that incorporate a deactivating mechanism to disable the
intake and exhaust main valve events from the main event
rockers, together with rocker arms to provide the intake and
exhaust brake valve motions, Jacobs said.
According to Tom Howell, director of new technology at
Jacobs Vehicle Systems, a patented two-stroke technology is central to the new engine brake. Unlike a conventional engine brake, which has one compression release
(CR) and one brake gas recirculation (BGR) event per cam
rotation, the HPD achieves two braking events per cam
rotation, he said.
In standard four-stroke CR engine braking systems, Howell said that the CR event occurs at the first top dead center
(TDC) timing at the end of the compression stroke. It is not
possible to have a second CR event at the second TDC timing, he said, as the exhaust valve has been open during the
exhaust stroke, which prevents the buildup of pressure in the
cylinder that results in retarding power. This means there is
only one CR event during an engine cycle, Howell said.
With HPD two-stroke braking, the CR event is the same
for the first TDC timing, but the main intake and exhaust
valve events are deactivated using collapsing bridges, Jacobs said, enabling the buildup of pressure in the cylinder
at the second TDC event, which is released by a second
CR event. Because the HPD engine brake allows two CR
events for each engine cycle, the retarding power is significantly increased, the company said.

he drive by engine makers to provide high power

density to improve fuel economy and total cost of
ownership has prompted Jacobs Vehicle Systems,
Bloomfield, Connecticut, USA, to launch a new engine brake: the High Power Density (HPD) engine brake.
The company said this new compression release brake
technology for commercial vehicles answers the call for
high braking performance at low engine speed, offering
fleets enhanced fuel economy, lower total cost of ownership and increased payloads.
According to Jacobs, engine brake retarding performance is becoming increasingly crucial. The key strategies
for improving fuel efficiency include reducing the natural retarding of the vehicle caused by wind resistance, engine,
drivetrain and rolling resistance from the tires.
With truck and load weight remaining constant, additional
supplemental retarding is required to compensate for these
reductions in aerodynamic drag and rolling resistance,
Jacobs said. Industry trends, such as downspeeding and
downsizing of engines, only add to this increased demand
for engine braking performance, the company said.
Market demand for improved fuel economy has also encouraged some fleet operators to convert to natural gas
engines, the smaller turbochargers and lower compression
ratios of which can diminish brake retarding power by up
to 25%, Jacobs said. The HPD engine brake compensates
for this loss so that fleets can still haul standard load sizes
safely, the company said.

HOW THE HPD ENGINE BRAKE WORKS

HPD Valve Motions
HPD uses collapsing bridges to eliminate the main event

With HPD two-stroke braking, the CR event is the same for the first TDC timing, but the main intake and exhaust
valve events are deactivated using collapsing bridges, Jacobs said. This enables the buildup of pressure in the
cylinder at the second TDC event, which is released by a second CR event.

retarding power in small- and medium-displacement diesel and natural gas engines, the company said. The HPD
Engine brake also maximizes the performance of largedisplacement engines in applications requiring additional
retarding performance, Jacobs said.
As it is integrated with the engine, the company said the
brake is lighter than other secondary braking devices, such
as a hydraulic retarder, increasing a vehicles payload by
175 to 200 kg. Nonetheless, the brake only becomes driver-available when the cab-mounted engine brake switch is
on. A lever on the steering wheel controls its braking power,
which can be adjusted to any level, Jacobs said. The brake
engages automatically when the accelerator is released and
disengages when the pedal is pressed, the company said.
It is a compelling engine brake with excellent power,
which comes on quickly at low engine speed in line with the
industry trends towards downspeeding, Howell said.
According to Howell, Jacobs is currently targeting the
European market for the new brake, as it already has high
product uptake in North America. He said the company is
in talks with several commercial vehicle makers, and one
original equipment manufacturer (OEM), which he declined
to name, is going into production with the new brake later
this year. dpi

The HPD engine brake offers supplementary intake valve

motions and brake gas recirculation motions on the exhaust
to enable the cylinder to fill, allowing for maximum retarding
power, Jacobs said.
The increase in power is achieved without exceeding
any of the engine limits, such as cylinder pressure, as
there are twice as many engine-retarding events per cylinder with the two-stroke HPD retarding technology, the
company said.
Fleets and drivers are required to operate at the lower
engine speeds that are more conducive to fuel economy,
which are typically achieved at around 1200 to 1350 r/min,
according to Jacobs. The company said its HPD engine
brake suits lower engine speeds, as it achieves the same
retarding performance at 1400 r/min as previous-generation
engine brakes did at 2100 r/min.
The benefits of the HPD engine brake include a 100%
increase in braking power at cruise speeds over a conventional CR brake and an average return on investment of
six months, Jacobs said. The company also estimated an
approximate US$4000 lower total cost of ownership over
comparable retarder devices and increased foundation
brake life, truck uptime and higher resale values.
According to Jacobs, the HPD engine brake also realizes 1.5 times the braking performance of traditional compression release braking over the engines entire operating range and more than twice the braking performance at
lower engine speeds. This allows for large-displacement

road carriageways, JCB said it became clear that a new

and better solution could be achieved by rethinking machine design conventions.
Visibility from the cab was the main customer consideration because of on-site safety concerns, said Tim Burnhope,
chief innovation and growth officer for JCB. Stability was
next on the list, as machines are now being called upon
to do an increasing amount of heavy lifting, not just excavating. As job sites become tighter, many customers are
demanding improved maneuverability, while others need increased mobility to allow machines to move between sites
more quickly.
Finally, customers now expect excellent ground-level
serviceability. So our design challenge was to develop a
single machine solution that would deliver against all five
customer challenges.
Powered by a JCB Ecomax Stage 3b/Tier 4 interim engine

CB debuted its new Hydradig at the 2016 bauma

trade show. Described by JCB as a ground-breaking
digging, lifting, loading and tool-carrying machine for
urban construction, highway maintenance and municipal operations, the company said the Hydradig would radically change the way in which modern construction projects
are undertaken.
Labeled a new, innovative tool-carrying solution by JCB,
the aim of the machines three-year development project
was to design a piece of equipment having the best visibility, stability, maneuverability, mobility and serviceability,
the company said.
JCB said it conducted analysis of the Hydradigs target
applications, including utilities, highways, municipalities, general construction and landscaping, to assess the suitability
of current machinery solutions. With job sites becoming increasingly congested in both urban environments and on

and rear and the front axle offers 8 of
oscillation. The axles are teamed with a
stepless Bosch Rexroth hydrostatic transmission to provide full-time four-wheel
drive and Bosch Rexroth also supplied the
main hydraulic pumps and motors..
The JCB Ecomax engine has a wideopening steel canopy designed to provide ground-level access to the engine
and cooling pack. The machine also
comes with JCBs LiveLink telematics
system that allows fleet managers to
geofence operation as well as monitor
fuel use and operating data remotely, the company said.
With the engine, driveline, hydraulic and diesel tanks
mounted on the lower chassis, the upper structure has a
tail swing of 120 mm, which JCB said is 29% less than any
competitive machine, allowing the machine to work on confined construction sites or within a single carriageway.
The machine can be ordered with single tires, extrawide flotation tires or twin tires on each axle. Customers
can also choose between any combination of dozer
blades and stabilizer legs at either end of the machine,
providing a modular design that can be tailored to individual operation, JCB said. Both parallel lift and radial lift
dozers are available. The Hydradig can also be supplied
with a choice of towing hitches, connected to the chassis
or through the dozer blade, JCB said. Capable of pulling
up to 3.5 tonnes, the hitch comes complete with 12 Vdc
electrics, the company said.
Customers can choose between a monoboom or triplearticulating boom with three dipper lengths of 1650, 2000
and 2250 mm to suit a range of applications, JCB said. dpi

To meet the need for better stability, the JCB Hydradigs

rated 81 kW that incorporates a Honeywell turbocharger and

no diesel particulate filter (DPF), the Hydradigs driveline is
mounted in the lower chassis, which enabled JCB to create
an operators cab and structure with 360 visibility, as there
are no engine covers or fluid tanks to obstruct the view, the
company said. Additionally, because the side-mounted engine is no longer located in the upper bodywork, there is no

which also boosts operator visibility, JCB said.
To meet the need for better stability, the Hydradigs center of gravity was lowered by packaging the driveline and

Index (PSR-TPI) decreased from 105 to 96 or
8.6% for the three-month period ending March

The PSR-TPI measures truck production globally and

across six regions North America, China, Europe, South
America, Japan and Korea and the Emerging Markets
with the data coming from CV Link, a proprietary database
maintained by Power Systems Research.
Looking first at the North American market, medium and
heavy commercial truck production finished strong in 2015,
with Class 8 truck builds at 320 000 vehicles. This year, however, Class 8 truck builds are expected to decline by 25%,
primarily due to a decline in freight demand and freight rates
along with the highest used truck inventory in 15 years a
result of very strong new truck demand during the past few

Production in the South Asia region finished last year as

a mixed bag, depending on where one looked. Medium and
heavy truck production in India increased by 29% last year,
which was driven by an improved domestic economy and
original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) such as Daimler
transferring more of its export production into the country. On
the flip side, demand in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand
declined in 2015, primarily because of the collapse in global
commodity prices. This year, South Asia production is expected to improve by 9% as Indias recovery continues and
Indonesia and Malaysia stabilize.
Things were anything but stable in South America in 2015.
Led by Brazil and Argentina, medium and heavy truck pro-

years. While demand for medium trucks (Class 4 through 7)

is expected to be somewhat flat this year, this will still result
in a relatively strong year.
Demand for medium and heavy commercial trucks was
very strong in Western Europe last year, with production
increasing by 14.5% over 2014. Production this year is expected to be strong, with truck builds increasing by 3.2%
over 2015.
Production of medium and heavy trucks in Eastern Europe
was the complete opposite, with 2015 production declining
by 15.3% compared with 2014. It doesnt seem as if demand
is close to bottoming out, and production is expected to decline slightly this year before improving in 2017.

duction in South America declined by 43.6% last year and

is expected to decline another 14% this year. In Brazil, low
commodity prices, an economy in recession and very tight
financing requirements have all but shut down the commercial vehicle industry. PSR does not expect to see any
significant improvement until at least 2018.
Commercial truck demand in Argentina is also expected
to decline sharply as a result of a stagnant economy and
the implementation of Euro 5 emissions regulations in January, which added significant cost to new vehicles.
Medium and heavy truck demand in Japan and Korea
continued to be flat in 2015 and should remain at current
levels through the remainder of this year. In an effort to
stimulate the economy and encourage banks to lend, the
Bank of Japan implemented negative interest rates in
January. It appears that Japan is limited on other possible
stimulus schemes.
Another trend that is hurting production in Japan is that
OEMs are transferring vehicle production closer to their traditional export markets. Historically, the Japanese exported
approximately 70% of its domestic production.
In China, it appears that demand for medium and heavy
trucks may have bottomed out in 2015, but PSR does not
expect to see improvement until possibly later this year.
The economy is expected to remain plagued by significant
real estate and manufacturing overcapacity throughout the
forecast period. Until the Chinese economy improves, expect commodity prices to remain relatively low, which will
continually hinder global economic growth. dpi

northern Italy where it operates a biomethane tanking

CNH Industrial sees biomethane as clean fuel for farming machines, on-highway vehicles
BY ROBERTA PRANDI

placement. FPT Industrial reported that it produced 29 000

of these natural gas engines since 1996.
CNH Industrial said it sees an opportunity to help develop
a sustainable market in natural gas for mobile equipment
especially in biomethane, which is biogas produced from
municipal waste, manure and agricultural waste that is purified for use in mobile vehicles. All CNG-powered vehicles
on the market that are produced by the CNH Industrial
brands can be powered by biomethane, the company said.
Biomethane is a renewable source of energy, which can
be produced by a wide variety of biomasses and can also
be fed into the natural gas distribution grid. However, it is
particularly interesting for use in agricultural vehicles on
farms that produce their own fuel by transforming residue
and agricultural waste.
During the recent Biomethane Day event organized by
CNH Industrial and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles in collaboration with EGEA and Acea Pinerolese two Italian multiutilities operating at a national level in providing local public
services for environment and energy Michele Ziosi, CNH
Industrials director of Institutional Relations for Europe,
Africa, Middle East and Asia Pacific, said that biomethane
can help farms with reaching energy independence and improve their financial returns. The exploitation of biomethane
as a fuel can also have a beneficial impact on the creation

here is no doubt that CNH Industrial believes in

natural gas either in its compressed (CNG), liquefied (LNG) or renewable form (biomethane) as
the most effective and immediately available technology to counteract pollution problems in urban areas and
reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the transport
and agricultural sectors. According to the company, natural
gas stands as the only fuel with good prospects for widespread use in the short and medium term.
CNH Industrial said it has sold about 8500 Iveco-brand
trucks powered by natural gas including light-, mediumand heavy-duty vehicles and 5500 Iveco buses. In the
off-highway market, the companys Steyr brand presented
the first CNG-powered agricultural tractor prototype in 2011,
while New Holland Agriculture another brand of CNH Industrial launched its second-generation prototype of a
CNG-powered agricultural tractor in 2015.
According to the company, the natural-gas-powered vehicle market is backed by the knowledge and experience
of subsidiary FPT Industrial, which designs and manufactures a full range of natural gas industrial engines. The
engine range includes the light-duty F1C, a 3.0 L engine
rated 100 kW; the medium-duty NEF 6 engine with 5.9 L
displacement and a 150 kW rating; and the heavy-duty
Cursor 8 engine, which is rated 243 kW with a 7.8 L disDIESEL PROGRESS INTERNATIONAL

ALTERNATIVE FUEL
of new jobs and in the protection of
fields, he said.
The potential of biomethane in
Europe is considerable, Ziosi said.
Currently, 200 biomethane processing plants are present on the
EU territory. Germany is recognized
as the world leader for the potential
in purifying biogas into biomethane,
and Sweden has been promoting
since the early 90s the use of biomethane in vehicles.
Italy is the third producer worldwide of biogas from agricultural
mass with 2 billion m3 produced per
year, while the Netherlands opened
in 2015 the first biomethane station
on the highway.
In view of these developments
across Europe, New Holland Agriculture said it has launched the Energy
Independent Farm concept, which
utilizes self-produced biomethane
to power the New Holland secondgeneration T6 Methane Power prototype tractor.
With this concept, a farm would utilize biomass and residue from its agricultural production to feed its own plant
for the production of biogas, New Holland said. The biogas could then be utilized to generate electricity and heat
for the farms own use, while part of it could be specifically
filtered to obtain biomethane, the company said. Properly
compressed, the biomethane could be used to power the
farms agricultural vehicles or could be fed into the existing
natural gas grid, according to New Holland.
Biogas from anaerobic digestion usually contains 46%
methane. To be transformed into biomethane, it requires a
purifying process based on an activated carbon filter that extracts 40% of the CO2, CNH Industrial said. The resulting biomethane is richer in methane, with up to 95% content. At the
same time, the extracted CO2 is fed again into the biomass
digester to facilitate the digestion process, the company said.
According to CNH Industrial, the New Holland T6 Methane Power tractor is powered by an FPT Industrial engine
rated 132 kW with 740 Nm available torque. The machine
is fitted with nine tanks for compressed gas with a capacity
of 300 L equivalent to about 60 L of diesel fuel for a
working time of about half a day.
New Holland said that on biomethane produced under
the Energy Independent Farm concept, the T6 Methane
Power tractor could bring fuel cost savings from 20 to 40%,
depending on the price of agricultural diesel fuel. The tractor emits 80% less polluting exhaust than a standard diesel
vehicle, the company said.
DIESEL PROGRESS INTERNATIONAL

All compressed natural gas (CNG)-fueled

vehicles by CNH Industrial can be powered by biomethane, as well. These include Iveco buses and minibuses, Iveco
trucks and agricultural tractors by the
companys Steyr and New Holland Agriculture brands.

Ziosi said that there are 1500 plants in Italy for the production of biogas. This production, transformed into biomethane, could potentially fuel 2 million on-highway vehicles for a year, he said.
What is missing to transform these figures into practice?
Based on the experience in Italy, Ziosi said that it is fundamental to overcome all uncertainties on fiscal norms as
well as the official requirements to use the digested mass
resulting from biomethane production. It is also important
to simplify the administrative procedures to build infrastructures, both on farms as well as for on-highway use, he said.
Last but not least, Ziosi said it would be key to simplify
the certification process for the utilization of the digestion
process compost as soil conditioner. dpi

and telecommunications systems were also extended.

For commuting, reports said Rio de Janeiro had to modernize its traffic control, build new bridges, enlarge avenues
and implement an integrated transport system. The bus
rapid transit (BRT) Transcarioca will cover 39 km while the
Transolmpica BRT will be 26 km and the Transoeste BRT
59 km. The construction of the Transcarioca BRT alone reportedly generated 7000 jobs, demanded 270 000 m of
concrete and 21 000 tonnes of steel.
Rios airports, Aeroporto Internacional Tom Jobim
(Galeo) and Santos Dumont, were also improved. For
Galeo, reports said the investment reached US$600 million. For Santos Dumont the investment was US$17 million.
To be part of this scene, Hyundai Heavy Industries
opened a construction machinery plant in Rio de Janeiro in
2013. With an investment of US$120 million, the company
started manufacturing its 930 and 940 backhoes as well as
its excavators there.
With the Olympic Games, there is a great demand and
a great expectation of growth in the construction heavy machinery segment in Brazil, said Choe Byeong Ku, president
of Hyundai in Korea, when the plant was opened.

surround Rio de Janeiro, such as the Baixada Fluminense
thermal plant in Seropdica. Opened in February 2014, it
has two turbines that generate up to 530 MW of energy,
which is reportedly enough to supply a city of 1.7 million.
To supply more power to the Olympic Games and broadcast the event worldwide, GE said it made an agreement
with the organizational committee to supply a system that
includes more than 3000 uninterruptible power supply
units. The system works as a secondary energy source and
temporarily feeds connected devices until the generators
start, the company said. According to GE, this equipment is
typically used in critical applications that require a high level
of reliability, such as hospitals, airports and data centers.
At the Olympic Games, they will be installed in competition
sites and in broadcasting centers.

Sany supplied 30 machines for the construction of the Olympic Park, including
excavators and road rollers, such as this
SSRP120 model.

Sul state, supplied its Grove models for the expansion of

the metro in Rio de Janeiro. Recently, however, the plant
suspended its operations, citing depressing market conditions in the region as well as political, social and economic issues.
The number of tourists expected to visit Rio de Janeiro
motivated bus manufacturer Comil, Erechim city, Rio
Grande do Sul state, to open a plant in 2013 in So Paulo,
which is closer to Rio de Janeiro, the company said.
The characteristics of this plant make it ready to attend
the growth of demand for buses until 2016, boosted by the
World Cup and the Olympic Games, said Silvio Calegaro,
Comils CEO at the time. The facility received an investment of US$36 million.
Chinas Sany Group, which has a plant in So Jos dos
Campos city, So Paulo state, said it supplied 30 machines
for the construction of the Olympic Park, including excavators and road rollers. Ciber, part of the Wirtgen Group, said
its UACF 17 P2 asphalt plant is one of the machines working at the site. It has a capacity of producing 120 tonnes per
hour of stone matrix asphalt.
Approximately 30 Case Construction Equipment machines were rented through Rio Rental Locao. The
CX220 excavator and 580N backhoe were used at the
Olympic Park. In the backhoes line, for example, the 580N
has a high reliability in the market, said Jonas Martings,
commercial manager at Rio Rental. If the client already
knows Cases backhoes, he asks for another machine of
the same brand.
The Olympic Games will also significantly increase the
demand for power in the region. GE, one of the official
sponsors, said it would use the event to show off its efficiency. The Olympic Games give us a unique opportunity
to show the world our innovative technology applied to a
citys infrastructure, said Alfredo Mello, commercial leader
at GE.
The generator park will demand operational flexibility
and stability from the thermal plants installed in cities that

In December 2015, U.K.-based power generation supplier

Aggreko plc pulled out of a tender to provide generators to
the games. According to Aggreko, the contractors decided to
divide the pack of energy supply in different segments, and
the company was not part of the first contract. Given the
necessary preparation for such event, we pulled out from the
remaining process, the company stated.
We thought a lot about our decision of leaving the process, and we would like to thank our team for the work and
dedication, said Chris Weston, CEO of Aggreko. We wish
Brazil, Rio 2016s committee and the International Olympic

Marco Aurlio Rangel, FPT Industrials president in Latin
America, said that the recognition of Ivecos launches and
the history of delivering new technologies comes from the
flexibility FPT has had to develop and adapt its products
according to the clients necessities.

Volvo Bus Latin America has started tests with an articulated hybrid bus, the Hibriplus, in Curitiba city, Paran
state, Brazil. The tests will be made in real work cycles over
six months, the company said, and are a collaboration between Curitiba and Sweden for the sustainable development of the city.

Volvo Bus Latin America has started tests with an

articulated hybrid bus in Curitiba city, Paran state,
Brazil. The tests will be conducted over six months.

We have a long history of contribution in the public

transport development in the city, said Luis Carlos Pimenta, president, Volvo Bus Latin America. We keep our
commitment of bringing to Curitiba the most advanced urban transport that is aligned with the demands of pollution
