DR. ANUPAMA KUNDOO

Architecture is the science of

designing and building buildings and

some non-building structures In other
words its about reflecting social,
environmental and aesthetic
consideration by planning, designing
forms, space and ambience and also
the creative manipulation of material
and technology; of light and shadow.
In many ancient civilizations, such as
those of Egypt and Mesopotamia,
architecture and urbanism reflected
the constant engagement with the
divine and the supernatural,
after World War I, pioneering
modernist architects sought to
develop a new post-war social and
economic order, focused

on meeting the needs of the

middle and working
classes.The approach of the
Modernist architects was to
reduce buildings to pure
forms, removing historical
references and ornament in
favor of functionalist details.
Buildings displayed their
functional and structural
elements, exposing steel
beams and concrete surfaces
instead of hiding them behind
decorative forms. This is
referred to as modern
architecture.

Kundoo has built extensively in India and has had the experience of working, researching and teaching in a variety of cultural
contexts across the world: TU Berlin, AA School of Architecture London, Parsons New School of Design New York, University of
Queensland Brisbane, IUAV Venice and ETSAB Barcelona. She is currently Professor at UCJC Madrid where she is Chair of Affordable
Habitat.
Whats special about her is that her approach to building design is based on material research that minimizes environmental
effects. Her basic design approach is to use "waste materials, unskilled labour and local communities".One of the notable buildings
built for her own residence is titled the "Wall House", built in a community area of 15 acres (6.1 ha) with a built in space of 100
square metres (1,100 sq ft) constructed at a cost of one million Rupees in 2000,in Auroville for communal livingThis house is LShaped in plan, has a courtyard in the middle; while it is modern in concept it adopts traditional "vernacular" use of materials such as
compressed earth, concrete and steel. The bathroom is set in open-to-sky design, with smooth merging with the interior and
external spaces and landscaped in manner which gives it both a modern and a regional appearance.
Her practice started in 1990, demonstrates a strong focus
on material research and experimentation towards an
architecture that has low environmental impact and is
appropriate to the socio-economic context. Her work
culture culture is a "research-oriented practice and
practice-oriented teaching."She expresses her design
approach clearly by stating: "My designs are not driven by
J
the worry that the world will end, but by finding ways to
make the most with what one has.
