LAUNCH OF SKILL INDIA

To make India a skilled country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched four initiatives as a
part of which over 40 crore people will be trained in various skills by 2022.The initiatives
launched include National Skill Development Mission, National Policy for Skill Development
and Entrepreneurship 2015, Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana(PMKVY) scheme and the
Skill Loan scheme. The initiatives were launched to mark the first-ever World Youth Skills Day,
where the government set a target of skilling 40.02 crore people by 2022.At the event, Modi also
unveiled the Skill India logo with the tagline -- 'Kaushal Bharat, Kushal Bharat'.

INTRODUCTION OF SKILL INDIA

The dream project of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, called Skill India, is supposed to be a
multi-skill programme. The main goal is to create opportunities, space and scope for the
development of the talents of the Indian youth and to develop more of those sectors which have
already been put under skill development for the last so many years and also to identify new
sectors for skill development. The new programme aims at providing training and skill
development to 400 million youth of our country by 2022, covering each and every village.
Various schemes are also proposed to achieve this objective.

NEED OF SKILL INDIA

India is one of the few countries all across the world whose working age population will be very
high, few years down the line, going by its ever-increasing growth of population, as per the
World Bank. For a country that adds 12 million people to its workforce every year, less than 4
per cent have ever received any formal training. Our workforce readiness is one of the lowest in
the world and a large chunk of existing training infrastructure is irrelevant to industry
needs.Keeping this in mind, to contend this problem Skill India is launched.

How It Is Different From Other Skill Developement Policies

Its not that we do not have any skill development programme already. The Government of India
has always considered skill development as a national priority. But this time, all kinds of jobs
will be given equal emphasis. Earlier, the responsibility was divided among various ministries,
but this time, these are being clubbed together. The ministry of skill development and
entrepreneurship will be the principal ministry which is going to coordinate with other ministries
and organizations.

According to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Skill India wont be just a programme but a
movement. Here, youth who are jobless, college and school dropouts, along with the educated
ones, from rural and urban areas, all will be given value addition. The new ministry will be the
certifying agency. Certificates will be issued to those who complete a particular skill or
programme and this certificate has to be recognized by all public and private agencies and
entities, including overseas organizations.

Features Of Skill India

To skill the youths in such a way so that they get employment and also improve
entrepreneurship.
Provides training, support and guidance for all occupations that were of traditional type
like carpenters, cobblers, welders, blacksmiths, masons, nurses, tailors, weavers etc.
Upgrade equipment used by the trainees in Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and
National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) / Staff Selection Commission (SSC).
Mobilize CSR of PSUs to support skill development and scale up apprenticeship training
in PSUs.
Skill development would reach the rural and remote areas also.
Corporate educational institutions, non-government organizations, Government,
academic institutions, and society would help in the development of skills of the youths
so that better results are achieved in the shortest time possible.
The course methodology of Skill India would be innovative, which would include
games, group discussions, brainstorming sessions, practical experiences, case studies etc.

PRESENT SCENARIO OF POLICY

Currently, there are at least 20 different government bodies in India running skill development
programmes with no synergies and considerable duplication of work. For instance, both the
Ministry of Labour and Employment (MoLE) and the Ministry of Human Resource
Development (MHRD) created their own sector skill councils last year to identify skill
development needs in the country, even as the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC)
has been setting up Sector Skill Councils since 2011. A Labour Market Information System
(LMIS) that should have been one centralised resource has been developed in different forms by
at least five government agencies.
Across India, special PMKVY mobilization camps are being organized at 100 locations with
Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS). A national SMS campaign is being rolled out to build
awareness of the program, reaching about 40 crore subscribes. Fresh PMKVY training was

initiated in 1,000 centres across all States and Union Territories in India today, covering 50,000
youth in 100 job roles across 25 sectors. In New Delhi, Shri Rajiv Pratap Rudy flagged off 150
Skill Vans to create awareness among people of Delhi and NCR region on governments policies
and initiatives on skill development.

CONCLUSION
What shape Skill India will take and what it will do only time can tell. But no doubt it seems to
be a good initiative. It is also high time now measures are taken to improve the physical and
mental development of the youths of the country so that none of them remains unemployed and
the countrys unemployment problem also gets reduced. It is time to open up avenues by which
the youth accepts responsibility and no one remains idle because an idle youth is a burden to the
economy. The economy should concentrate on job creation and social security schemes. With
this new approach towards skill development, India can definitely move forward towards its
targeted results.
