Essential Question:

Time Frame: 60-90 minutes

How will modeling with equal groups help us in understanding multiplication situations?

Overview:
Students will continue developing their understanding of modeling equal groups with
multiplication. Students need to be given a variety of mathematical strategies to deepen their
understanding of math in general. This lesson provides the students with a hands on, tactile
opportunity to develop their understanding. They will be given the opportunity to play a partner
game in order to work on their multiplication facts.

Materials:

Stripes & Stars Booklets

Large Index Cards
Pencil or Crayons
Dice
Math Journal
Counters (optional)

Key Vocabulary:

Multiplication
Equal Groups

TEACHING PLANS
Introduction
The teacher will explain to the students that they will be playing a game with a partner today.
Review the key vocabulary.

Essential Question:
Time Frame: 60-90 minutes
How will modeling with equal groups help us in understanding multiplication situations?
Ask students if they know that you can play games to practice Multiplication?

Task
1. Model for the class how to play the game. Roll 1 die and whichever number lands will
be the amount of stripes (these should be rectangular figures).
2. Next, roll the second dice and the total number on the dice is the amount of stars that go
inside each stripe.
Example: If dice one is a 3, then 3 rectangles should be drawn in their index card
booklet. If dice two is a 2, then 2 stars should be drawn inside each stripe.

3. Then, have students right a multiplication equation to represent their answer.

Example: 3 X 2 = 6
4. Last, right the total at the bottom of their page and circle it.
5. Continue with steps 1-4 until at least 10 pages are complete, taking turns each time.
6. At the end of 10 pages, ask the students to use a calculator to add up all of their totals.
The student will the highest total products wins the game.
7. Each student will choose one page from their booklet & write a multiplication story in
their math journal.

Wrap Up
SHARE: Each student will share their multiplication story with their partner.
DISCUSS:

Essential Question:
Time Frame: 60-90 minutes
How will modeling with equal groups help us in understanding multiplication situations?

Students will discuss with each other if their story is asking for multiplication or

something other than that.

Each partner will show how to solve their partners story showing a different

representation. For example: they might choose to show an array or a number line.
Have 3-5 students share back with the class their model they created based on their

partners word problem.

The teacher should guide the questions when necessary.
