MAGNETISM AND ELECTROMAGNETISM

1.

The force between two magnets is 0.006N when they are 50 cm apart. The pole strength of one magnet is six times the pole
strength of the other magnet. Find the pole strength of each magnet.

2.

An N- pole of 100 A-m pole strength and an S-pole with 40 A-m pole strength are 40 cm apart. Determine the magnetic
induction midway between the two magnets.

3.

A solenoid with air core has a magnetic induction of 0.08Weber/m 2 at its center when a current of 40A flows through the wires
having 500 turns. How long is the solenoid?

4.

Using Amperes or Bio-Savarts Law (by integral calculus), determine the net magnetic
induction at point P in the field of a current loop with I = 10 A. Wires a & b are quarter
circular loop with a = 20 cm and b = 40 cm

5.

A long straight wire carries a current of 10A. An electron travels with a velocity of 4x106
cm/sec parallel to the wire, 10 cm from it and in the same direction as the current. What
force does the magnetic field of the current exert on the moving electron? Find the
magnetic induction along the path of electron.
6.

7.

A circular coil of 100 turns has a radius of 0.2m and carries a current of 10A. The coil is in a field where the magnetic induction
is 0.85 W/m2. What is the max torque on the coil?
Three parallel straight wires are carrying current and arranged as shown. I 1 &
I2 are 4 cm apart while I1 & I3 are separated by 3 cm. What is the net
magnetic induction at the center of wire I1? What is the magnitude and
direction of the resultant magnetic force per unit length on wire I1 ?
8. Two wires (see Figure 2 ) are parallel to the z-axis and are carrying
currents of I1 = 20.0 A in the _z direction and I 2 = 40.0 A in the z
direction. Wire 1 is located at (0cm, 20 cm) and wire 2 is located at (40cm,
20 cm).Find the strength of magnetic field midway between the
wires.If a third wire, parallel to the first two and carrying a current of 10.0
A in the z direction, is located at (30cm, 20cm), find the magnitude and
direction of the magnetic force per unit length on it due to the first two
wires.

9.

I3 = 6 A

I1 = 20 A

I2 = 10 A

A straight horizontal rod carries a current of 40 A from west to east in a

region between the poles of a large magnet. In this region, there is a
magnetic field in the direction 45 o NE with a magnitude of 1.5 Tesla. Find
the magnitude and direction of the force on a 2.5 m length of the rod.

10. A rectangular wire loop in Figure F has a weight of 0.2 N/ cm of length.

When a uniform magnetic field parallel to yz plane of 0.05 tesla is applied to
the loop, it swings up so that its plane makes an angle of 30o with the yz
plane. Find the (a). torque due to the weight of the loop, and (b) current in
the loop.
