Company Name : PAGASA Synoptic Station
Date of Visit

For personnel who assisted the tour:

Name : Ms. Letty Dispo
Position : Facilitator

Brief Description of the Company

This is where the study and observation of most of the metorological elements occurs
at fixed observation times before transmitted to their Central office. These offices are
maintained and operated by PAGASA and is responsible for the dissemination of public
local weather forecasts, tropical cyclone bulletins, warnings and advisories and other
related information to help people and protect lives and their property.

What happened during the tour?

To summarize the tour, it was just quick and short but then the facilitator took her
best shot to impart knowledge and share an informative discussion to us. Weather and
climate information are two important things people should always be concerned about
and this is greatly affected of the role of PAGASA Sypnoptic Station as its job is to protect
people by informing them regularly on weather conditions or possible climate
disturbances like typhoons and etc. The facilitator shared some of their ways on how they
observe climate and weather using some of their instruments on their office as if they were
just students fond on making laboratory experiments.
Again, the tour was indeed enlightening and helpful though we expected to be familiar
on some of her discussions. The place was also destructing because it was photo-friend if I
may say. To be honest, one of the most fascinating part every discussion on every plant
tour on our stay in Baguio is the photo-op.

What did you learn during the visit?

They regularly observe and measure temperature of the air using the typical
thermometers or meteorological thermometers containing either mercury or alcohol.
Continuous records of air temperature are obtained by the use of thermographs. To make
certain that the thermometer or thermographs assumes the temperature of the air, it is
screened from direct and reflected heat as much as possible by being exposed in a shelter
with louvered sides and open to the wind in all directions. The direction and velocity of air
movement are important elements of weather. Wind vanes and anemometers are used in
observing and recording these elements. Both direction and velocity of wind have a great,
but irregular, variability from day to day, and also show many fluctuations in periods of a
few seconds. The gustiness and turbulence evidenced by these minor variations are due in
large part to irregularities of the surface over which they are moving, but in part to other
causes. Helping people and protecting them from harm like weather calamities and such is
not just a job for people who possesses no concern to their fellow individuals. Its not just
about obligation but their desire to provide reliable and informative weather reports and
broadcasts to serve and protect the people made their job interesting.

Rate your visit from 1-5 and Why?

For me, I would say 3. It is informative but not that it can capture your attention. I
dont know if it was because the facilitator is too serious or because the place where she
had her discussion was small and we have no choice but to stand the whole discussion. On
the otherhand, I really appreciated the way she discussed because I am sure she did her
best though it was just a quick one.

Would you recommend the company to others who will

Yes because the location was great, and the discussion was quick and
informative though it was a bit boring.

What happened during the tour?

The tour was interesting and fun. We have seen their studios where they make their
productions and shoots, and we had an actual experience on how they do their job in being
responsible for airing the shows and commercial on the network. Points for the facilitator
for being funny and kind which made the tour okay. The facilitator showed us on how they
shoot their broadcasting by walking us through their studios and showing off their
lightings and such. He also showed us the room wherein they have various monitors with
different purposes and the equipment and machines they use in operation. They discussed
each including how it functions and how to use it.

What did you learn during the visit?

Through the years, ABS-CBN has delivered the latest news reports, as well as
quality entertainment and current affairs programs, not just to audiences around the
country but also to Filipinos around the world. Behind the news coverage and
entertainment, viewers see on their monitors are technical innovations initiated by ABSCBN engineering group with their state-of-the-art broadcast equipment that is now being
used for remote coverage, pre-production work for news, current affairs and
entertainment. The network relies on digital editing by means of centralized video serves,
which hold all video materials. They have digital server to make their work flow non-linear
in nature, which makes it easier and faster. For instance, they just ingest their material into
the serer, then the workstations can share the footage and do simultaneous editing. While
video editing is done, audio people can clean up the dialogue or put sound effecs or musical
score and even editing theit promotions and banners for plugging. To cut it short, they all
have simultaneous access and therefore, making their work faster.

Brief Description of the Company

MOR Baguio 103.1 MHz is a commercial radio station owned and operated by the
ABS-CBN Broadcating Corporation. One of the 17 My Only Radio FM radio stations of ABSCBN Regional Network Group which was founded July 14, 2001 in the Philippines. A
member of the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP), 103.1 MOR Baguio was

What happened during the tour?

MOR 103.1 Baguio is a part of our tour in ABS-CBN, the said radio station is a property
of the ABS-CBN Corporation. So the tour was just quick and short yet exciting for we had a
glimpse of the working station of the DJ who discussed his job and role to us and how he
uses the equipment on the station. He also imparted some knowledge regarding
broadcasting standards and regulations, how long should they air commercials, OPM
songs, international songs and such. He also shared on how he as a dj do multi-tasking with
the help of the advancement of technology and the labor of their engineering department.
Unfortunately, we didnt see the actual broadcasting show or how the dj hosts the show
because our timing is just wrong.

said organization. MOR was launched on February 17, 2002 in Baguio City and it
broadcasts throughout Northern and Central Luzon and sometimes the signal reaches the
area of Cavite, Rizal, Laguna and Metro Manila through weak signal. Its transmitter is
located on Mt. Sto. Tomas, Tuba, Benguet. I also became aware of the standards they follow
on broadcasting or when they are airing their show, through his brief discussion regarding
the radio etiquette. To act responsibly on air is a part of radio DJs job, because people out
there are listening, listeners may not just be adults but also children at very young ages.
Their audio equipment is just limited due to the fast-paced technology which compressed
everything in a single computer, wherein the DJ wont have a hard time mixing sound
effects and such.

Brief Description of the Company

SKYCABLE was established in January 1990. Commercial cable operations commenced on
January 26, 1992. By the end of the year, 8,500 strand miles of cable were laid out, bringing in 20,000
subscribers by 1995. On October 1, 2015 Sky Cable no longer offered for new subscribers for greater
Manila area however Sky Cable Baguio continuously offered service with the rest of provincial areas
like Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, General Santos and Dumaguete.
Today, over 500,000 subscribers have made SKYCABLE the number one cable TV service
provider in the Philippines. It has grown to feature the best and most varied cable programs for the
whole family. The success of SKYCABLE throughout the years enabled the business to expand and go
beyond just providing postpaid cable TV service. In 2006, the first ever prepaid cable TV service in
the country was introduced, SKYCABLE Silver Prepaid. In 2008, SKYBROADBAND, the fastest
residential broadband internet service in the land, and SKYVOICE, the lowest-priced IDD calling
service, were launched.

What happened during the tour?

The tour was okay, it was divided into two parts. First part is a pure discussion part, wherein the
speaker tackles the operation of Sky Cable Baguio while the second part is the walk-through on their job
environment and facility. The discussion was a bit disappointing because we had it outside their building,
wherein we just stand for almost an hour I think, though it feels longer than that. As what I have observed
while the speaker is discussing, my classmates including me were so sleepy, Im not sure if it was due to the
speakers way of discussing or the tiring feeling of standing and pretending to be listening. It might be
because it was our 4th plant to visit that day and we were just too exhausted for we have woke up so early
that day. Then, the walk-through part was more tiring, and for me, it was because the speaker really talked
with a very minimal speaking voice that only the person infront can hear. But I really appreciated the
company for accommodating us and the speakers for trying to impart their knowledge to us.

What did you learn during the visit?

The television cable industry has become a major service provider by allowing data
transport over upgraded CATV cable networks. The cable industry has had many plans for
delivering unique services to its subscribers. High-resolution digital video has been part of
the plan, as well as TV set-top boxes that provide interactive game interfaces, WebTV, and
other features. Cable data networks make this possible. The traditional CATV system
consists of a shared coaxial cable network that transmits analog television signals to
downstream subscribers. It is estimated that over 100 million homes are reachable by
CATV cable, of which approximately 75 million of those homes are CATV subscribers. The
cable network mimics the over-the-air radio frequency broadcast signals that you would
receive via a TV antennae, but they are carried on cable. Television signals are transmitted
in 6-MHz channels. And lastly, CATV is a shared cable system that uses a tree-and-branch
topology in which multiple households within a neighborhood share the same cable.

I would rate it 3 though the location wherein their radars were stationed was good. It
was interesting but theres something missing, I think the discussion was not that catchy
or its just that we were just exhausted that time.

for the company covered Northern Luzon area so they have a lot of equipment to discuss.

Brief Description of the Company

Loakan (IATA airport code: BAG) is one of the important passenger airports in Baguio,
Philippines. It provides flight connectivity for many destinations . The airport is classified as
a Class 2 principal (minor domestic) airport by the Civil Aviation Authority of the
Philippines (CAAP). Loakan Airport, the city's only airport was built in 1934. The short
runway, frequent low visibility and dilapidated structures along with deep ravines on both
ends of the runway continue to challenge commercial operation at the airport.

What happened during the tour?

The tour was very fun and interesting from the beginning up to the end. The officer-in-charge
gave us a brief talk and discussion regarding the operation on the airport in which he said that they
stopped operating Manila-Baguio or vice versa because they were losing the business, because the
amount expensed is greater than their profit, why? Because a very few people choose to travel on
air. This is due to the fact that it is obviously way expensive than travelling on land which only costs
an individual for about 600 pesos. So, what would the airport get from few passengers which cant
covered even a part of the cost of each of their flight. He discussed things on how they operate and
accommodate travelers during an actual operation and then turned us over on the facilitator or
speaker who is a resident member of their engineering team. The speaker took a brief discussion
regarding navigation and measures how far are we familiar with navigational aids. He introduces
us their equipments and its role in navigation. He then turned us over on a hilarious speaker who
exposed us on their actual job and role on successful navigations, flight operations up to plane
landings on the airport. She also discussed the equipment on that room and how each instrument
functions. I think she was the most fun part of the tour, she had us on her funny wayof talking which
captured our attention and making us interested on how they really function on an actual flight
operation.

What did you learn during the visit?

We discussed navigation and navigational aids in school but we learned more than
we expected on the tour. He discussed the pilotage method of navigation which developed
naturally through time as aircraft evolved with the ability to travel increasingly longer
distances. Flying at low altitudes, pilots used rivers, railroad tracks and other visual
references to guide them from place to place. This method called pilotage is still in use today.
Pilotage is mainly used by pilots of small, low speed aircraft who compare symbols on
aeronautical charts with surface features on the ground in order to navigate. This method
has some obvious disadvantages. Poor visibility caused by inclement weather can prevent a
pilot from seeing the needed landmarks and cause the pilot to become disoriented and
navigate off course. A lack of landmarks when flying over the more remote areas can also
cause a pilot to get lost. On the otherhand, we have these so-called navigational aids which
are instruments that lead to better defined or predictable routes of flight, as well as enhanced
safety at the airport. The introduction of point-to-point navigation systems on aircraft,
coupled with ground transmitting equipment has led to the development of radar navigation
system approaches and departure routes that may be crafted to more consistently overfly
noise-compatible areas than previously used headings or vector routes. A wide array of
equipment may be used to safely navigate through the area along specific flight paths.

What did you learn during the visit?

I learned that the secret to working quickly and efficiency in a radio station is to use
standard procedures. Because DJ Rica shared us some of her job routines, here are some of
what I absorbed: that before a dj key their mic, they should gather first their thoughts about
what they are going to say. Radio DJ must no stutter and should talk clearly for their listeners
to understand every word they say. On the technical part, familiar concepts like transmitter,
receiver, antenna, tansmission lines were some of the vital part of a radio station. Audio
processor to improve and optimize the quality of sound to be broadcast. And nowadays, this
function is undertaken by inexpensive software programs. On the production and studio
equipment, microphone for converting sound waves into electrical energy, amplifiers for low
power signas to be converted to high power, computer softwares for wide variety of
purposes and have replaced several functions previously managed by costly equipment, and
power protection units to supplu power and protect the equipments from unwanted power
fluctuations.

Brief Description of the Company

On October 5, 1973, the Benguet Electric Cooperative, Inc. (BENECO), was organized
and registered as a non-stock, non-profit service-oriented entity and was granted by the
National Electrification Commission the sole franchise to operate an electric light and power
service in the City of Baguio and Benguet province for a period of fifty (50) years.
At the birth of BENECO, only the central portion of the city was being supplied with
electricity by the Asin Mini-Hydro Electric Plants built by the Americans before World War
II while the small portion of the peripheries of the city was supplied by NPC Feeder from
Beckel, La Trinidad substation. The poblacion of La Trinidad, Benguet was lighted by the
Benguet Development Corporation and the small portion of Itogon and Tuba were being
supplied with power by the Rural Power Corporation. These electric systems were taken
over by BENECO in January 1974 by virtue of the provisions of P.D. No. 269.

What happened during the tour?

BENECO was an interesting company to visit, after a brief discussion about company profile

What did you learn during the visit?

To be honest, aside from the discussion regarding company profile, description and
their services, the system they are using really got me listening on the speaker. They are
using SCADA Systems or supervisory control and data acquisition, it is a computer system
for gathering and analyzing real-time data. SCADA systems are used to monitor and control
a plant or equipment in industries such as telecommunications, water and waste control,
energy, oil and gas refining and transporatation. A SCADA system gathers information,
such as where leak on pipeline has occurred, transfers the information back to a central
site, alerting the home station that the leak has occurred, carrying out necessary analysis
and control, such as determining if the leak is critical, and displaying the information in a
logical and organized fashion. SCADA systems can be relatively simple, such as one that
monitors environmental conditions of a small office building, or incredibly complex, such
as a system that monitors all the activity in a nuclear power plant or the activity of a
municipal water system. Lastly, the speaker mentioned that SCADA systems were first used
in 1960s.

Brief Description of the Company

Hedcor is a wholly-owned subsidiary of AboitizPower. It specializes in generating
renewable energy from run-of-river hydropower systems. In May 1978, HEDCOR is
registered with the securities and exchanges commission and built their first hydroelectric
powerplant in Benguet in March 1988.
Today, Hedcor manages and operates 22 hydropower plants and supplies the country
with 185 MW of clean and renewable energy. With more than 30 years of experience, Hedcor
is the leading run-of-river developer in the Philippines.

What happened during the tour?

We were excited before going to HEDCOR maybe because we were expecting some exciting
adventures which started from their reminders of things to bring for the tour. We kind of imagine
things like climbing mountains or trekking maybe. We went on their company first and have some
discussion regarding the company as usual. They introduce us their services and company
operations, they also shared some reminders and guidelines during the tour in order to ensure
safety. The speaker also tried to enlightened us through showing us images of the site in order to
prepare us on what are we to expect and see on the tour. It made us feel excited. After the talk, we
headed on their site which took us slightly longer hours of travelling because of the distance. The
site are what we expected, slightly far from residence area but the way of going to the exact site is
not what we expected. It was easier than what we imagined. It was not that dangerous as it sounds
based on what we experienced. Furthermore, we gathered learning and insights related on their
operation after their crews and engineers gave us brief discussions.

What did you learn during the visit?

I learned how their run-off river scheme operates. This scheme starts with water
being diverted using a non-empounding structure called the weir. From the weir, water
enters a desander, where water sediments settled at the bottom. Then from the desander,
the water is then transported through steel pipes called conveyance line which are
layedout along the contour of the mountains so is not to disturb the surrounding
landscapes. Water drops at a steep angle to another steel pipe known as the penstock. This
penstock leads directly to the powerplant which houses the turbine units and turbines
causing a rotating motion and will convert the hydraulic energy to mechanical energy.
Since turbines are directly coupled to the generators such energy will be converted into
electrical energy. The generators are in turn connected into a substation where the energy
produced is transmitted to the main grid. At the side of the powerplant is the tailraise
where the water that passes through the system is brought back to the river in a much
cleaner state.

Brief Description of the Company

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has the crucial task of delivering safe and
reliable electricity throughout the archipelago. It all started in 2008 when the consortium of Monte Oro Grid
Resources Corporation, Calaca High Power Corporation, and State Grid Corporation of China won the franchise
to operate, maintain, and further expand the power grid in the biggest government auction conducted in efforts
to reform the local power sector.
What was once a government owned and controlled corporation and a spin-off company of National
Power Corporation, NGCP now holds the responsibility of bringing the electricity produced by power plants to
distribution utilities. Though relatively new, NGCP tries to empower the country by building transmission lines
that will traverse and interconnect our major islands so that every household will enjoy the benefits of
electricity. Equipped with technical expertise and a sound financial portfolio, NGCP is on its way to fulfilling its
commitment to the Filipino people: stronger transmission for a stronger nation.

and risks. They gave us brochures to help us understand their companys rule on electricity
distribution in Baguio and its other covered area. And after the seminar inside the hall, they lead
us on our way to their plant behind their building. They have a large powerplant and so they
discussed its elements and parts, including the equipments we saw on the field. After the short tour,
we went back on the hall and proceed to awarding of the certificate of appreciation. The company
also gave us shirts and even prepared snacks and lunch for all of us including our service drivers.

What did you learn during the visit?

I have been enlightened bout the NGCPs role in the operation of the Philippines power grid
and its power transmission business. As system operator of the Philippine power grid, NGCP
balances the supply and demand of electricity to efficiently serve all of its customers power
generators, private distribution utilities, electric cooperatives, government-owned utilities, ecozones, industries, as well as directly-connected companies (BENECO is a customer of NGCP). It is
responsible for putting online the right mix of power plants that generate high-voltage electricity
and transmitting this to the various distribution utilities which, in turn, deliver the electricity at a
lower voltage rating to households and other end-users. NGCP also operates and maintains
metering facilities and provides technical services, particularly system studies, and operation and
maintenance of customer facilities.
The business of electricity starts with electricity itself. From making/generating electricity in
a power plant by huge generators using coal, natural gas, water, steam or wind, then sent to a
transformer after to increase the voltage to push current across long distances. Electricity goes
through high-voltage transmission lines that stretch across the country and reaches substation
where the voltage is lowered so it can be delivered through smaller power lines. Then electricity
travels through distribution lines, where smaller pole-top transformers further reduce the voltage
to make the power safe for household use.

Benguet, Mt. Province, Pangasinan, La Union and portions of Ilocos Sur, Abra and Nueva Vizcaya.

What happened during the tour?

The facilitator gave us a quick discussion introducing the station then left us in 3 groups. The
tour was hard to explained because we spent so much time waiting. After waiting too long, we went
inside with just ourselves and no facilitator. We visited their working stations and saw how they
make radio drama, how they mixed audio and sound effects and how they record voices. But one
of the station there felt like we wanna go home but then no one is instructing us what to do, so we
assumed that they were just busy or the person on that station was just busy but then he keeps
working without talking to us and so one of our groupmates initiated to ask if we can go that time,
and thats when he answered yes. We were so disappointed for waiting too long to wait again. The
tour ended quick after waiting too long, and it was kinda ironic, I know.

The people on the radar station were just like any professional requires certain
instruments to assist them in the conduct of their job. They uses sophisticated instruments
developed through the years. Little by little, due to advances in the science of meteorology
and the advent of more sophisticated instruments, our forecasters are approaching the
threshold where they can forecasts with condence theweather for the following day and
optimistically, a year later. The Philippines is not far behind developed countries in
instrumentations, specially when one speaks of basic weather instruments. They are all the
same the world over with slight differences in construction and gradationas dictated by
geographical requirements.
The temperature is the degree of hotness or coldness of a certain body.In the
Philippines, it is measured in degrees Celsius. In weather forecasting, temperature (actual,
surface and temperatureranges) are important as they give indications, to a certain extent,
of thedevelopment and changes of weather conditions. Temperature change is one of the
principal causes in changes of other basic weather elements. Temperature variations over
lands and oceanresult to a range of weather conditions from the gentlest breeze to the
mostviolent storms. They use thermometer, maximum minimum thermomether, and
thermograph. On the otherhand, pressure or atmospheric pressure on a given surface is the
force exerted by an overlying column of air extending to the outer limit of the atmospheric
per unit area and they use barometer, altimeter, and barograph, to measure atmospheric
pressure.
