Key Trends- Background

The rise of STEAM learning

1. STEAM- science, technology,

engineering, arts, mathematics
2.all disciplines can/should
relate to each other.

Key Trends-Support
The rise of STEAM learning

1. Hillburn Academy- STEAM is

an important life philosophy.
2. University of Floridastudents engaged in music
class do better in Math
3. Formal experience with the
arts will foster innovative
thinking, adaptability, and
problem solving skills.

Key Trends

The rise of STEAM learning

1. Congressional STEAM
Caucus has 60 members.
2. Dixon Educational Learning
Academy-Detroit- after
school biology program.
3. Youth in Action STEAM
program demonstrates art
and technology are not
exclusive.

Significant Challenges
Creating Authentic learning opportunities

Resurgence of apprenticeships and internships

Students are partial responsible for their
learning
Greater understanding of their purpose
beyond the classroom

Significant Challenges
Creating Authentic learning opportunities

Need policies that guide school sthrough the

process
Include career technical education
opportunities
Develop on site labs and workshops related to
career education
Portfolios
School leadership increase their awareness

Significant Challenges
Creating Authentic learning opportunities

SKills and knowledge needed for college and

career
It is experiential and hands-on
Improves retention, fosters natural passions
and interests, and exposes students to real
work situations

Significant Challenges
Integrating Technology in Teacher
Education Changing the Way We
Think and the Way Teach Teachers!!!

Significant Challenges
I have all of this great technology
How do I use it?
What if it breaks? Who can I call?

Significant Challenges
How Do We Solve the Puzzle of
Aligning Standards with Technology

Significant Challenges
3 Levels for Teachers and Students

1.

Doing old things the same old way

2.

Doing old things in a new way

3.

Doing something new that we couldnt do before

Significant Challenges
Why Change the Way We Teach?
1.

Create a group of life long learners

2.

Create Authentic real world projects

3.

Homes are loaded with technology

4.

Children are already connected

Reimagining Classrooms: Teachers as Learners and

Students as Leaders | Kayla Delzer | TEDxFargo

Lead the Change!!!

Rethinking the Roles of Teachers

Dare to Make
Significant Challenges

Significant Challenges
Teaching complex thinking
What is it???

The understanding of how systems work to

solve problems
Students must be able to communicate for
complex thinking to be successful

Significant Challenges
Teaching complex thinking
How can we get it done???
1. Teach coding
2. Encourage computer science
3. Integrate coding in K-12 curriculum
a. Students design websites
b. Students use media and other
communications techniques to make
complex ideas understandable

Significant Challenges
Teaching complex thinking
What are policymakers and leaders doing???
1. Develop initiatives that place complex thinking
at the forefront
2. Make computer science as a foundational
discipline
3. Follow countries where complex thinking is
already part of their educational system
successfully

BYOD (bring your own device)

Important Developments
1.BYOD refers to the practice of people bringing their own laptops,
tablets, smartphones or other devices to the learning or work
environment.

2. BYOD policies have shown to reduce overall technology

spending, and they also reflect the contemporary lifestyle.

3. A growing number of models are paving the way for BYOD to

enter the mainstream.

Important Developments
BYOD (bring your own device)-Stats

1.

2014 Consortium of School Networking- 81% of respondents had a

BYOD policy in place or were planning for it.

2.

By 2019, China is to surpass the United States in the adoption of

tablets and digital content in Pre-K through grade 12.

3.

73% of middle and high school teachers use cellphones for classroom
activities.

Important Developments-Examples
BYOD (bring your own device)
1.Periscope being experimented with in schools.
2. The Clark County School District Policy 5136 allows the use of personal technology
and communication devices during instructional time.

3. Debate remains over whether students personal phones should be allowed or banned
for BYOD purposes in schools.

4. Gaston County Schools in Texas, Spanish students choose topics that they are
passionate about and use their smartphones as research tools.

5. Poway Unified School system created an entirely new school based on BYOD
approaches named Design39Campus.

Important Developments
3-D printing

From this

Technology that builds

physical objects from 3D
content.

To this!

Important Developments
3-D printing

Benefits for Educators

3-D scanning technology is an alternative to model designing.

Microsoft developed Kinect as a gaming system enabling digitization

of real objects through scanning.

Has the ability to transform a smartphone to be a portable digital

scanner.

Enables authentic exploration of objects and concepts

Helps students to visualize graphs and mathematical models

Helps students better understand geological concepts

Enable hands on learning encouraging STEAM learning.

Important Developments
3-D printing

Implementation

Adequate training is needed to allow teachers and students to have

digital competency.
School leaders must make available to students and teachers new
tools.

Important Developments
Adaptive learning technologies

Sophisticated
data-driven
software that
adjust to
individual
students needs
as they learn.

Important Developments
Adaptive learning technologies

Benefits for Students

Provides a more personalized learning experience.

Helps struggling learners.
Engages students through gamification.
Provides more robust models.
Takes advantage of the latest developments in artificial intelligence.
Provides higher education placement.

Benefits for Teachers

Provides teachers with a way to support learning

provides the capacity to design assignments uniquely catering to
every student.
Helps teachers and school leaders evaluate their curriculum and
student data
The platform is customizable for teachers so they may use their own
lessons.

Important Developments
Adaptive learning technologies

Implementation

Companies including Dreambox,ALEKS, Realizeit, Sanoma, McGraw

Hill are developing language learning tools for Spanish
Schools and teachers are piloting new programs such as MobyMax.
