Office Hours: All Office Hours will be held in Room 215 after school on Tuesday/Thursday for
30 minutes. If you need to meet on another day or time, please email me to set up an appointment.

Course Description:

This is a yearlong course in which students will study the major turning points in American
history during the 20th century. Following a review of the nations beginnings, students will
trace the change in the ethnic composition of American society. Students will learn that the
U.S. has served as a model for other nations and that the rights and freedoms that we enjoy
are not accidents, but the results of a defined set of political principles that are not always basic
to citizens of other countries. The course will follow the framework of the California State
Board of Education Standards. Essentially, this course will assist in your development as critical
thinker to make well informed decisions as a member of society.

Space in your 3-ring binder, note-book or folder

Mobile or home internet access

Instructional Methods:
There will be a variety of methods used for you to accomplish the Course Specific Outcomes.
Student knowledge of objectives will be measured through class discussion, quizzes, tests,
presentations (individual & group), written assignments (class & homework) and other various
methods. **Assignments are subject to change**

Class Expectations:

Cell Phones/Smart Phones are allowed in class during individual or group work time, as
long as it doesnt interfere with completing your assignment(s). Use of Social Media
during class time is prohibited unless Ms. Boye-Doe states that it is necessary for the
classroom activity. Cell Phones/Smart Phones must be turned Silent during class time
and must be stored in your backpacks during tests, quizzes, presentations, and written
assessments. If your use of Cell Phones/Smart Phones is disruptive and/or
inappropriate, after 1 warning, you will lose your Cell Phone/Smart Phone privileges for
at least 1 class period or up to 1 semester.
Bathroom Use is not allowed during the first 10 minutes of class and 15 minutes
before/after break or lunch. Please plan your bathroom visits accordingly.
This classroom is a safe and caring place for all students. For that reason, harassment
against students in class, including harassment based on real or perceived race, color,

weight, national origin, ethnic group, religion, religious practice, disability, sexual
orientation, gender (including gender identity and expression) and sex, is prohibited and
will not be taken lightly. A parent conference and/or disciplinary referral will follow. We
will treat each other with respect, and we will refuse to tolerate bullying in any form.
As long as we are all respectful to one another, there wont be any problems. However,
if students cause disruption in the classroom, a warning, student-teacher conference,
parent-teacher conference, and/or disciplinary referral (in that order) will follow.

Late/Missing Assignments:

You must communicate with me, prior to the due date, if your assignment is going to be
late. Communication can be in the forms of face to face conversation or email. If this is
not done, you will receive a ZERO (0). **

Class Participation:

In order to get participation points students must be present for each and every class. This
includes, but is not limited to, actively participating in discussions, raising hand to answer
questions, being present and alert in class. Participation also includes being prepared for
class with all of the necessary materials to fully participate. Please review the Required
Materials section for complete list of appropriate materials.

Missed Exams:

Missed exams must be made up within the specified time, as directed by Ms. Boye-Doe.
All exams will be administered by Ms. Boye-Doe, unless otherwise directed by Ms. BoyeDoe.

Extra Credit:

Extra Credit options will be available throughout the 2016 2017 school year.
