Module 4
Pre-instructional Activities
In order to change the way a student thinks about Obesity and the eating of
unhealthy foods the module must first motivate the students. To start, the brochure
would contain a quick introduction into the problem, then it would have a picture of
both healthy and unhealthy items. The items in the brochure would provide
relevance, confidence, and inform the learning objectives. Here is a sample of the
Brochure:

What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a disease that effects people of any age group. Diabetes is broken down
into two types:
Type I Diabetes
Body does not produce Insulin
Occurs approximately 10% of the time

Facts
Type II

Diabetes
Body does not produce enough insulin
Occurs approximately 90% of the time
Overweight or obese people are at
higher risk of type II Diabetes
One can of non-diet pop per day can
increase your risk of diabetes by 22%
Higher risk of type II diabetes the older
people become

What does Diabetes have to do with Fast Food?


*Caused an increase of Obesity five-fold in the U.S. Since 1970 due to the increase of
fast food proximity to schools, geographical locations, and advertising*
Fast Food:
1. High concentration of saturated fats
a. Increase of Deep Fried Food
b. Use of Pre-packaged food
2. Increased amounts of Salt
a. Used as a preservative
b. Used on Fries, Meats, eggs, etc. *Strictly Iodized Salt*
3. Increased amounts of Sugar
a. Consumption of Pop

Objectives:
I.1 Learners will reflect individually and record their daily food choices and use these findings to determine the
type of food consumed. Use a daily log to chart the foods that are consumed on a regular basis
II.1 In groups, learners will research and Identify nutritional facts of foods to understand the daily allowances
based on FDA research.
II.2 In groups, learners will create charts to identify healthy choice to maintain proper healthy habits and
lifestyles.
III.1 In groups, the learners will research diseases associated with obesity and develop a list of diseases to be
concerned about with their eating habits.
IV.1 Learners will use their research to evaluate their current health choices to determine whether their choices
are appropriate. From their reflection they will determine what health choices to continue or change to maintain a
healthy lifestyle.

Assessments: To assess the learners knowledge of the objectives, a series of charts (to
show the current and changed eating patterns). Furthermore, students would complete
short answer and essay questions to show what foods a person should consume to maintain
a healthy lifestyle.
Sample of the questions:
1. Analyze and explain your own eating habits. Explain whether your habits are healthy
or unhealthy choices based on your log. Describe where and what you typically ate in
your log.
2. Discuss the diseases that are associated with obesity. What diseases are more likely
to occur if you are deemed to be severely over weight? What diseases does you own
food log show that might occur if you continue your current eating pattern?
3. Create a chart to show what you will use as a guideline to either change your lifestyle
or continue living a healthy lifestyle.

Follow Through: The follow through would consists of two food logs, where the
learners have to show what they are consuming in a single day. Furthermore,
students would have to complete a series of worksheets based on their research.
These worksheets would have the students show and display the proper amounts of
nutrients they are consuming based on their food logs. The purpose is to get the
learners to recognize a pattern of their current daily intake and change what they
are consuming by the end of the module. Furthermore, show the diseases that
could occur if their current pattern of food consumption does not change.

Content:
The content for the unit will consist of the analysis of what people are eating
and how their current nutritional regimen either needs to continue or change
to maintain a healthy lifestyle. With the increase in obesity and the high
levels of food consumption from Fast Food establishments, the learners
will review the required nutritional requirements as stated by the FDA and
medical personnel to change their current eating patterns. The learners will
create a nutritional chart to explain the components that a person should
consume with the appropriate amounts. Moreover, the learners will also
research and discuss various diseases associated with obesity and how these
diseases can change a persons lifestyle in the future, such as diabetes.
Following the understanding of the diseases, the learners must understand
what this does to them financially and the medications that are required to
allow them to function. Therefore, the students are also going to be required
to analysis how obesity effects their family and the time that is lost from
requirements of attending doctor appointments.
