Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) of subjecting area residents to harassment and brutality that led to the death of a boda boda operator at Sheikh Barrow, Lafey constituency.

Reign in rogue Hajj agents

The hajj season is once again here with
us. At this time, at least 5,000 Kenyans
have already embarked in various stages
of preparations in readiness for the journey of a lifetime.
To help them facilitate their momentous
journey are Hajj agents whose valuable
services are key to help the pilgrims accomplish the coveted dream of performing the Hajj, the fifth pillar of Islam which
is required of every able bodied Muslims
with the means at least once in a life time.
With the complexities of hajj brought up
by the millions of pilgrims from around the
world who all yearn to perform the pilgrimage, Hajj agents provide a unique and
important role in not only facilitating the
journey to Saudi Arabia but also correctly
perform the rites of pilgrimage at the Haram in Makkah, during their stay in the tent
city of Mina, their sojourn on the plains
Muzdalifa, the standing at Arafah during
the climax of the pilgrimage as well as the
visit to the Prophets city in Madinah.
While many of the Hajj agents provide
commendable services to the visitors of Al
Rahman, it is a worrying trend that some
are not living up to their obligation and

are instead focused on attaining monetary

gains and in the process end up creating
misery to the pilgrims.
Every year, there is an increasing number
of people heading for the pilgrimage and
this appears to be attracting more agents,
some of whom unfortunately see the prospects from a purely business angle and are
only eager to reap financial benefits rather
than facilitating a stress free journey for the
prospective pilgrims.
Almost every year, complaints are on the
increase where pilgrims find themselves
stranded after touching down at the main
pilgrim entry point in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia
without guidance and transport arrangements to Makkah.
After paying for the services in advance,
many are shocked to find themselves
without accommodation, food and other
expected services. It has also become a
common factor where the guests of Allah
often find themselves being housed in areas tens of kilometres away from the haram
yet they had been assured that they will be
provided accommodation in hotels within
walking distance to the haram.
It is also disturbing feature that while the

Qubaa School shines at Worlds Scholars Cup

Mombasa based Qubaa
Muslim School made history by scooping 11 medals
at the international World
Scholars Cup (WSC) 2016
in Bangkok, Thailand. In
the tournament involving
primary and secondary students drawn from over 50
countries with 1150 teams
participating, two Muslim
girls Taheeya Mohammed
and Tanweera Mohammed
from Qubaa Muslim School
emerged among the winners.
The two sisters bagged 3
gold medals and 8 silver
medals and were ranked at
position six in Africa for their
exemplary performance in
the Global Round event.
Africa had 270 teams that
participated in the World
Scholars Cup.
The two girls were also
awarded certificates of merit
by the Mvita Member of Parliament Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir who visited the
school to congratulate them
for their success and performance in the tournament.
The two initially participated
in the regional competition
and merged position 13 in
the country before proceeding to Bangkok for the Global Round held 26th - 30th
June 2016.

event where they emphatically discussed the theme
of the year, an imperfect world which fitted well with
the problems bedevilling the world.
Other main events in the competition included collaborative writing, scholars challenge and scholars
bowl. School director Fatih Akdogan lauded the two
girls for putting the school in the worlds map. He said
the schools investment in clubs was main reason behind the success of Tanweera and Taheeda adding
that Qubaa Muslim School is committed to producing
all rounded students.
.The school was behind our success. We are encouraged by the Project Office which most schools dont
have. Therefore we managed to join global round
said Tanweera Mohamed.

Saudi Arabian embassy issues Hajj and

Umrah visas for free, some of the agents
levy a figure of up to US$300 (Sh30,000)
for the visas which further increases the
financial burden for the pilgrims.
This is not an ethical way of providing
services and shortchanging the guests of
Al Rahman during this spiritual journey.
Some of the pilgrims have taken years
saving their hard earned incomes to have
a memorable journey of their life and their
expectations are instead turned into misery.
It is also important that the Kenya Hajj
Mission which is charged with registration of the hajj agencies to undertake due
diligence before registration and take further steps to monitor the operations of the
agencies to ensure that their operations
meet the threshold of professionalism. For
those who are known to shortchange pilgrims, there is no reason why they should
still be on the list of agents.
Hajj is a an important spiritual journey and
it is imperative that those involved in facilitating this journey adhere to Islamic ethics
to see to it that the pilgrims have a stress
free journey of a lifetime.

will not just sit back and watch as our residents
are harassed and murdered. The anti-terrorism
police and the KDF forces should use their security machinery to pursue Al shabaab attackers and not unarmed civilians, he said.
According to Sheikh Barrow residents Roble
was killed after police officers attacked residents at a shopping mall. After their vehicle
was attacked, they came to the shopping centre, surrounded people and beat us. Some managed to run away but unfortunately one person
was killed and eight others sustained serious
injuries, said Adan Hassan.
Adan noted that police also looted their shops
after beating them. Area OCPD denied the looting allegations and the death of the boda boda
operator by the police. While calling for investigations into incidents of harassments and killings in the area by security agencies Mandera
senator Billow Kerrow said Lafey residents are
torn between constant attacks from Al Shabaab
and collective punishment by security agents.
It is not enough for the government to deny
this harassment of innocent residents time and
again instead of investigating and taking action
against those responsible he said. The senator
said the actions of the officers will not help win
the fight against terrorism and urged security
agencies to work with locals to eliminate threats
facing the country.
Warankara Ward Representative Abdirashid
Osman condemned the abuses and pointed out
that Lafey residents deserve the protection of
security agencies and not abuses. Its regrettable that this kind of human right abuse is still
on going, usually as knee jerk reaction from a
government that has failed to protect the lives
of its citizens from dangers of all sorts, he said.

Dhul Qa'dah 02,1437/August 05, 2016

Common mistakes women make during Hajj or Umrah

Asmaa bint Shameem

Some Muslimahs do not know what irm
means and they think it's the cap that they
put on over their hair, They don't take it off
no matter what, thinking they will break
their irm. Irm is a state that you enter into and putting on any item of clothing
when you enter into the state of irm does
not mean that you cannot take it off later.
And taking it off does NOT mean that you
ended your irm. That's why the 'ulam'
say we can change our irm (meaning our
clothes), and even wash it if it gets dirty.
It is permissible for the pilgrim in irm for
Hajj or 'Umrah to change his irm clothes
and put on another set of irm clothes,
and that does not affect his irm for Hajj
or 'Umrah. (Standing Committee for Academic Research and Issuing Fatwas, Fataawa al-Lajnah, 11/185)
Mistake #2. Excessive fear of breaking
their hair
Some women have an excessive fear of
breaking their hair. So much so that they
don't take off their scarf/dupatta/hijb, even
when they're by themselves or among just
women. They are so worried about their
hair breaking, that they don't even take off
their headpiece for making wu'. This is a
trick of the Shaytn. Think about it. If you
don't do wu' properly, would your prayer
be valid? Would your tawf be valid? Do
you really think Allh would hold you accountable if you did something that was not
in your control? No of course not. He is The
Most Merciful. He is the Most Forgiving.
Then, why would He nullify your irm just
because a few hair fell out on their own,
something that was out of your control! The
prohibition is for the hair to be cut, plucked,
shaved, etc. on purpose. Not involuntarily.
Mistake #3: Getting their hair cut ONLY
by someone who has exited irm
Many women think that ONLY the one who
is NOT in irm can cut their hair, once
they've finished with their rituals. And they
refuse to cut their own hair to exit irm nor
do they allow another sister who has not
yet exited irm to cut it for them, thinking
that she is not allowed to do that for them.
This is a wrong notion. Actually, if you think
about it, you are supposed to cut your hair
when you finish with all the rituals.
The Prophet (allallhu 'alayhi wa sallam) commanded his companions, during
the Farewell Pilgrimage: Let him cut his
(meaning, his own) hair then exit irm.

(al-Bukhri, Muslim)
Mistake #4: Not going to the Jamart or
Muzdalifah
Some of us delegate another hajji to throw
the pebbles on our behalf for no valid reason. We get scared of the crowd or sometimes, get plain old lazy, not understanding the importance of doing it themselves,
even if they are able.
Msh'Allh, Allh has blessed us with
health. Alamdulillh, we are young, energetic, confident, and capable. We are able
to do anything and everything when we are
back home and yet, when it comes to Hajj
and the Jamart, all of a sudden we become frail, little weaklings who cannot go
throw the pebbles.
Don't be lazy about the rituals of Hajj. Realize the significance of doing everything
yourself if you have the ability. There's no
need to be scared at all. Yes, many years
ago, we heard horror stories of stampedes,
and people suffocating or hurting themselves. But not anymore, Alamdulillh
the Saudi government has renovated the
whole Jamart complex a few years ago
and it is the easiest thing in the world. I
have seen old people in wheelchairs, people on crutches, and kids as little as 3 and
4 years old, throwing the pebbles themselves.
If there is a lot of crowd or your safety is an
issue, it can be delayed.
It is permissible to delay their (meaning
women) stoning of the Jamart until the
crowding is less or has stopped, and there
is nothing wrong with them doing that. (Fatawa Shaykh Uthaymeen)
Although it is allowed for women to leave
Muzdalifah after half the night has passed,
if there is an excuse such as sickness,
weakness, or just because we are women.
BUT, it is better if you do stay the whole
night following the Sunnah of the Prophet
(allallhu 'alayhi wa sallam). So don't
chicken out.
Mistake #5: Crowding with the men
Beware of crowding with men in all the
rituals of Hajj, especially during awf
and at the Black Stone, during Sa'i and
when stoning the Jamarat. Choose times
when there is less crowding. Think about
it. Touching the Black Stone is a beautiful
Sunnah, but it is a sunnah. And protecting yourself and your hay' from coming in

unnecessary contact with all non-mahram

men is a FARDH.
The Mother of Believers, ''ishah used to
do awf in an area away from the men,
and she did not touch the Black Stone or
the Yemeni Corner if there was crowding.
It was narrated that 'Ata' said: ''ishah
used to do awf far away from the men,
not mixing with them. A woman said: O
Mother of the Believers, let us go and touch
the Black Stone! She said: Go yourself,
and she refused to go.
In my opinion, the best place for us women
to do awf is up on the roof of the masjid.
Now it may seem like a big distance from
far, but I promise you, all it takes is an hour
and 10 minutes, to be precise, to complete
a awf, walking at an average pace.
Now the Shayn may play with your mind
and make it seem like a lot. But then ask
yourself thisdon't you easily, easily, walk
an hour ten minutes in the mall?
Mistake # 6: Rushing through 'ibdah.
Remember it's about quality, NOT quantity
Remember that Allh will look at the quality of your worship, NOT your quantity. And
that's why our deeds will be weighed on the
Day of Judgment and not counted. If you
pray just two rakah with khush', concentrating on what you are saying, beseeching
Allh with humility, wouldn't that be better
and more acceptable to Allh than even 50
or even a 100 rakah quickly pecking the
ground, without knowing a word of what
you are saying?
Every time you do any 'ibdah, check to
see whether you have khushoo or not? Are
you focused in what you are doing? Do you
know the meaning of what you are saying or asking? Are you moving at a slow,
measured pace or are you rushing through
it? Remember what the Prophet (allallhu

YOUTH

Dhul Qa'dah 02,1437/August 05, 2016

Seven reasons to perform Hajj while young

Ibn Shaima

The feet of man will not slip on the Day

of Resurrection until he is asked of five
things: of his life as to how he spent it, his
youth as to how he used it, his wealth as
to where he got it and how he spent it, and
of his knowledge as to what he did with it.
(Tirmidhi)
From a young age, many of us dream of
going to Hajj to see the Ka`bah in person,
the Station of Ibrahim, drink ZamZam, perform tawaaf (circling the Ka`bah), wear the
white garments of Hajj, and be with brothers and sisters from around the world in
the greatest international gathering in the
history of humanity. It is a rare opportunity
for forgiveness, for change, for turning to
the Creator, and for Paradise, in shaa Allah (God willing).
But it can sometimes feel out of reach and
far away. This is especially the case with
the youth.
But as a person moves on in life, high
school and university finish. There may be
money left over, or loans that finally get
paid off, and a person is in a position to
perform Hajj. At the same time, there are
many options in life. It could be marriage,
travel or vacation one has to choose. For
the young, with all of lifes possibilities tugging at the heart, here are a few reasons to
put ones heart, efforts, and resources into
making that life-long dream a reality: the
journey of Hajj.
1. If the door is open, It may never open
again
The dream has finally had its means made
easy will you fulfill it? Life is so short on
earth; we never know if this opportunity will
come again. In fact, Allah subhanahu wa
ta`ala (exalted is He) tells us how short life
on earth is: You stayed not but a little if
only you had known, (Quran, 23:114)
If the door for performing Hajj is finally
open, a person should jump at the chance
to perform it. Ibn `Umar, radhi Allahu `anhu
(may Allah be pleased with him), said,
When evening comes, do not expect
(to live till) morning, and when morning
comes, do not expect (to live till) evening. Take from your health (a preparation)
for your illness, and from your life for your
death. (Bukhari)
2. Hasten toward Hajj
Expedite the performance of Hajj. For nobody knows what may obstruct one. (Ibn
Majah, Ahmad)
Along with not knowing what may obstruct
one if one does not take the open opportunity to perform Hajj, the Prophet peace
be upon him told us to expedite the performance of Hajj. We are told to get it done,
not put it on the backburner or be lax concerning its performance, or to put other
things as a priority above it. It is a duty to
be fulfilled for Allah, a pillar of Islam. For
someone who has had the means to perform Hajj for some time and does not go,
the Prophet peace be upon him informed
us of the state of loss of such a person: Al-

lah said: Any of My slaves who is healthy

and are of the means for five years, and
did not visit My house, he is mahroom.
(Ibn Hibban and Musnad)
The direct translation of mahroom is deprive, meaning a person who is able to go
to Hajj and does not, has deprived themselves of something good and of benefits
that cannot be imagined that will be regretted on the Day of Judgment.
3. Hajj decreases poverty
The Prophet peace be upon him said,
Keep on doing Hajj and Umrah, because
they both eliminate poverty and sins just
like a furnace eliminates the dirty impurities of iron, gold and silver. And an accepted Hajj has no reward less than
Paradise! (Tirmidhi, Nisaai, Ahmad) It
is important that we do not let our worries
stop us from going, if we have the means.
If we are concerned for our sustenance,
one should perform Hajj with the expectation of improving its state, however Allah
wills for that to happen.
4. The Supplication
One of the most prominent features of
Hajj is supplication to Allah. One does it
so much on Hajj. But what is more, the
supplication of Hajj is answered in shaa
Allah; and the best supplication is that of
Arafah during Hajj. The warrior in the path
of Allah, the one performing Hajj and the
one performing Umrah are the delegations
of Allah. If they call on Allah they are answered and if they ask Him for anything it
is given to them. (Ibn Maajah, Ibn Hibban)
The best supplication is the supplication
on the day of Arafah [] (Tirmidhi, Malik)
There is no other day when Allah sets free
more slaves from the Fire than the day of
Arafah, for that day He comes nearer to
them and says proudly to the angels: What
do these people seek? (Muslim)
Now for the youth looking to improve their
lives to get that nice job, get into that
school, improve their relationship with Allah and draw near to Him, marry that wonderful man or woman, have that a family
member come to Islam or get back on the
straight path, Hajj is the place to be. Hajj is
where its at. Think of having supplicated
during Hajj and living life from now on benefitting from those supplications in shaa
Allah.
5. The release from sin
Not only is Hajj a priceless opportunity for
supplication, it is a chance to wipe clean
the slate of ones mistakes and shortcomings of the past. One who comes to this
House for Hajj and avoids all lewdness
and sins, he returns as he was on the day
his mother gave birth to him. (Bukhari and
Muslim) Imagine having all of ones mistakes wiped away, and having a clean and
healthy conscience, mind and heart and a
purified soul in shaa Allah. Imagine experiencing this rebirth of sorts from a young
age. It is a dream; it is priceless.

Man's greatest
enemy: Satan

You may already know about Satan,

but do you know that he also knows
you very well and resorts to every
method to tempt you? Do you know
that the actual purpose of Satan,
who pretends to be your friend, is
to deceive you? Let's start from the
very beginning and remind ourselves
why Satan is our enemy. For this purpose, we will turn to the story about
Adam and Satan in the Qur'an.
In the Qur'an, Satan is the general
name given until the Day of Judgment to all beings who have committed themselves to lead man astray.
Iblis is the principal evil being who
rebelled against Allah when He created Adam.
According to the Qur'anic account,
Allah created Adam and then called
the angels to prostrate to him. The
angels complied with Allah's command, but Iblis refused to prostrate
to Adam. He impiously asserted that
he was superior to man. Because of
his disobedience and insolence, he
was banished from Allah's sight.
Before leaving Allah's presence, Iblis requested time from Allah to lead
people astray. The purpose of Iblis
is to tempt people and thus to make
them turn away from the right path
within the period of time granted
to him. He will try anything to make
the majority of people subject to
himself. Allah proclaims that He will
send Satan and his followers to the
Fire.
After being banished from Allah's
sight, Satan set upon the struggle that would last until the Day of
Judgment. Since then, he has cunningly approached people, schemed
to lead them astray and used unprecedented methods for this end.
As you now understand better, Satan is a foe that can approach man
very cunningly. For this reason, you
have to be watchful to escape him.
Never forget that Satan is lying in
ambush right now to scheme against
you. He tries to stop you from doing good deeds, and to get you to become disrespectful and disobedient
to your parents elders, and to hinder you from giving thanks to Allah,
praying and always telling the truth.
Never allow Satan to deceive you
and to hinder you from becoming a
person of good character and listening to the voice of your conscience.
You must take refuge in Allah by saying audhu billahi minna shaitan rajim
and ask help from Him when an evil
thought occurs to you or when you
find yourself unwilling to do a good
deed, since all these are the cunning
tricks of Satan.

Common mistakes by women during Hajj or Umrah

Continued From Page 4

steals from his prayer! The Companions
asked, Oh Messenger of Allah! How does
one steal from his prayers? The Prophet
(allallhu 'alayhi wa sallam), responded,
He does not complete his bowing, nor
his prostrations. Or he said He does not
straighten his backbone while bowing and
prostrating. (Ahmed, Al-abarani, others
authentic)
Mistake #7: Misbehaving in the masjid
of the Prophet
One of the worst mistakes that I see the sisters making is at the Prophet's (allallhu
'alayhi wa sallam) masjid. When the doors
are opened, in the morning and evening,
for the sisters so that they can visit the
Raudhah of the Prophet (allallhu 'alayhi
wa sallam), they totally lose all sense of
who they are, where they are and what
they are doing.
They run like wild animals let loose, shouting and screaming in ignorance, pushing
each other, trampling anyone and everyone that comes in their way.
SubnAllh sisters! Is this what the
Prophet (allallhu 'alayhi wa sallam),
taught us?! Is this the way you behave in
a masjid, let alone the Prophet (allallhu
'alayhi wa sallam)'s masjid?! Is this the respect he (allallhu 'alayhi wa sallam), deserves from you?
Remember when visiting the Prophet
(allallhu 'alayhi wa sallam),'s masjid, to
behave with honor and dignity, with the
hayaa' that Allh has adorned you with,
as a believing Muslim woman would. Remember to keep your voice soft and your
walk paced. Don't shove, push, harm or
hurt your fellow Muslim sisters. Even if you
didn't get a chance to pray in that area, if
you let your sister pray there for the sake
of Allh just because she is your Muslim
sister, Allh will reward you, and He knows
best, perhaps even more than He would
have, had you yourself had a chance to
pray there.
Mistake #8: Wasting precious time in
Mina
I see so many sisters wasting their time
talking with each other, about nothing specific, mingling and socializing with the other
Hajjis, while they are staying in Mina and
even on the day of Arafah, which is the
most important day of Hajj. They forget that
these are the most blessed days in which
ibdah is dearest to Allh. They forget that
Mina is not a place to socialize; rather it is
a place for ibdah and dhikr and istighfr
and du''. They forget that Day of Arafah is
THE DAY for Hajj. That's what this whole
journey is all about. Instead of remembering Allh, they busy themselves with idle
talk, laughing, joking, even gheebah and
gossip.
Now, there's nothing wrong with talking
for a little bit and to enquire about each
other's well being, etc. In fact, it becomes
an act ibdah of if you talk with that niyyah of being kind and polite to your fellow
Muslim or for taking a little rest in between
your ibdah to refresh yourself. But when

Page 6

this talking takes over one's time and this

is what a person is doing the majority of
the time in Mina, then it becomes a serious
issue of wasting precious time. And in the
end, no one loses but you.
Mistake # 9: Being uncovered in Muzdalifah
Muzdalifah is an open ground and there are
no tents, etc and the bathrooms are in an
open field. When the sisters make wuh'
there, they forget that they are in an open
area and there are men everywhere who
can see them. Yet, they take off their ijbs
and dupattas right in front of them to make
wuh', thus exposing themselves. So how

does one make wuh' in such a situation?

There is an easy solution to all of this.
Whenever you need to make wuh', go
with a few women as a group and take
turns making wuh' while the others can
hold up a piece of cloth, ijb, etc in such
a way as to cover you and hide you completely. This way no one can see you, in
shaa Allh.
May Allh enable us to perform Hajj according to the Sunnah of the Prophet (allallhu
'alayhi wa sallam), in a manner that is most
pleasing to Him. May Allh accept this Hajj
from all of us and make it Mabroor. Ameen.

Reasons to perform Hajj while young

Continued From Page 5
6. Utilize Your Youth
Not only is Hajj a chance to be reborn in
terms of ones past mistakes and shortcomings in life, it is also a chance for the
youth to take advantage of the fresh health
they are often given by Allah, the Most
Generous. There are two blessings which
many people do not make the most of and
thus lose out: good health and free time.
(Bukhari) Take advantage of this great
blessing that is guaranteed for no one. Hajj
is not only a spiritual, emotional, and intellectual experience, but also a very physical
one. No matter how young or in-shape you
are, you will stand to benefit from every last
bit of youthful energy and physical health
Allah has blessed you with during Hajj.
7. Experience the World
As a young person, valuable life lessons
taken from an early age are precious and
can leave a lasting impression. One of the
greatest life lessons anyone can learn and
experience most vividly on Hajj is that human beings are equal to each other. Equal,
that is, except in terms of taqwa, or Allah
consciousness and reverence. On Hajj
this is not an ideal of the mind or on the
tongue, but is something put into practice,
witnessed and experienced. During the
Hajj itself, in part of what is known as the
Farewell Sermon, the Prophet peace be
upon him said, All mankind is from Adam
and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over
a non-Arab, nor a non-Arab any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over a back nor a black any superiority over a white, except by piety and
good action. Learn that every Muslim is a
brother to every Muslim and that the Muslims constitute one brotherhood. (Excerpt
from Khutbatul Wada, amongst collections
of Bukhari, Muslim, Tirmidhi, Ahmad)
From virtually every nook and corner of the
Earth, men and women gather together in
unity and submission to Allah during Hajj.
Men all wear the same simple, white cloth
garments; men and women perform the
same acts of worship; young and old and
even children participate; the rich and the
poor mix. Everyone is equal before Allah
and their piety is ultimately only known to
Him, and He is their final Judge. Going
through such an experience on a large

scale with millions of people, in shaa Allah, will open up the mind, heart, and soul
to what it really means to be a human being amongst everyone on earth, much
less what it truly means to be a Muslim in
peaceful surrender to Allah.

Northern Kenya governors laud Turkey for devt support

Governors from counties in Northern
Kenya have lauded Turkey for its assistance towards development programmes
in the region. Under their umbrella organ, the Frontier Counties Development
Council, the governors expressed their
appreciation from the government of Turkey for supporting a wide range of development projects in the water, health,
agriculture education and poverty alleviation sector.
Through the Turkish International Cooperation and Development Agency (TIKA),
the governors said Northern Kenya has
been among the main beneficiaries of
Turkish aid to the country and said that
the support has also contributed to socio-economic development of the areas.
We have received a lot of support from
Turkey as counties from the northeastern in terms of development projects
such as water and healthcare. We would
like to be associated with this type of relationship, said Garissa Governor Nathif
Jama.
In his remarks, the Isiolo Deputy Governor Mohamed Guled commended Turkey for its role in supporting global security and addressing the challenges facing
refugees. The remarks were made during a visit by the governors to the Turkish Ambassador Deniz Eke to express
their support and solidarity with the people of Turkey in the aftermath of the last
months coup attempt.
Despite the attempt to overthrow the
popularly elected government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the envoy
gave an assurance that the three-month
state of emergence imposed in the aftermath of the coup will not affect trade and
other relationships with Kenya. Our bilateral relationship with Kenya and other
countries is still intact," she clarified.
We have been negotiating key agreements to follow up on the memorandum
of understanding we signed and this has
not been affected by the coup attempt,
she added while referring to agreements
reached during President Erdogans visit
to Kenya in June this year.
"Our water, health, agriculture and economic projects will go on. We even intend to expand the programmes," added
Mete Anac, the programme Coordinator
TIKA Nairobi office. The Turkish government accused Turkish preacher Fethullah Gulen of being behind the coup and
has called for his extradition from the
United States where he is based. Turkey has also pointed fingers at Western
states for supporting the coup plotters
whose action led to the death of more
than 240 people while more than 1,400
were left with injuries.
The ambassador gave a reassurance
that measures being taken against those
involved in the coup attempt, fully respect
fundamental rights and freedoms and
the rule of law. President Uhuru Kenyatta
is expected to visit Turkey in August in
a move which will further cement bilateral ties with the two countries. Others

present at the meeting at Turkish embassy were the Wajir governor Ahmed
Abdullahi and his Mandera counterpart
Ali Roba , while those from Lamu and
Tana River sent representatives.
In the wake of the coup, President Uhuru Kenyatta was among the first lead-

ers to condemn the attempt to topple President

Recep Tayyep Erdogans administration. The
ignoble act to dislodge a democratically elected
government of Turkey through violent military
means is completely unacceptable and we in
Kenya join the rest of the world in condemning
the act unreservedly, he said at the time.

Dandora Muslims resolve to foster interfaith dialogues

Muslim residents of Dandora area in Nairobi have embarked on plans to promote

interfaith dialogues in a move aimed at
fostering unity and promoting religious
tolerance. Sheikh Sadik Khamis, director of Darul Hijra Mosque and Madrasa
in Mowlem area observed that harmony
and progress in the area will be enhanced
through peaceful coexistence and mutual
understanding among different religions
and communities.
While addressing Muslim faithful at Darul
Hijra Masjid recently, Sheikh Sadik reminded, Muslims on their responsibility of engaging in dialogue and working
together in positive societal causes to
promote harmony and community progress. The interactions, he said will also
help in debunking the misconceptions labeled against Islam and Muslims. ''There
is need to counter the existing misconceptions against Islam and Muslims that
it is a faith that promotes violence and
this task is better undertaken by Muslims
Continued From Page 1

themselves. The only people who can change

these wrong notions are ourselves,'' he said.
He described Muslims and Christians as members of the same humanity and descendants
of Prophet Adam and Hawa (Eve) pointing out
that that the difference in belief should not be
a reason to create hostility and suspicions.
The differences in terms of nations and tribes
should not be a reason for division, discrimination, enmity, hatred and violence amongst
ourselves. No one is entitled to dehumanize
another for professing different faith, he said.
Sheikh Sadik emphasized on the need for
Muslims to remain true to their faith and also
take strides to further their education for their
self and community development and not to be
swayed by the emerging challenges such as
westernization, secularization and globalization which could corrupt the minds of Muslims.
The initiative will include dialogues with members of other religious communities and forums to work together in promoting societal
development.

Matiangi told to stay put

Munawar lauded Matiangi stand for refusing calls to close schools early noting
that the move would disrupt learning and
the completion of syllabus leading to poor
performance among students.
Also coming to his defense, Mandera
senator Billow Kerrow said embattled
Matiangi should remain adamant on the
course to reform the education sector and
ignore the naysayers. Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi should remain firm, and pursue his determination
to clean up the education sector without
looking over his shoulder, said the Senator.
Billow said Matiangi attempts to clean
the mess in the education sector is being sabotaged by those affected by his
changes adding that his action to reform
are long overdue.
He further called for firm action to be taken against school heads for negligence
and failure to end the wave of unrest. I
believe such firm action will act as deterrent to the rest of the schools. It is inconceivable that a group of students can
plan to execute an attack and the school
leadership has absolutely no clue at all,
he said.
While further rebuking those calling for
the resignation of Matiangi and the premature closure of schools, the senator
urged parents to throw their weight behind the CS for the interest of the childrens education.
On his part, Muhammad Guleid deputy

governor of Isiolo attributed the school unrests

to societal decadence and lack of good role
models for the students. He also noted that
the fact that schools in North Eastern have not
been affected by the arson wave could give
credence to the assertions that exam cheating
cartels are behind the spate of attacks in many
schools. Most of the schools in Northern Kenya perform poorly. Could there be a correlation
there? he asked.
The changes being initiated by Matiangi have
largely been blamed on the ongoing school unrest that has seen over 100 schools set ablaze.

Pope Francis says it is wrong to identify

Islam with violence

Pope Francis says it is wrong to equate violence with Islam, adding that "I do not believe that it is true or right that Islam is terrorist."
On a flight back to the Vatican after a five-day visit to Poland,
Francis was asked by a reporter about remarks he made following last week's attack on a church in northern France in which an
elderly priest was brutally murdered.
The reporter asked the pope why he refers to terrorists but never
to Islam when talking about such violent incidents.
Francis responded that the characterization of Islam as violent
is untrue and that violence committed by extremist groups such
as the Islamic State should not be attributed to the religion as a
whole.
"If I speak of Islamic violence, I should speak of Catholic violence," the pope said.
"I believe that in pretty much every religion there is always a small
group of fundamentalists," he said, adding, "When fundamentalism comes to kill, it can kill with the language the Apostle
James says this, not me and even with a knife, no?"
Francis went on to say that the real cause of terrorism lies in the
idolatry of wealth: "Terrorism grows when there are no other options, and when the center of the global economy is the god of
money and not the person.".
Earlier last week, the Pope said that the latest string of attacks
were proof the world is at war but that it was not caused by
religion.

Ummah Madrasah Program

Madrasah literally in Arabic language means school. It is therefore in this context of a religious school that aims at teaching Islam
and the Islamic cultural values including Arabic as a language.
The Madrasah system in Kenya has been operating in the same
way like it did so many centuries back. Many of the current Madrasahs were started by individuals in homes or in private accommodations. Others are run by Mosque committees. To a large extend
many suffer from the state of non-reform due to individualization
of these institutions.
In the Arab states and some other countries, Muslims have schools
Madarasas that teach all secular subjects together with Islamic
subjects like Quran and its exegesis, Traditions of the prophet
(Hadeeth), Jurisprudence (Figh), Etiquettes (Akhlaq), Prophets
biography (Seerah). In this manner no distinction has been made
between the two as it all amounts to knowledge seeking.
Those who graduate from such like systems have the full potential
to practice their religious rites in line with their other specialties
without any contradictions. A medical doctor who can recite relate
the noble verses of the Quran to the current and dynamic developmental issues. This is the product of this well-intended set up.
Other learning set ups, like the ones in Kenya are different. There
is no link between these religious Madrasahs and the school system. If to a little extend the schools are only lucky and privileged to
at least have some few Islamic lessons taught to its pupils and students in terms of Islamic Religious Education which suffers from
deficiency of qualified trained teachers, capable of handling the
subject and giving it the rights it deserves.
Ummah Foundation and likeminded Organisations have strived to
think a long this line of how best can we stream line the current
system to be able to be productive in terms of quality of its graduands. For the past nine years, we have ran Madrasahs in Nakuru,
Kisumu and Magadi.
The objective is to give chance to Muslim students in these areas
to learn at a tender age their religion and at the same time be able
to attend school like the rest of the Kenyan pupils. This was also
aimed at:
1- Providing a holistic education compatible with Islamic principles
and practices.
2- Enabling our young learners to live harmoniously in our multicultural society and to contribute to the growth and wellbeing of
our nation.
3- Preserving our Islamic identity and commitment to the development of the Ummah.
4- Starting a foundation to a more unified system that can run our
Madrasahs with potential trained teachers.
Even though the results are still far to be realized but in the long
term, we project positive outcomes. It is also in this spirit that Ummah Foundation is very encouraged and motivated by the efforts
and achievements made by Muslim Education Council (MEC) to
formalize the process of our Madrasah systems in the Kenyan
Education Curriculum.
We would like to call upon all the stakeholders in the education
sector to give it all in terms of promoting our religious learning at
all levels. The future of this Ummah rests heavily with the efforts
that are being made now.
