8th Grade World History Syllabus

2016-2017
Mr. Crim
Welcome to 8th Grade World History! In this class we will cover a very large body of time and subject
matter. This begins in the Neolithic and Paleolithic ages where men and women practices hunting and gathering
methods and advances quickly to our earliest recorded histories in Mesopotamia, an area now known by country
names like Syria and Iraq. We will cover the Egyptians and the Far East with countries like China and Japan.
We will discuss the five major world religions like Christianity, Islam and Judaism. We will answer questions
like how did Greece influence Rome and how did Rome influence the world then and today?. We will also
explore medieval Europe and answer questions about the Crusade and how it influenced relations with Middle
East then and how it continues to influence those relations today. Sound like a lot to do? Yesyes it is, and
that is why everyone in this class needs to work together and obey the classroom rules so that we have an easy
transition between these subjects and give everyone a chance to absorb the information. Remember that this
class is only the first part of two. You will have the second part of World History when you reach 9th grade and
what you learn here carries over.

Classroom Supplies
Pen/pencil. Please have one of these two items in class.
Three Ring Binder. I suggest at least a 2inch binder. You will be receiving guided notes throughout the
school year and they will always be hole punched.
Loose leaf paper
Color pencils

We will do the occasional drawing and I will supply the paper for that. During the year, there will be
projects that will require some extra supplies, but I will put this information out as the need arises.

I use the Elmore County standard for grading, which is 50% of the students grade comes from daily
work and the other 50% comes from their test grades. There are many types of daily work, but tests only come
in two ways. The most common test will be from a multiple choice test. These tests are graded via zip grade
and are usually put into iNow on the same day or the next day. The other test grade may come from our
writings on primary source documents. Every multiple choice test is reviewed before the test day, usually two
days in advance, though this is not always the case and it is not uncommon to have a review one day before a
test. Assignments for the class will be placed in the bin by period number. The bin is located on the table
under the window.
A note about exams. At the end of both semesters, you will have an exam. Exams count 10% of
your total grade. That is enough to move your grade 10 full points, which equates to a full letter grade.
The exams are based off of your previous test notes. Therefore, it is VERY important that you do not
throw away any of the notes you are given. You may throw them away at the end of the semester after

the exam, but not until then. I will not provide extra sets of notes because you threw yours away. If this
happens, you will need to quickly replace them by asking classmatesmy advice would be to be nice to
everyone, because you never know when youre going to need a friend that wasnt previously a friend.

Classroom Rules
This is a very short list of basic rules. There is a complete list of rules that will be handed out, signed
and turned in as part of a classroom contract.
1. Be respectful- This means to everyone and everything
2. Be prepared for class- This means come to class on time and ready to learn/work.
3. Be accountable- this means for your own work and actions in class
PROCEDURAL KNOWLEDGE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course the student will have:

- Improved his/her communication skills in both oral and written.


- Developed skills n especially opinion formulation and critical thinking n necessary for citizenship
in a democracy
- Enhanced his/her ability to work as a contributing member of a cooperative group
- Developed the ability to analyze, interpret and synthesize primary documents
STUDENT EXPECTATIONS: To ensure success in this course the student must:
- Keep up with all work assigned and make up any work that is missing. It is your responsibility to
complete missed work!
- Study and go over notes or readings every night
- Participate and voice his/her constructive opinion during classroom discussions, debates and
lectures
- Attend class every day and be on time.
- Seek extra help if there are any problems with the material covered in class. I am more than willing
to assist you!
- Come to class prepared and ready to work
- Respect school property, fellow peers and yourself
- Talking with another student during a test will result in an automatic zero for that assessment.
