WhenconstructionbeganontheprivateislanduponwhichBurjAlArabwouldbebuilt,Dubaiwasaverydifferentplace.Inthelate1990s,therapidpaceofconstruction
whichdevelopedoneoftheworldsmostimpressiveskylineswasjustinitsveryearlystages,andassuch,theBurjAlArabisregardedasoneofthefirstkeylandmarksof
modernDubai.Whenopenedin1999,BurjAlArabwasadvertisedastheworldsfirstandonly7starhotel,offeringaluxuryexperiencethatwastrulyunique.
InspiredbytheshapeofasailboatabouttoheadintothePersianGulf,thetriangularshapedbuildingsdesignbeganwithintenttocreatearecognizablelandmarkforthe
emergingcity.Uponcompletion,BurjAlArabwastheworldstallesthotelandincludedtheworldstallestatriumwhichrises182metersthroughtheinteriorofthebuilding.
Theatriumisalignedtothebuildingssouthernexposureandisseparatedfromtheoutsidebyaglassfiberscreenattachedtothebuildingthroughanetworkofsteelcables.
Thescreenreducessolarheatgainthroughtheeliminationofwindowswhilestillallowingfordiffusedlighttoentertheatriumspace.Thescreenisdesignedtoflexwiththe
windloadsofthebuildingscoastallocationandiscoatedwithTeflon,anonstickcoatingoftenusedinkitchenwarewhichpreventsdustanddirtfromadheringtothescreen
inthedesertenvironmentwherewindblownsandiscommon.
Theguestroomsarealignedinawedgeformationflankingtheatriumandfacingoutintothegulf,while9restaurantsandloungesarespreadthroughoutthestructure,
includingontheuppermostfloor.Themainrooflineincludesahelipadwhichcanguestsmayusetotraveltoandfromthebuilding.TheoccupiablespaceofBurjAlArabisset
withinanexternalstructuralsystembuiltwithinacompositeframeandincludessixlargediagonalsteeltrusses,eachoneaslongasafootballfield.Becauseofthelocation
positionedintothegulf,thefoundationisonlymadeupoffrictionpilesextending45metersintothesandbelowtheisland,incontrasttobedrockwhichoftenanchorssupertall
buildings.
Inearly2016,theprivateislandwasexpanded10,000squaremetersinsizethroughtheuseofasteeldeckattachedtopilesdrivenintotheseabed.Thenorthwardextension
wasbuiltinmodularformusingsixindividualpiecesconstructedinFinlandandsentbyship8,000nauticalmilestotheBurjAlArab.
AsDubaihascontinuedtobuilduparoundtheBurjAlArab,ithaslostitstitleofworldstallesthotelmultipletimestonearbytowers.AstheskylinecontinuestoexpandBurjAl
ArabwillremainakeylandmarkthatwillnotonlybeintrinsicallypartofDubaisworldimage,butitwillalsoserveareminderofthetransitionerawhenDubaiemergedinto
thecityitistoday.
