Welcome to Discovery High School Prep and the Physical Education Department. We hope
that your experiences here will be motivating and rewarding. We believe that all students can
successfully complete physical education requirements and enjoy the curriculum.
Objectives: The aim of physical education at Discovery Charter is to develop each student physically,
mentally, emotionally, and socially through the medium of motor activities and related experiences.
Curriculum objectives focus on physical fitness and motor skill development in athletic, rhythmic, and
recreational activities. Related learning encompasses knowledge of the human body, safety and etiquette,
strategies, rules, and the value of lifelong participation in motor activities for their physiological and
psychological advantages.

Course Curriculum: Our program is organized into units from two to four weeks in length. They
are offered at two levels; one for 5th-6th grades and one for 7th-8th grades. In both levels, students will
be combined co-educationally by periods. The 5th-6th grade students will be enrolled in a variety of
classes emphasizing fitness, teamwork, and an introductory level of instruction. The 7 th-8th grade
classes will emphasize a higher level of skill development, unit tests, and personal fitness planning.
Student Expectations and Responsibilities:
1. All facilities and equipment are furnished by the school district for students use and
enjoyment. However, students are only allowed entry into a facility or office with teacher
permission and supervision. Only proper athletic footwear is allowed on all gymnasium and
PE facility floors. Students who damage facilities and equipment through misuse or abuse
will be responsible for the cost of repair or replacement. Students are to refrain from
climbing fences, backstops, goals, lockers, etc.
2. Students are required to dress appropriately for physical education every day. The following
are the required items for physical education:
a. Master Lock combination lock
b. Athletic shoes of any color
c. Socks (extra pairs are to be kept in the locker for inclement weather)
d. Discovery Tigers t-shirt and shorts marked with students last name and first initial.
e. Discovery PE Uniform can be purchased in the teachers office throughout the school
year.
f. You may also purchase your own PE clothes, but they must be gray, maroon, or
gold/yellow.
3. Students are expected to complete all class responsibilities and required work on time.
4. Cooperation with teachers and other students, and compliance with instructions from all
members of the PE staff is expected at all times.
5. Students must be responsible for the cleaning, repair, and locker storage of their PE clothes
and belongings. Locking storage lockers and keeping locker room areas clean are students
responsibilities.

6. Respect for others property, school facilities, and equipment are absolutely
necessary.
7. Restroom needs must be taken care of before dressing out for class or after
class.
8. Students must be responsible for all medical excuses, notes and absence
admits.
Class Rules/Procedures: Students are to begin their assigned warm-ups once dismissed from the
locker room. Students will be given 3-5 minutes to dress out, use restrooms and report to their
assigned areas. Late students must report to their teachers with a pass or absence admits. All back
packs, binders, and agendas are to be left in the students previous class and cannot be brought to the
assigned PE areas. Do not bring large amounts of money, valuables, or electronic devices to class.
They will be confiscated and turned in to the front office. Locker rooms are not always supervised
during class periods, but by taking precautionary measures you can help to prevent theft of your
personal belongings. After teachers dismiss classes to the locker rooms five minutes before the end of
the period, students must remain in the assigned area until the supervising teacher dismisses students
to their destination.
Medical Excuses and Injuries: Any injury, regardless of how minor, is to be reported immediately
to the teacher. A parent note for illness or medical problems is valid for a maximum of three days.
Medical excuses are given consideration as an excused absence and may be made up for credit. A
physicians note excuses a student from specific participation as prescribed. This must be given to the
teacher who will instruct the student in what will be expected from him/her during the time of the
medical excuse. Please limit absences, as it is difficult to make up skill tasks learned during class time
in a cooperative environment.
Den Points: Students will be rewarded and deducted den points based on the same criteria as in the
classroom. They will also be deducted den points (-5) for not dressing out for class.
Grading and Credit for PE:
Participation & Behavior: This area includes active involvement in activities, sportspersonship,
responsibility, respect, and compliance with all school and department rules, while achieving learning
objectives.
Skills: This area deals with teacher observation of skills performed through skill tests, task sheets and
demonstrative comprehension, and will be based on the process in which each skill is performed.
Written work: This area deals with written assignments to be done as assigned by the teacher, such as
projects, quizzes, and tests. A written test will be given at the end of each unit, covering rules, history,
techniques, strategy, and general information about each class.
Students are expected to be able to:

Standard 1: Demonstrate competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to

perform a variety of physical activities.
Standard 2: Demonstrate understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and
tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.
Standard 3: Participate regularly in physical activity.
