CSI test for primary pupils

Gifted and Talented Year 5 students from Overleigh St Mary’s CE Primary School, Lache
Primary School and St Thomas of Canterbury Junior School visited Queen’s Park High School
for a master class in Maths and Science. The theme for the day was ‘Forensic Science’.
The master class was planned and delivered by Miss Batt and Mrs Sullivan, specialist teachers
from Queen’s Park High School. The students where asked to investigate who had kidnapped
Homer Simpson. They carried out forensic practical tests including taking fingerprints and
analysing soil and fibre samples. In teams they had to build up a solid case against one suspect.
Students also had to use their mathematical skills to analyse other pieces of evidence and carry
out calculations.
The students worked hard and were very enthusiastic. Both staff and students enjoyed the day.
Miss Davis, Coordinator for Primary Liaison at Queen’s Park High School said: “We were really
impressed at how the Year 5 students applied themselves to solve some difficult problems. It was
really enjoyable for us to work with students who were so enthusiastic and it gave the students
an opportunity to use specialist equipment to enhance their learning”

Litter pickers’ success

A four hour litter pick in Chester along one of the banks of the River Dee between
Grosvenor Bridge and Edgar’s Field Park resulted in 30 bags of litter.
Other objects collected included metal fencing, road signs, a bicycle, a suitcase, a car
wheel and a tyre.
The event was organised by Cheshire West and Chester
Council’s Streetscene in partnership with Volunteer Centre
Chester.
Rupert Adams, Regulatory Services Manager, who is project
managing work around the River Dee in Chester, said: “The
litter pick was extremely successful and the team which
carried out the work involved a Streetscene Officer and
three volunteers and a staff member from Chester Aid to the
Homeless.
“It was a thorough and very successful litter pick and I would
like to congratulate everyone who took part.”
Clare Harrison from Volunteer Centre Chester said: “These
opportunities are a great way in which to involve volunteers
from organisations such as Chester Aid to the Homeless who
may not otherwise engage in volunteering due to their housing
situation; all of the volunteers worked hard and really enjoyed
the event.”

Karate

the grade
DAVID Moss has proved that age is no
obstacle to sporting success.
The 64-year-old may be a veteran in sporting Noel Parsons and David Moss proudly
terms but he has rolled back the years to achieve a display their signed licence books after
prestigious black belt in karate. the 3 hour grading
David attends the Handbridge Shotokan Karate
Club, which meets at Queen’s Park High School. He and his younger colleague Noel Parsons
were among 150 brown belts who were attempting to take the step up to black belt at the Karate
Union of Great Britain (KUGB) grading recently.
David, a builder and plasterer, began karate training in 1972 but had to give up due to work and
family commitments four years later.
He resumed training in 2000 after a 24-year break just to keep fit. Club instructors Mike
O’Connor and Syd Fisher had been telling him for years that he should attempt his black belt.
So David decided to do it for the granddads!
He said: “The training at Handbridge is at such a high level that you think you’re not so good
untill you attend these Black and Brown belt classes and realise 6th Dan tuition does prepare you
so well. and that you’ve improved far beyond your dreams” “I am normally working Saturdays but
I thought just this once “
“That’s not to say the grading was easy - anything but - what I am saying that your dojo training
shows when the pressure is on. In the fighting stage I fought a man in his early 50’s and he was
impressed and strongly congratulated me afterwards which again was very nice.”
Noel Parsons, a chef, at 32, returned to the sport in 2007 after a six-year hiatus and fought to
get back to fitness.
he said: “I know what David means when he says you dont realise the standard that a senior
class gives you but it would be like a normal footballer playing with a premier team - without
realising it that level pulls you up.
“At Handbridge you are just one of the class all training at a level of one of the KUGB’s highly
respected 6th Dans. When you come on the National Black and Brown Belt Course there are
hundreds from all levels of instruction. Some are very good but we felt we were up there and
once complicated moves were introduced we were in our element.”
Both Mike and Syd, from Handbridge, were very proud of the effort put in and congratulated all
who passed so convincingly.
The club meets Mondays and Thursdays at the Gym, in Queen’s Park High School, from
7-8.30pm. Visit HSKC.org.uk for more info.

Women needed for driving challenge

WOMEN drivers are often much maligned but the Chester Lions Club is aiming to put
those prejudices to bed with a Ladies’ Driving Challenge this month.
The event takes place at Poulton Airfield, on the Eaton Park Estate,
on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th June.
The challenge is for women to drive as many unusual vehicles as
possible during the day. There will be a double decker bus, HGV
lorry, fire engine, ambulance, police car, mini digger, quad bike,
limousine and a tractor available.

Handbridge’s Mosley becomes city’s MP

HANDBRIDGE resident and former councillor for Overleigh Stephen Mosley
is Chester’s new MP.
Conservative candidate Mr Mosley ousted Labour’s Christine Russell by
2,500 votes.
Mr Mosley said he was elated about becoming an MP but that Chester had
been ‘neglected over the last 13 years’.

Q. My lips are quite thin and I am noticing that as I am getting

older they are getting thinner. Is there anything I can do to
make them look fuller?
A. As we age we lose fatty tissue from the lips making them
look thinner. The most effective method of restoring their
fullness is with dermal filler injections. Small, temporary
injections of hylauronic acid which are administered to
the vermilion border of the lips (the juncture between the
lighter skin and the redder tissue of the lip) to give a natural
plumpness without giving the dreaded ‘trout pout’ as
demonstrated by Leslie Ash.

If injections are not for you, then try

micropigmentation lip blush. A soft line of colour is
tattooed around the lip area giving the impression
of a fuller, more defined lip line.
There are also some great make-up tips for you to
try. Use lighter shades of lipstick with high shine
to reflect light and give the illusion fullness. Also

HARVESTING YOUR WEALTH
Financial column with Simon Dangar

Running a busy estate or farm is a demanding, time-consuming challenge. And estate owners
and farmers are invariably so busy working in their business that they have too little time to
spend actually working on it.
In some ways, the financial situations of farmers and estate owners are unique because they spend
most of their lives investing their earnings back into the farm or estate. But it is always wise to diversify
any wealth that has been harvested, and there are a number of financial planning opportunities which
can be pursued.
Probably the most important is estate planning, in particular taking into account a person’s likely
exposure to Inheritance Tax (IHT). And there is no time like the present for dealing with this, as
increasing numbers of people are being drawn into the IHT net.
With IHT running at 40%, it is essential to pursue some of the legal ways available to ensure as much
of your estate as possible passes to your chosen beneficiaries and stays away from the grasp of Her
Majesty’s Revenue & Customs (HMRC).
In doing so, three decisive steps have to be taken. Firstly, a Will should be drawn up, carefully planned
to save the maximum amount of tax. Secondly, assets should be transferred through the shrewd use
of gifts. And finally, an IHT-efficient fund needs to be set up to help beneficiaries to meet the tax liability
without having to disturb the family wealth built up on the estate or farm.
All these are important considerations in retirement and estate planning for farmers and landowners.
So are Asset Preservation Trusts, which can protect death benefits from IHT on the death of a surviving
spouse. They can also make sure death benefits are not assessed as capital of the surviving spouse if
he or she needs long term care, and can guarantee that death benefits go to the children rather than a
spouse’s new husband or wife if he or she remarries.
Long term care is another area that needs early attention. Estate owners and farmers are no different
from other people – many of us are now living longer, and therefore more people than ever before will
require nursing or residential care in their later years, a prospect that is causing increasing concern.
Most people are largely unfamiliar with the costs and issues involved. But under current local authority
means tests, those with assets of more than £23,250 (2010/11) are given no help at all with care costs.
And with figures showing that it costs more to keep someone in an average care home for a year than
the annual fees to send a child to Eton, planning for long term care is essential.
Farmers and estate owners are key people in their businesses, responsible for making them work
successfully and creating the wealth. Without them at the helm, a lifetime’s work could be lost if not
properly protected. Key person protection plans can provide death and disability protection, while
critical illness plans cover against a whole range of serious medical conditions.
Then there is the question of sale or succession of the farm or estate. All business owners should
have exit strategy plans, allowing them to leave in the most efficient way possible and with the
maximum cash in hand after taxation. Whether you sell your business or not, having a plan in place
gives confidence to your colleagues and family, as well as your bank.
