I.

OBJECTIVES:
To test a junction diode and measure the effects when it is on forward or
reverse bias condition.

II.

MATERIALS:
1 Variable power supply
1 Digital tester
1 2 WATT, 200 ohms resistor
1 1N4001 Silicon diode

III.

PROCEDURE:
1. Set the supply letting the voltage V to be 0 Volt. Increase the voltage
from 0.1 Volt steps to maximum of 0.8 Volts. Measure and record the
current, if any. Also compute for the forward resistance of the diode.
2. Reverse the diode. Like on forward biased circuit, measure the current
and record, if any with the power supply varying in steps from 0 40
Volts. Again for each conditions, compute for the reverse resistance of
the diode.
3. Remove the diode from the circuit. Measure the forward and reverse
resistance of the diode. Record the results and compute the resistance
ratio, r, of this diode.

2. Under what condition will a junction diode turn on? Refer to your
measurements in Table 1.2.
- When the diode was turned on and it is on the forward bias, the data
gives us the reading of current flowing, a flow of the current means
that the circuit is on.
3. Explain how (a) forward-bias, (b) reverse-bias conditions may be
established. Referring to your experiment, explain also how the
resulting current is affected.
- When the current flow is on forward bias, there is a computable
current because there is a reading on the gathered data.
- While on reversed bias, it is blocking the normal current flow. The
position of the bias is based on the positive and negative side of the
source of voltage.
4. What portion, at the volt-ampere characteristic curve of the forwardbias diode is linear?
- When it is graph the voltage vs current when the diode is forward
biased, it will give a linear result.

5. What is the effect of the DC resistance of the diode over this linear
portion?
- It somehow reduces the current flow, maybe because of its internal
resistance.

6. Compare the characteristics of silicon and a germanium diode and

determine which is preferred to use for practical application.
- Silicone diodes have a forward voltage of approximately 0.7 volts
while germanium diodes have a forward voltage of approximately 0.3
volts. The best for application is the forward voltage.
7. What is the significance, if any, of the resistance ratio of a diode?
- The significance gives changes to the flow of current given that the
diode must provide perfect flow when forward and infinite resistance,
when reversed it cant be achieved because there are limitations in this
diodes.
VI.

CONCLUSION:
I conclude that the effect of diode was based on how it is installed in the
system, when it is forward bias, a continuous current gives a reading, while when
in reversed, and there is no current that would read. In this experiment, we can
now measure the effect of forward and reverse diode for our future reference as a
student.
