CORRELATION BETWEEN GLOBAL PEACE AND HUMAN DEVELOPMENT

Memphis Viveros 1

ABSTRACT
Since 2008 the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP) reports peace in 162 nations through the
Global Peace Index (GPI), just as the Human Development Index (HDI) is measured by the
United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the objective of this article is to associate
these two indexes since their correlation is statistically significant and it was found that the
most peaceful countries are the most developed countries, with lower homicide rate and
lower military spending, increased life expectancy at birth increased rate of schooling and
better income per capita. Theories of peace and development had received little or no data to
be tested. In this study these two new indicators of peace and development are used for
measuring the correlation. And that peace can be explained through development.
Keywords: Peace, Development, Welfare, HDI, GPI.
