PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)

Definition
PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) like
gloves, foot and eye protection, protective hearing
devices (i.e. earplugs and muffs), hard hats,
respirators and full body suits are worn by
employees to minimize exposure to different
forms of hazards like sharp edges, falling edges,
flying sparks, tools, and other form of dangerous
situations.

Managing and elimination of hazards as much as

possible is the best and first way to protect
yourself.
This can be achieved through safety engineering
and practicing workplace safety.
One method of safety engineering and the
practice of workplace safety is through hazard
assessment.
Hazard assessment is the process identifying both
the physical and health hazards that are present
in the workplace.
Through hazard assessment, propertypes of
personal protective equipment to be used can
be determined more efficiently.
Re-assessment of the workplace should be done
on a regular basis to check if there are any
changes in conditions that could lead to new

hazards being identified.
PPEs are used as the last line of defense against
any forms of hazards.

training
Employee should receive a minimum training
requirements and should know at least why PPE is
necessary, when PPE is necessary, what PPE is
suitable for the work at hand, how to properly use
a PPE, the limitation in terms of providing safety
of a certain PPE, and the proper care
,maintenance, useful life and disposal of PPE.
Knowing why a PPE is necessary is the most
important training an employee can get, because
as study shows , employees dont follow rules
because they dont know why the rules are
important.
Thats why training how to use a PPE must come
in conjunction why to use PPE.
In the case that the employees provide their own
PPEs, the employer must ensure that it is
adequate to protect his employees from hazards
in the workplace

made a survey and found out that many of the
1,000 minor eye injuries are on-the-job accidents
which commonly cause by
Not wearing eye protection.
Wearing the wrong kind of eye protection for
the job
Flying particles
Contact with chemicals
Accidents can be found in nearly every industry,
but according to BLS, more than 40% of injuries
occurred among craft workers, like mechanics,
repairers, carpenters, and plumbers.
More than a third of the injured workers were
operatives, such as assemblers, sanders, and
grinding machine operators.
Laborers suffered about one-fifth of the eye
injuries. Almost half the injured workers were
employed in manufacturing; slightly more than
20% were in construction.
How to prevent Eye Injuries?
Always wear effective eye protection

Different types of Face/Eye protectors

Glasses
Protective
eyeglasses are
made with
safety frames,
tempered glass or plastic lenses, temples and side
shields.
Itprovide eye protection from moderate impact
and particles encountered in job tasks such as
carpentry, woodworking, grinding, scaling, etc.
Safety glasses are also available in prescription
form for those persons who need corrective
lenses.

Goggles
Vinyl framed
goggles of soft
pliable body
design provide
adequate eye
protection from
many hazards.
Single lens goggles provide similar protection to
spectacles and may be worn in combination with
spectacles or corrective lenses to ensure
protection along with proper vision.
Welders goggles provide protection from
sparking, scaling, or splashing metals and harmful
light rays. Lenses are impact resistant and are
available in graduated shades of filtration.
Chipper/Grinder goggles provide eye protection
from flying particles. The dual protective eye cups

Face shields will be used in operations when the
entire face needs protection

Welding Shields
These shields will be
provided to protect
workers eyes and
face from infrared or
radiant light burns,
flying sparks, metal
spatter, and slag
chips.

Respiratory Protection
There are many
medical
conditions that
results when
workers
breathe
contaminated
air.
Protecting
workers can be
difficult, because there are so many types of
contaminants and there is no single method for
controlling them in all workplaces.
There are many ways that workers can be
protected from these hazards such as;
Elimination of the hazard or substitution of the
hazardous substance with a less hazardous.
Designing or redesigning equipment and
machinery if elimination and substitution is not
possible
A written respiratory protection program that is
administered by a qualified personnel must be
develop and implement. The program should
describe
selecting appropriate respirators for
employees;
conducting medical evaluations for
employees who use respirators;
how to fit-test employees who use tightfitting respirators;

WhatIsPPE(PersonalProtectiveEquipment)?ThePMHQ

ensure employees use respirators correctly

during regular activities and during
emergencies;
How to ensure respirators are clean and
properly maintained;
How to ensure air-quality in atmospheresupplying respirators;
How to train employees to protect
themselves from respiratory hazards; and
How to evaluate your programs
effectiveness.
A regular inspection must be conducted to the
respirators to ensure that it is properly
maintained.
The employee who will used respirators must
undergo medical evaluation and fit tested before
assigning him or a job that required such usage.

Head, Hand and Foot Protection

Protective Helmets
Protective
helmets
protects
employees
from falling
objects and
electrical
hazards
especially when
employees works near exposed electrical
conductors (for this case, a protective helmet that
designed to reduce shock hazards must be worn.

Two types of protective helmets

9/18

1/1/2016

WhatIsPPE(PersonalProtectiveEquipment)?ThePMHQ

Two types of protective helmets

Impact Type Helmets

Type I: Designed to provide protection only

to the top of the head. It is not intended to
provide impact from side impacts. (This is by
far the most commonly used type of hard
hat in use.)
Type II: Designed to provide protection
against both top and side impacts.
Electrical Classes

Class G (General): Intended to reduce the danger

of contact exposure to low voltage conductors.
Test samples are proof tested at 2200 volts (phase
to ground).
However, this voltage is not intended as an
indication of the voltage at which the helmet
protects the wearer.
Class E (Electrical): Class E helmets are
intended to reduce the danger of exposure
to high voltage conductors. Test samples are
proof-tested at 20,000 volts (phase to
ground). However, this voltage is not
intended as an indication of the voltage at
which the helmet protects the wearer.
Class C (Conductive): Class C helmets are not
intended to provide protection against
contact with electrical conductors.
Bump Caps

Bump caps/skull guards should be issued and

worn for protection against scalp lacerations from
contact with sharp objects.
But, its very important to understand that they
must not be worn as substitutes for safety

caps/hats because they do not provide protection

from impact forces or penetration by falling
objects.

Hand Protection
Jobs that involves
chemicals and potential
to injure hands required
the use of hand
protections.
One size fits all doesnt
apply to gloves thats
why it is necessary to
select the most
appropriate glove for a
particular job and how
long they can be worn or whether they are
reusable.
Most accidents involving hands and arms can be
falls under four main hazard categories:
chemicals, abrasions, cutting, and heat. There are
gloves available that can protect workers from
any of these individual hazards or any
combination thereof.
Gloves should be worn whenever it is necessary
to handle rough or sharp-edged objects, and very
hot or very cold materials.
Gloves doesnt provide enough protection when
working with hand tools, so it should be ensure
that guards is always in place and use.
When repairing a machine or tools, it should be
disconnected to the power source first, and a lock
out is initiated.
Gloves should not be used when working around
moving machinery or parts.

Foot protection

http://www.theprojectmanagementhq.com/whatisppe/

11/18

1/1/2016

WhatIsPPE(PersonalProtectiveEquipment)?ThePMHQ

Foot protection
Foot protection
must be used
when the
employee is
working in an
area when
there are
hazards that
could
potentially
cause foot
injuries like falling or rolling object, objects
piercing the sole and electrical hazards to the feet.
There are different types of Foot protection such
as Steel-Reinforced Safety Shoes that are
designed to protect the feet from common
machinery hazards.
It is also designed to insulate against temperature
extremes and may be equipped with special soles
to guard against slips, chemicals, and/or electrical
hazards.
The Safety Boots which offer more protection
when splash or spark hazards (chemicals, molten
materials) are present.
Safety shoes or boots with impact protection
would be required for carrying or handling
materials such as packages, objects, parts or
heavy tools, which could be dropped; and, for
other activities where objects might fall onto the
feet.
Safety shoes or boots with compression
protection would be required for work activities
involving skid trucks (manual material handling
carts) around bulk rolls (such as paper rolls) and

around heavy pipes, all of which could potentially

roll over an employees feet.
Safety shoes or boots with puncture
protection would be required where sharp
objects such as nails, wire, tacks, screws, large
staples, scrap metal etc., could be stepped on by
employees causing a foot injury.
Dos and Donts of PPEs
Dont use rings, wristwatches, earrings,
bracelets, and other jewelry if possible, as it
may come into contact with power driven
machinery or electric circuitry.
Dont treat back belts as a PPE, but as a
reminder of proper lifting technique.
Use work clothing that is appropriate for the
work you will going to perform and current
conditions.
Dont wearloose sleeves, ties, lapels, cuffs, or
other loose clothing if you will be working
near moving machinery.
Dont use damage or defective equipment,
inspect your PPE regularly and before you
use them.
