ThePalaceofNations(French:PalaisdesNations,pronounced:[paldensj
])inGeneva,
Switzerland,wasbuiltbetween1929and1938toserveastheheadquartersoftheLeagueofNations.
IthasservedasthehomeoftheUnitedNationsOfficeatGenevasince1946whentheSecretary
GeneraloftheUnitedNationssignedaHeadquartersAgreementwiththeSwissauthorities,although
SwitzerlanddidnotbecomeamemberoftheUNuntil2002.

Ajuryofarchitectswasselectedtochooseafinaldesignfromamongthreehundredandthirtysevenentriesbut
wasunabletodecideonawinner.Ultimately,thefivearchitectsbehindtheleadingentrieswerechosento
collaborateonafinaldesign:JulienFlegenheimerofSwitzerland,CamilleLefvreandHenriPaulNnotof
France,CarloBroggiofItalyandJzsefVgofHungary.DonationsfromLeaguememberswereusedinthe
interior.
AfteritstransfertotheUnitedNations,twoextensionswereaddedtothebuilding.Intheearly1950s,three
floorswereaddedtothe"K"building,andthe"D"buildingwasconstructedtohousetemporarilytheWorld
HealthOrganization.The"E"building(or"New"Building)wascompletedin1973asaconferencefacility.With
theadditions,thecomplexis600metreslong,with34conferenceroomsand2,800offices.

InDecember,1988,inordertohearYasserArafat,theUnitedNationsGeneralAssemblymovedits29thsessionfromtheUnitedNationsHeadquarters
inNewYorktothePalaceofNations.[2]

Description
ThePalaceislocatedinArianaPark,whichwasbequeathedtotheCityofGenevain1890byGustavede
RevillioddelaRive,onthreeconditions:thattheparkalwaysremainaccessibletothepublic,thathebeburied
inthepark,andthatpeacocksroamfreelyonitsgrounds,whichtheydotothisday.Theparkalsocontainsa
1668chalet.
BeneaththePalaceofNations'sfoundationstoneisatimecapsulecontainingadocumentlistingthenamesofthe
LeagueofNationsmemberstates,acopyoftheCovenantoftheLeague,andspecimencoinsofallthecountries
representedattheleague'sTenthAssembly.AmedalshowingthePalaceofNationswiththeJuraMountainsin
thebackgroundwasstruckinsilveredbronze.[3]
ThebuildingoverlooksLakeGenevaandhasaclearviewoftheFrenchAlps.
