The Kodak i30 and i40 Scanners are compact
document scanners perfect for small office and other
decentralized applications. These scanners have a 50page automatic document feeder that scans 25 pages
per minute. The scanner interface is USB 2.0. For your
image processing needs, the TWAIN Datasource and
ISIS Driver are included with the Kodak i30/i40
Scanners. The scanners provide excellent functionality
and scanning speed for the price.
The information provides more in-depth information on
the product features.
Image quality and image processing
The i30/i40 Scanners offer excellent true color image quality which allows the scanner
to be used for image processing applications such as desktop publishing. This begins
with high-quality mirrors, lenses, and a 5340-element color CCD that captures 24
lines/mm at 600 dpi. It captures 48-bit color in a single pass. Grayscale images are
captured with 8-bit equals 256 levels of gray. Black-and-white images contain one-bit per
pixel.
Perfect Page with iThresholding
Perfect Page with iThresholding delivers high-quality black-and-white images from a
large range of both poor- and high-contrast documents and reduces the need to pre-sort,
rescan, and perform post-image processing. You get better image and text legibility,
smoother lines, minimal to no artifacts, and fewer shaded areas with minimal or no user
intervention.

Scan mixed batches of documents of varied contrast in background and/or text with the
iThresholding features and the scanner dynamically evaluates each document in the
batch to determine the optimal threshold value to produce the highest quality image.
Brightness is automatically adjusted for each individual document for highlighting, low
contrast, and lightweight paper.

September 2004

Perfect Page is a combination of built-in powerful imaging technologies. Every scan is

optimized as it is captured. Perfect Page scanning also shifts gears automatically to
handle a wide range of documents.
Auto crop
Auto crop dynamically adjusts the cropping window for different document sizes. Based
on the edges of the image detected, the i30/i40 Scanner dynamically detects the
boundaries of the document and only delivers the actual document to the end user. Auto
cropping for a page accurately occurs anywhere within the imaging window of the
transport.

Deskew
The skew detection and correction feature performs accurate deskew on the 8-bit image.
The front and back of the image are deskewed independently at full scanner speed.
Deskew is based on the document edges not the content within the document. This
provides an assurance that document information will not be lost.

The algorithm is also less sensitive to background noise and provides for deskew at an
angle up to 45 degrees with an accuracy of 0.3 degrees.
Color drop-out
For forms processing applications, the i30/i40 Scanners enable color dropout through
the driver. Many colors can be dropped out during black-and-white and grayscale
scanning by adjusting the red, green, or blue channels. This allows you to improve your
forms processing and text recognition applications by eliminating unwanted boxes and
lines.

September 2004

Image output
The scanner outputs either compressed or uncompressed raw data to your application.
This ensures the highest possible image quality for all kinds of applications. Use your
scanning application to select an image format in which to save the image data.
The bundled software applications can output a variety of popular image formats,
including:
TIFF (single- and multi-page)
PDF via Readiris
BMP
JPEG
Brightness and Contrast Control
Brightness and Contrast Control provides customers with the ability to create their own
custom color tables to meet any unique scanning need. Once a color table has been
created, it can be downloaded to the scanner and used in production. The color tables to
be used for front and back images are set independently. When scanning, only one color
table can be applied to each image (front or back). The same color table can be used for
both the front and the back, or use one color table for the front and one color table for
the back. These tables can be easily managed by capture applications.
Simultaneous Output
The i30/i40 Scanners scan in color, but can output in color, grayscale, or bi-tonal
images; grayscale and bi-tonal images; or color and bi-tonal images without further
processing required by the host.

Multi-Feed Detection
Consistent with other Kodak scanners is the option for length checking (maximum
lengths). This allows the Multifeed Detection system to be used in applications where
document thickness may vary and provides an extra level of confidence when scanning
similar length documents.

September 2004

Paper handling
The input tray and automatic document feeder (ADF) of the i30/i40 Scanners are
designed to stack and feed up to 50 sheets of 7.3 kg (16 lb.) bond paper reliably across
the entire range of document sizes.
The feeder reliably accepts a wide variety of paper weight, with no operator intervention
necessary after the initial loading. While the ADF works best with similar size
documents, it also handles the feeding of mixed document sets (batches) consisting of
varying paper weight and sizes.

USB 2.0 interface

The fast USB 2.0 interface is the technology that extends the speed of the scanner to
the PC connection up to 40 times faster than existing capabilities. USB 2.0 will support
the most demanding PC user applications, enables easy, plug-and-play connectivity and
rapid transfer of images. A USB 2.0 cable and board are included with the scanner to get
you up and running fast.
Performance and reliability
The i30/i40 Scanners fit imaging applications with volumes of a few dozen up to 1,000
pages per day. However, if you continuously exceed the peak volume, you should
consider a second Kodak i30/i40 Scanner or another scanner from the Kodak family of
scanners, such as a Kodak i200 Series Scanner.
Speeds and output resolutions
A built-in 50-page ADF allows continuous and reliable scanning. The ADF handles a
wide variety of documents from 8.9 x 5 cm (3.5 x 2 in.) to 21.6 x 35.5 cm (8.5 x 14 in.) at
speeds of 25 pages per minute (ppm). This speed and paper handling greatly improves
throughput and reduces waiting time for the images, while maintaining the highest
quality levels. Available resolutions: 75, 100, 150, 200, 240, 300, 400 or 600 dpi.

VRS compatible
Since the Kodak i30 and i40 Scanners will output grayscale images at full speed,
customers wishing to use the features found in Kofaxs VRS product may take
advantage of those features.
Customer maintenance
The i30/i40 Scanner was designed with low operator maintenance in mind. The scanner
makes use of lifetime transport rollers and lamps. These are typically expensive items
that must be replaced on competitive scanners by the operator or service personnel. The
only required supply item for the i30/i40 Scanners is the feed module, which is easily
replaced by the operator.
The feed module has an estimated life of 20,000 pages. The feed module must be
replaced when the scanners document feeding quality decreases.
The only other maintenance that the i30/i40 Scanners require is the cleaning of the
imaging guides and rollers when they become contaminated by paper dust or ink.

NSS
The Kodak i30/i40 Scanners are targeted at departments with document imaging and
general office scanner application needs.
Research from end users who purchase workgroup scanners shows that:

The primary reason for purchasing a workgroup scanner is for the digitization of
business documents and web publishing. Applications are numerous and include
financial, insurance, accounting, research, education, legal, consulting,
transportation, government and regulatory, and commercial and manufacturing.

A very strong secondary reason for purchasing a scanner of this type is for general
office scanning of photos, graphics materials, magazines, newspapers, applications,
compound documents (photo and text), tear sheets (annual reports, magazines, and
yellow pages), sales collateral, and educational materials.

Decentralized/Distribution Scanning
The idea behind this approach to scanning is to move digital capture of the business
documents closer to the point of origination as possible. For example, in a
centralized scanning environment, document capture may have occurred at a central
office location. In this scenario, the documents are mailed to the scanning site and
the data or images are not indexed and are not available for use for several days.
Decentralized/distributed scanning moves the capture process closer to the point of
document origination. Scanning is typically conducted by operators who are not
necessarily dedicated to the task. Typically, medium-to-large organizations purchase
dozens or hundreds of scanners in the course of rolling out a decentralized/
distributed imaging project.

Standalone Workgroup Scanning

This approach to scanning is usually very localized. In other words, the department
that captures documents is also the department that either creates or receives the
business documents primarily for its own use. The scanner host PC may or may not
be attached to a network to share the images with other departments. Typically, one
to a few scanners are purchased by the department manager.

The i30 Scanner scans in simplex mode and the i40 Scanner scans in duplex mode.
It scans faster than most scanners in this segment and offers outstanding
price/performance.

Time is money. A scanner has to operate at a speed of at least 25 ppm in order not
to waste the valuable time of the scanner operator. Even if a competitive scanner
costs $1000 less, the payback time for the investment in a faster and more
professional scanner can be less than a month.

Our duty cycles are high and maintenance is easy, while other scanners can fail after
a few thousand pages. The i30/i40 Scanner has a life of more than 500,000 pages,
which makes it a lifetime investment. Many other scanners are hard to clean or have
consumables that are difficult to replace. The i30/i40 Scanner is so simple that even
an untrained operator can use the scanner and replace the feed module.

Kodak has bundled ISIS and TWAIN drivers and basic document imaging application
software. Other scanners do not include ISIS drivers or a professional document
imaging application such as Kodak Capture Software Lite.

These scanners feature basic and advanced document processing functions such as
color drop-out or page set-ups that can be applied to document batches.

Kodaks worldwide service and support.

The document feeder is very reliable and robust a feature that is greatly
appreciated by most customers.

The image quality in black-and-white, grayscale and color is outstanding.

Recommended daily volumes are up to 1,000 lettersize/A4 pages per day, while
other devices are designed for up to 500 pages per day or less. Kodak can claim
two- to three-times better daily volumes and our scanners are more durable. Other
devices are designed for very low volumes or casual use.

Know where you can win and when to walk away

Be sure your reseller understands the end users needs. If the customer requires
network connectivity, very low price, or a combined scanner/printer device, then we do
not have the product set that best meets these needs. Its best that both you and your
reseller not waste additional time.
When the customers primary need is for document capture at high speed and the
customer is tempted by the specs of these other devices, then we can counter with our
strengths.

The workgroup scanner category is highly competitive with numerous scanner
manufacturers and models. The scale of feature/functionality differences among
departmental scanners is much less than the scale of feature/functionality differences
among production class scanners. It is clearly a challenge for manufacturers to achieve
features-based product superiority in such a competitive category. To be successful, we
must leverage all of the differentiators (both product and non-product) including our
service and support, our entire scanner portfolio, and relationships with all of our
partners, including resellers, distributors, and software providers.

Competitive scanners
Some document scanners are not very reliable and often cannot be repaired when they
break. The cost of the repair usually exceeds the scanners price. Other scanners may
not scan in duplex mode and may have weak ADFs. On some scanners, you cannot
even replace the consumables. Image processing functions usually do not exist and
professional drivers are not available.
Less expensive scanners usually have a less advanced feeding mechanism, which
tends to jam or double-feed documents. Also, on most scanners, the feed rollers must
be frequently replaced. The i30/i40 Scanner has only one consumable part, the feed
module, which is simply snapped in.

Workgroup, network scanners, and MFDs

Occasionally, you may be confronted with comparisons of workgroup, network scanners,
or multifunctional devices (MFD) against the i30/i40 Scanner. There are dozens of
makes and models on the market with many new models introduced every year. We do
not plan to benchmark all of these devices; however, the following information is offered
to assist you in your efforts.

Nature of these other devices

These other devices are typically higher-end consumer products with fewer features.
They generally have high optical resolution and much higher output resolutions (2400
dpi).
Scanner speed specifications often rival departmental class scanners, but be sure to
check the fine print. These speeds usually do not specify document size, or dots per
inch. To achieve these scanning speeds, these devices generally require less than
lettersize/A4 documents, lower dpi, or both.

September 2004

Competitive products
Competitive comparison charts are included at the end of this document contrasting the
Kodak i30/i40 Scanner with its major competition.
This information was gathered through sell sheet materials supplied (physically or via the
Internet) by the manufacturer. Other data has been provided by Kodak Engineering staff,
Value-Added Distributors, and outside consultants. Several categories of information
require special explanation for a full understanding of the following competitive profiles.

Scanner speed
All manufacturers have provided the stated speed(s) of their paper transports. Be
extremely cautious using these figures, as scanners cannot usually function at these
speeds due to constraints in paper handling, jams, or restrictions at the computer
(SCSI/Video/USB) interface.

Capture resolution/output resolution

Capture resolution is the actual dpi of the image as the scanner captures it. Some
scanners can interpolate up to a higher output resolution than the optical or actual
capture resolution (i.e., a 300 dpi image can be interpolated up to look like a 600 dpi
image), but it can never contain the information that would be included if it actually had
been scanned with a true 600 dpi scanner. Final image quality is dependent on multiple
variables, such as the quality of the lens, light, CCD, and image processing routines.
NOTE: Every effort has been made to verify the features and performance,
information shown on the following pages. As conditions change, however,
Kodak cannot accept responsibility for the validity of competitive data.

Is the full version of Capture Software available for the i30/i40 Scanner?
Yes. Version 6.5 of Capture Software supports the i30/i40 Scanner.
A special production version of Capture Software called Capture Software Lite is
enclosed and shipped with the i30/i40 Scanner. This limited production version is
sufficient for use as a departmental application. It allows scanning, viewing, and storing
in standard batch output formats (Single-page TIFF, Multi-page TIFF, PDF, and
Release). In addition, all features of the i30/i40 Scanner are supported. No hardware key
is required.
The full version of Capture Software v6.5 has these additional features and functionality:
Software bar code and patch code reading
Indexing from bar codes or key data entry
Only one index field is available in Capture Software Lite. Up to 10 index fields are
available in the full version.
Blank Page Separation
Automatic Batch and Document Separation
Auto-deletion of blank images
Merge and Split of black-and-white images
User profiles
Software length detection (e.g., flag errors on multifeeds)
Post-Scanning Toolbar functions (Insert, Rescan, Crop, Blank, Move image, Copy
image (or image area), Split document)
Calendar Duplex Mode
Access to all Capture Software Batch Output Formats (currently over 30 available)

How do you plan to distribute this product?

We plan to distribute the i30/i40 Scanner through our current distributors. We are also
working with our distribution partners to deliver programs to those VARs who specialize
in selling large quantities of low-end scanners.

Does this scanner offer Perfect Page?

Yes. The i30/i40 Scanner offers basic and advanced image processing functionality
user-adjustable controls and a preview mode which differentiates it from competitors,
it does not currently offer Perfect Page technology.
