II. High School Chemistry Overview. The Chemistry curriculum is designed to continue
student investigations of the physical sciences that began in grades K-8 and provide
students the necessary skills to be proficient in chemistry. This curriculum includes
more abstract concepts such as the structure of atoms, structure and properties of
matter, and the conservation and interaction of energy and matter. Students
investigate chemistry concepts through experience in laboratories and field work
using the processes of inquiry. During the course there is a focus on the international
ramifications of scientific knowledge and protocols. The MYP Chemistry program
places a strong emphasis on laboratory work and it is intended that the majority of
topics studied during the program will have associated practical work.
Middle Years Program

IBMYP- Middle Years Programme

This course is part of the International Baccalaureate Middle
Years Programme at North Atlanta High School which aims to help
IBMYP learners to become inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers,
communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced,
and reflective. The learning experiences will allow students to gain
analytical skills to promote informed decision-making, engage in
teamwork and collaboration, frame their own inquiries, pursue
personal aspirations, set challenging goals and have persistence to
achieve them. Students will work towards a deepening of their
conceptual understanding as they approach concepts from a range of
perspectives. As concepts are studied throughout the year, the
following global contexts will be in constant consideration: identities
and relationships, orientation in time and space, fairness and
development, globalization and sustainability, scientific and technical
innovation, and personal and cultural expression. IBMYP Assessments
aim to support and courage student learning by providing feedback
and promoting deep understanding of subject content by supporting

North Atlanta High School

students in their inquiry in real-world contexts. Specific assessment
criteria with subject objectives will be provided. A year-long IBMYP
personal project accompanied by a journal is to be produced at the
end of the 10th grade year. The personal project enables students to
engage in practical exploration through a cycle of inquiry, action, and
reflection. Timelines and descriptions of tasks will be provided.

III. Materials :
The following supplies are required to be brought to class every day:
Lab notebook
3 ring binder with 5 dividers

C. Late work: Due to the nature of the class, excessive absences may
seriously affect performance in class and jeopardize your chances of
successfully passing the class. It is your responsibility to make up work and
turn it in when you are absent from class. Requests for missed assignments
will only be considered before and/or after school. Students are expected to
carefully review printed grade reports.
D. APS Grading Policy:

The APS Board Policy Administrative Regulation IHA-R(1) was revised in

October of 2014. The policy addresses a variety of areas including, but not
limited to, grading practices, grade reporting, and students in danger of
not meeting academic expectations. The revised regulation places a
greater emphasis on mastery grading, including allowing students an
opportunity to re-assess when they have not achieved content mastery.
The entire policy can be found on the APS website under Board Policy
Manual.
Writing across the Curriculum:

North Atlanta High School

The Common Core Standards for high school students emphasize writing in all
subject areas. Students will learn the writing process, how to research and use
APA/MLA citations. Required writing products will include expository, descriptive,
persuasive, and narrative text. Published writing samples will be collected for
portfolios.
VI. Bathroom Passes:
Students will not be allowed to go to the bathroom the first or last 15 minutes of
class. Passes will be distributed sparingly and only when necessary. Exceptions will
be made for students with health related issues.

VII. Classroom Expectations/Rules - APS and North Atlanta High School rules will
be implemented. Please refer to Student Handbook. Specifically there will be zero
tolerance for eating/drinking or use of electronic devices in the classroom (including
cell phones, Ipods, headphones, etc.)
Adherence to the following guidelines will insure a safe and enjoyable year
for everyone:

FINALLY- Chemistry is challenging, but you can succeed in this class if you
follow these key steps:
Have confidence in your skills and your abilities. Be determined and
dont give up! You may not get it the first time, but try, try and keep
trying again!
Keep up with your assignments. Ask your classmates or even
previous Chemistry students if you need help esp. after an absence
and avoid missing class whenever possible. Check the website as
often as possible because it will contain information you may have
missed in class. Falling behind is the kiss of death!
Ask for help early and often. Whether that means asking a question
during class or coming in for tutoring, I am here to help you.
Take advantage of opportunities to boost your grade corrections,
retests, and extra credit, etc.

I, ___________________________________________________ have read and understand the

policies and procedures pertaining to my Chemistry class. I agree to adhere to the
policies and procedures outlined in this syllabus.
