Have you ever stopped and wondered, What does my name mean? This question has
been asked amongst many out of curiosity. After much research I can say I have gathered
numerous information regarding my name, the origin, and why my parents decided to name me,
Jaylaan Nicole Bennett.
I spoke with my mom this past weekend and I asked her, Why is my name Jaylaan
Nicole Bennett? My mom was very confused as to why I would ask this question, but she
answered, Your dad wanted to name you Jada or Jayla but I did not like those names because
they were too common. I went and looked in a baby name book and came across Jaylaan and
loved the name. I researched the name and discovered not many parents spell Jaylaan the way I
wanted to spell it. And, well your middle name, came from your aunt because one of her
daughters middle name was Nicole. I was surprised at how much thought my mom put into
naming me.
After looking up the meaning of the name Jaylaan I discovered many different
meanings. Name List provided me with the response that my name meant, Mighty Spearman.
Very confused as to what a spearman is I looked it up to find a spearman is a soldier who carries
a spear. The next thing I came across was an entry about my name on the Kabalarian Philosophy
website. The philosophers stated, You strive to be different and have the self-confidence to
implement your ideas because you have the perseverance necessary to see something through,

despite obstacles. This statement about me is very accurate as to who I am as an individual. I
always strive to be different and I never take on a challenge I feel I cannot handle.
My last name opened the door for many things I did not know about my family and
where my family could be from. Ancestry.com provided me with information as to where
Bennett comes from. They stated, In the 12th century the Latin form of the name is found in
England alongside versions derived from the Old French form Beneit, Benoit, which was
common among the Normans. This information has me wondering, could my ancestors be from
England? Then I realized because I have my dads last name, this information was correct. My
dads side of the family originated from England.
Discovering all this information about my name, helped me have more assurance in my
self-identity. Our names are what others will remember along with how we treat them. One must
remember their name sits alongside their reputation, and thats all he or she has to make it in this
world. Like Proverb stated, Tigers die and leave their skins; people die and leave their names.
