Grade 3/4

Topic: Fractions
Week 8

AusVELS:
Grade 3:
Model and represent unit fractions including 1/2, 1/4, 1/3, 1/5 and their multiples to a complete whole
Grade 4:
Investigate equivalent fractions used in contexts.
Count by quarters halves and thirds, including with mixed numerals. Locate and represent these fractions on
a number line.
Recognise that the place value system can be extended to tenths and hundredths. Make connections
between fractions and decimal notation.
LESSON

Lesson aim
1- Pre test We are showing
all that we know
about fractions
already.

INTRO

Pre assessmentstudents are given

a fraction and they
must list
everything they
know about that
fraction. Can
include diagram,
putting it on a
number line,
equivalent
fractions, word

MAIN FOCUS

Students complete
their fractions poster.

REFLECTION/ASSESSM
ENT
Diagnostic
Assessment:
Mark students against a
rubric which lists all of
the information they
could have included
about their fraction

Definition of
numerator and

Demonstrate with
masking tape on floor or
on board. Start with a
half and get students to
determine numerator
and denominator. Go into
quarters and eighths.

What strategies did you
use?

Students complete
differentiated Roll
and colour sheets.
They must roll the
dice to find out how
much of the shape
they are required to
colour in, and fill in
the corresponding
numerator/denomina

Each student has 8

different coloured strips of
paper. Make a fraction wall
by cutting strips up and
pasting down in order
breaking down a whole. 3s

Discuss a strategy you

used today
Formative
Assessment:
Conference with students
during activity to gauge
their understandings.
Move students up or
down a group to a
different activity if they
are struggling or have
completed it once.

Discuss- what were some

strategies you used to
help you make your
fraction wall?
