Material Specification

GMW15516

Interior Paint for Styrenics

1 Scope
1.1 Material Description. The requirements listed in this specification must be met by all interior paint systems
used in all GM vehicle interiors. Paint systems must follow the steps in Figure 1 to complete the paint approval
process of a part.

Note: APOPS = Approved Paint on Parts

Figure 1: Paint Approval Process of a Part

1.2 Symbols.
1.2.1 Paint Haptics. For a paint material approval, the paint system is required to be listed as approved in the
GM Materials File (MATSPC) system. Paint systems approved to this specification shall be required to carry a
type suffix to indicate the haptic feel that it has to the human skin. The suffix system shall be:

Type A: Soft Touch

Type B: Fabric Feel

Type C: Hard Touch

Type D: Semi-soft Touch

Type F: Satin Touch per GMHM012 Master

Type M: Metallic
Type A, Type B, Type D, and Type F haptic feel must be approved by the Global Haptic Lead prior to evaluating
the paint system performance.
1.2.2 Basecoat/Clearcoat (BC) Applications. Basecoat plus clearcoat systems approved to this specification
shall be approved with the symbol (BC) following the haptic suffix.
1.2.3 Laser Etch (LE) Applications. Laser etch systems approved to this specification shall be approved with
the symbol (LE) following the haptic suffix.
1.3 Applicability. This specification covers requirements for an interior, waterborne or solventborne, one or two
component paint system for use on parts made of paintable styrenics including acrylonitrile butadiene styrene
(ABS), polycarbonate (PC), and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene plus polycarbonate (ABS+PC) blends. All
substrates must be tested per GMW16172 to confirm paintability.
1.4 Remarks. It is strongly recommended that paints approved to this specification are direct adhesion to
styrenics. However, in some limited applications, styrenic substrates can be pretreated by using a primer.

For laser etch paints, it is only required to test over the GMW16727 substrate. GMW15572 and GMW15581
substrates are not required. Paint systems that require laser etching to substrate should chose a substrate
approved to GMW16727 that contains Ultraviolet (UV) stabilizer for testing. Testing for laser etch paints shall
either be done on wedge panels or laser etched samples. A wedge panel is defined as a panel that has equal
size strips of each individual paint layer exposed and tested. The test samples must meet all Sunscreen and
Insect Repellent Resistance and Effects of Cleaners and Lotions requirements when tested at all different
paint layer interfaces. The number of layers tested and approved for the laser etch paint system shall be clearly
documented in the Remarks Section of the MATSPC approval.

Note 1: Testing to be completed on one panel per combination listed above in Table 1.
Note 2: Paint thickness must be specified in paint suppliers data sheet. Default values: 25 m 5 m for Type C, 50 m 5 m for Types
A/B/D/F, 5 m to 10 m for adhesion promoters, 25 m 5 m for primers. New Type M and (BC) colors in approved technologies to note
minimum film thickness in Appearance Database (Blue Sky). Minimum film thickness for each paint layer is technology based and shall be
defined at technology approval and noted in MATSPC.
Note 3: Default is to perform Oven Aging at 105 C unless Heat Deflection Temperature (HDT) of plastic is lower. If lower, the temperature
shall be defined at 85 C or 95 C, whichever is just below the HDT. Default is to use HDT at 455 kPa.
Note 4: Use the cleaners: Sonax Window Cleaner 338241 (Europe), Ammoniated Window Cleaner (North America), Sonax Interior Cleaner
321200 (Europe), Fantastik or Formula 409 (North America), Sonax Stain Remover 653200 (Europe), Armor-All (North America), Armor-All
Protectant (North America). If these cleaners are not available within region, use appropriate cleaners commonly used for automotive interior.
Note 5: If paint is stained but has not lost adhesion or lifted from the substrate, place one panel per substrate in an oven at 80 C for 4 h.
Compare the baked panel to an unbaked panels. The baked panel should show decreased staining. If staining is too severe, GM Materials
Engineering will reject the submission.
Note 6: Natural Weathering (Color) test should be performed on GMW16727, Polycarbonate (PC) substrate only.
Note 7: TNR = Temperature Normalized Radiation.

4 Manufacturing Process
Not applicable.

5.1 Legal Regulations. All materials must satisfy applicable laws, rules, regulations and recommendations valid
in the country of usage.
5.2 Language. In the event of conflict between the English and domestic language, the English language shall
take precedence.
5.3 Inspection and Rejection. Samples of components or materials released to a GM material specification
shall be tested for conformity with the requirements of this material specification and approved by the responsible
Engineering department prior to commencement of delivery of bulk supplies.
A new approval must be received for any changes, e.g., properties, manufacturing process, location of
manufacture, etc. If not otherwise agreed, all testing and documentation normally required for initial release must
be completed.
It is the responsibility of the supplier to inform the customer in a timely manner, without solicitation, and to include
documentation of all modifications of materials and/or processes and to apply for a new release.
5.4 Material Safety Data Sheets/Safety Data Sheets (MSDS/SDS). For new product submissions, or when a
change in chemical composition of an existing product has occurred, a complete copy of the Material Safety
Data Sheet/Safety Data Sheet must be submitted in compliance with the Globally Harmonized System of
Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) requirements or other country-specific MSDS/SDS
requirements. In addition, product MSDS/SDS submissions must be in compliance with specific country General
Motors TMC003 Material Safety Data Sheet/Safety Data Sheet guidance documents where available.
