National Night Out

By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
The township committee was
given an update that the 2016-2017
tax rate has been set for Shamong
Township.
Total taxes for the average assessed home valued at just less
than $308,000 will increase $197.74
this year.
According to Township Administrator Sue Onorato, the township as well as the Lenape Regional High School District and the
Shamong Township Schools all
sent in their tax information on
time. However, there was a delay
this year on the countys end. The
county didnt officially set the
township tax rate until a week before.
Usually what happens is there
is some element (causing delay).
We had our taxes in on time,
Lenape and the school district;
the county was the delay this
year, Onorato said.
There is a 6.5-cent increase,
making the average assessed
home pay $8,432.71 a year in total

After 25-day extension, taxes

will be due by end of month

property taxes
Onorato said typically the due
date for taxes is Aug. 1. However,
due to the delay, taxpayers have a
25-day extension after the bills
have been sent. She said hopefully by the end of last week, all
mailing should be sent.
Once everything is sent, the
township will update the website
and an email will be sent to residents to remind them of the 25day extension.
Although the extension is good
news to residents, Onorato wanted to remind residents that anything received after the 25 days
will acquire interest beginning
back to Aug. 1.
In other news:
Addison Bradley gave an update on the cemetery initiative
the township has been looking
into. According to Bradley, the
committee has investigated the
feasibility of developing a cemetery in Shamong. A subcommittee has been created. It has reviewed a certificate of authority,
and it is working on submitting
one to the state board for review.
We are in the process of putting that together right now,

Bradley said.
For the cemetery, the township
has purchased the former Cowperthwaite farm, minus the residence, and will be using Green
Acres funds for most of it, according to a letter from former Mayor
Ken Long. There is approximately seven acres on Willow Grove
Road surrounded by hedgerows
that is perfect for a country setting oriented cemetery. This initiative will serve the residents of
Shamong and the surrounding
municipalities and will generate
revenue to help keep taxes in
place and maybe even lowered for
many years.
Bradley said the proposed
name
could
possibly
be
Pinelands Memorial Park, a
Country Cemetery.
Weve had a lot of discussion
on it, and just in my experience
you cant find a country ceme-

tery, Bradley said. I encourage

the committee to advertise that it
is a quiet country cemetery; that
is why a lot of people move out
here because it is quiet and it is
nice.
The committee approved a social affairs permit for Semper
Fido, Inc. for Sept. 17 and 18. According to Onorato, the event will
raise money for the military with
a beer garden at the Valenzano
Winery. The Semper Fido program helps to unite wounded
warriors suffering with PTSD
with homeless, rescue shelter
dogs, who are evaluated and
deemed viable, to nurture a healing and rejuvenating bond between the two.
The next township committee
meeting is Sept. 6 at 7:30 p.m. at
the Shamong Township Municipal Building, 105 Willow Grove
Road.

Sheriff asks for school supply donations

Burlington County Sheriff
Jean Stanfield is asking for public
assistance in collecting school
supplies for Burlington County
children in need.
A childs ability to
succeed in school
should not be deterred
by a lack of necessary
resources. We are asking our
communities to extend their generosity so that we can ensure that
all children in Burlington County
return to school with the materials they require, Stanfield stated.
The Sheriff s Department will
be coordinating with the Burlington County Library, the Tabernacle Baptist Church and other
local organizations to collect and
distribute items such as backpacks, three-ring binders, notebooks, writing utensils and
much, much more.
I think our county works best
and benefits the most when we all
come together to support and
care for one another, Stanfield
continued. When our residents
donate school supplies, they are
not only offering immediate help,
but are also providing those students with the opportunity to advance their education.
The donation drive will run
through Aug. 10 with collection
boxes in county buildings, at the
Burlington County Library Main
Branch and at the Burlington
County
Library
Evesham
Branch.

YMCA hosts final Swim Safe

YMCA
Continued from page 7
course materials for initial participants in the new EMS training
courses as the program rolls out.
This amounts to a $200 scholarship for many of our brave and
dedicated
first
responders,
OBrien said. We hope that this
new and exciting initiative will
lead even more of our residents
to consider serving our community as emergency medical personnel.

YMCA holding final Swim

Safe program Aug. 21
Looking to keep your child safe
in and around the water this summer? The YMCA of Burlington
and Camden Counties is holding
its final summer Swim Safe a
free program for children ages 6
to 12 on Sunday, Aug. 21 from 9
a.m. to noon at the Burlington-

Riverfront YMCA pool located at

302 Commerce Square Blvd. in
Burlington. YMCA membership
is not required for this program.
Swim Safe prepares children
by teaching basic swimming and
water safety skills and increasing
self-confidence and security
while near the water. Swim Safe
is being supported by the Rotary
Clubs of Bordentown, MedfordVincentown, Mt. Laurel and Willingboro.
Learning to swim is not only a
great way for kids to stay healthy
its also a critical safety skill. We
encourage area children to take
advantage of this free program,
said Tim Kerrihard, president
and CEO of the YMCA of
Burlington and Camden Counties.
According to the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention,
every day about 10 people die
from drowning. Of these, two are
children aged 14 or younger. The
CDC further reports that drowning ranks fifth among the leading

causes of unintentional injury

death in the United States.
To register, visit www.ymcabc.org or call Megan Neckelmann
at (856) 231-9622 ext. 305.

chased in advance, either online
at www.SJLandWater.org/EventDirectory or by mailing a check
to SJLWTs office at 21 Main St.,

Auburn, N.J. 08085.

This event serves as a celebration of autumn, as well as a
fundraiser for the South Jersey
Land & Water Trust, a nonprofit
that works to preserve and protect the natural, cultural and historic treasures in South Jersey.
This is done through monthly

Community Cleanups and Walks

in the Woods, as well as through
advocacy and education on a local

There are many opportunities
to get involved with SJLWT, and
several events each month to get
outdoors. Visit www.SJLandWater.org for more information.

CORRECTION
The following is a correction in
an article entitled A life-saving
maneuver printed on Aug. 3-9:
In the article it stated, Jen
made sure to note no adults were
within the immediate vicinity
and the cafeteria was very crowded, so she finds no fault in the

adults.
Jen felt this could be misinterpreted and added more detail
from her son.
The new paragraph, reflected
in the online article, states, It
happened so fast and the boys
went back to eating right away

like nothing happened. The cafeteria was very crowded and

though Steves trainer was at the
table in front of him handing out
pizza, Grant jumped into action
before any adults were notified,
so Jen finds no fault in the
adults.
