Howard University officials have announced their interest
in purchasing 62 acres of prime real estate that will be vacated
by the Walter Reed Army Medical Center once it consolidates
with the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., in
September 2011.
The university’s interest has been spawned by the need to
expand its own hospital, which is located in close proximity
to WRAMC in Northwest Washington; and, if the acquisition
comes to fruition, HU is poised to construct a new hospital and
campus to the tune of $1.1 billion.
“[The land in question] is a huge site and that was part
of [the federal government’s 2005] Base Realignment and
Closure,” said Mary-Margaret Plumridge, spokeswoman for
the District of Columbia’s Office for Planning and Economic
Development.

Receives Award
San Antonio, Texas - Senior Airman Lenton Luss of
Springfield, Va., who fought in Iraq in 2009 was honored
with the Elizabeth N. Jacobson Award for Expeditionary
Excellence for courage under fire. This honor recognizes
the war fighting contributions and outstanding
accomplishments of the military’s youngest warriors. The
ceremony was held at the Gateway Club on Lackland Air
Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, recently.
The moving ceremony was presided over by Lt.
Gen. Loren M. Reno, deputy chief of staff for Logistics,
Installations and Mission Support at the U.S. Air Force’s
Washington, D.C. headquarters; and Brig. Gen. Jimmy E.
McMillian, director of Security Forces.
Luss was hailed for acts of valor, including: being lead
convoy driver for 250 combat missions; being a checkpoint
supervisor at five election sites, thus helping ensure a 55
percent Iraqi voter turnout and security of election ballots;
preserving crime scenes and training Iraqi police officers
Luss’ accomplishment was celebrated by 200 fellow
airmen, Air Force brass and others including his proud
parents Jerry and Rhonda Luss.
Following the presentation of the award, Brig. Gen.
McMillian surprised Luss by promoting him to staff

Like It Or Not, We Will Have To Wait
And See On Kagan
The nation waits with
anticipation for the scheduled
hearings on the nomination
of Solicitor General Elena
Kagan to the United States
Supreme Court Justice. Kagan
is President Barack Obama’s
choice to replace retiring
Associate Justice John Paul
Stevens.
Last week Senate Judiciary
Committee Chairman Patrick
Leahy, D-Vt., announced that
Kagan’s confirmation hearings
would start on June 28. The
José Felipé Anderson speculation has already started
about how those hearings will
proceed and what questions Kagan’s opponents will pose.
I was in the Supreme Court with a group of my law students
from the University of Baltimore on April 28 when Justice
Stevens heard arguments for the last time—it’s something
of a tradition to witness a retiring justice’s last appearance.
Kagan was also present; she was friendly and relaxed as she
chatted with lawyers in the section reserved for members of
the Supreme Court Bar. Kagan’s nomination had yet to be
announced at that time but there was little surprise when she
was later tapped as the president’s choice.
Her appointment as solicitor general alone would have been
enough to place her on the public “short list” as a possible
Supreme Court nominee. It had been enough for her former
boss, Baltimore native and civil rights legend Thurgood
Marshall (for whom Kagan clerked in the 1980s), who’d taken
the same job just before he was appointed as the nation’s first
African American to serve on the Supreme Court by President
Lyndon B. Johnson. As solicitor general, Kagan represents the
legal position of the United States before the high court. She
has served in that position for about a year.
Kagan’s close association with President Obama when they

were both on the faculty at the University of Chicago
was also a clue to her candidacy. Further, her close
association and judicial clerkship with Obama’s mentor,
former Chicago federal Judge Abner Mikva, marked her
as a front runner for any potential opening on the court
during Obama’s tenure as president.
One point being discussed in the media is that since
Kagan has never been a judge she has no record of
opinions to review for insight into her potential judicial
views. She is the first nominee to the Supreme Court
since 1972 that has no judicial experience. Therefore,
her opponents will examine the records of her scholarly
writings and speeches for clues to what kind of
decisions she would make.

Henrietta Lacks’ Legacy

On August 2, I will spend
a few moments remembering
Henrietta Lacks on what would
have been her 90th birthday.
Largely unknown to this day,
she was a Black woman from
our community who helped to
change the world.
Born in rural Virginia,
Henrietta and her husband,
David, were building a life for
themselves in the Baltimore
County community of Turner
Station when Henrietta
succumbed to cancer in 1951,
Elijah E. Cummings despite receiving the limited
treatment available at that time.
Unknown to either Henrietta or her family, a sampling
of Henrietta’s cancer cells were turned over to medical
researchers. Therein, lies both the core of her contribution to
the survival of millions and the source of heated controversies
that rage to this day.
Ms. Rebecca Skloot described the continuing importance of
Henrietta’s contribution in her April 2000, article in The Johns
Hopkins Magazine (and her more recent book, released this
year, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks).
The cancer cells from Henrietta’s dying body were unique.
They were able to survive and replicate outside of her body –
the first time that this ability had ever been observed.
As Ms. Skloot describes the event, “Henrietta Lacks’ cells
multiplied like nothing anyone had seen. They latched to the
sides of test tubes, consumed the medium around them, and
within days, the thin film of cells grew thicker and thicker.”
It was in this way that Henrietta Lacks, a Black woman of
modest means, gained a measure of physical immortality.
The positive impact for humanity has been substantial. Her
prolific cells were essential in the development of the polio
vaccine – and, for the last six decades, the famous “HeLa”
line of cells has been instrumental in moving critical medical
research forward toward improved treatment of cancer, AIDS,
the effects of radiation and many other threats to human life.
That is to say, the cell line has become famous, not the
woman who provided it – a disparity that is not right.
The facts confirm that Henrietta Lacks was never asked for
– nor gave – her informed consent for the use of her cells. She
has not received adequate public recognition for the gift that
she bequeathed to humanity (although I understand that serious
consideration is being given to a local initiative to set the record
straight, an action with which I wholeheartedly agree).
Her family has received no financial compensation from
the billion dollar research industry that her cells helped to
create and sustain. In fact, many of her family members have
been unable to afford the medical insurance that would give
them better access to treatments that exist today because of
Henrietta’s living legacy.
If all of this seems unfair to some, I would have to agree.
Still, most commentators acknowledge that no laws were
broken at the time.
The laws today guaranteeing informed consent have become
far more protective during the last six decades – in part because
of Henrietta Lacks’ life story.
Where the issue of compensation (financial and otherwise)
to donors for the benefits derived by others is concerned,
however, decisions like those of the U.S. Supreme Court
in Diamond v. Chakrabarty (1989) and the 1990 California
Supreme Court case of More v. Regents offer little support.
Current law recognizes property rights (and patenting) with
respect to organisms “that represent the product of human
ingenuity,” not those (like Henrietta Lacks’) that are “naturally
occurring.”
We all can appreciate the distinction. Human cell donations
are critical to advancing our struggle against cancer, AIDS and
the other diseases – research that must not be hindered.
This, however, should not be the end of our discussion
where the ethics of medical research are concerned – and I
believe that President Obama agrees.
“As our nation invests in science and innovation and pursues
advances in biomedical research and health care,” he observed
when he created his Commission for the Study of Bioethical
Issues, “it’s imperative that we do so in a responsible manner.”
The fair compensation of cell donors and others who contribute
to medical research should be at the top of the Commission’s
agenda. Justice should also be part of Henrietta Lacks’ legacy.

Memorial Day
Events held across the
nation this Memorial Day
will find many Americans
gathering to remember our
war dead, paying homage to
their sacrifice, service and
courage, and recalling the
selflessness that embodies
military service. Around the
world, our allies and foreign
friends will pay their respects
by visiting our nation’s
many cemeteries abroad.
Here at home, millions will
pay their respects at the 128
national cemeteries that
serve as the final resting
places of our nation’s most
courageous citizens. Maj.
Gen. Mark Graham recently
told a group of mental health
professionals gathered at
the Baltimore VA Medical
Center at an annual suicide
prevention conference, “We
are free because of the brave
who across generations have
answered the call to duty.”
The latest generation of
American veterans is engaged
in a struggle no less critical
to history than those of their
predecessors as evident by
recent events in New York’s
Time Square. Young men and
women are returning daily
from Iraq and Afghanistan.
Most return to joyous
reunions with loved ones and
revel in the collective sigh of
relief that marks a safe return.
Others return with visible
and invisible wounds, tragic
hallmarks of armed conflict,
while still others return
in solemn, eternal repose,
beneath a draped American
flag. We can’t express enough
gratitude to their grieving
families, but we can stand
with them and honor their
sacrifice and loss.
I am indescribably
proud of the employees
and volunteers at the VA
Maryland Health Care
System and the service they
provide to this newest Veteran
community. The value and
importance of their work is
evident daily in the faces
of the veterans we serve, in
their gritty determination of
undergoing rehabilitative
therapy for both visible and
invisible wounds at one of
our VA medical centers or
outpatient clinics across the
state. Those determined faces
serve as inspiration for all of
us working with Veterans to
live up to Abraham Lincoln’s
promise, “to care for him who
has borne the battle.”
This is why we pause
and remember Memorial
Day – this year, every year.
We remember those who
have paid the ultimate
price for America and all
humanity, and we reflect on
the achievements wrought by
their sacrifice. Life and liberty
are God-given rights, but
throughout history, the task
of defending these high ideals
has fallen to ordinary men
and women of extraordinary
courage and fortitude. They
are our neighbors, our friends,
our family members.
Their perseverance and
loyalty to a higher calling is
central to what and whom
we honor each Memorial
Day. Let’s remember those
who have fallen and the
immeasurable good for which
they have laid down their
lives. And let’s remember our
wounded warriors of every
age who continue on, despite
the loss of their brothers and
sisters in arms.
We must continue
educating our youngsters
about the price that has been
and continues to be paid for
their freedom. Taking them on
a trip to a veterans’ cemetery
or to any local VA medical
center and outpatient clinics
are good places to start.

In honor of a new exhibition celebrating New York’s famed Apollo Theater, Photos by Rob Roberts
Marcella and Terry Jones, along with Alfred Liggins, president/CEO of
Radio One and an Apollo Theater Foundation board member, co-hosted a
reception at the W Hotel.
The event, which honored the theater’s 75th anniversary, included
special guests Cathy Hughes, founder/chairwoman of the board, Radio
One; actress Leslie Uggams, Jonelle Procope, president/CEO, Apollo
Theater Foundation and Dr. Johnnetta Betsch Cole, director, Smithsonian
National Museum of African Art. This exhibition explores the Apollo
Theater’s seminal impact on American entertainment and will be on
display through Aug. 29.

Chef competition offers unique dining experience

BALTIMORE — “Whose
cuisine will reign supreme?”
Thirty-two area chefs will
vie to answer that question
over the next few months
in the Mason Dixon Master
Chef Tournament, a unique
addition to the area’s summer
entertainment lineup.
“Good friendly
competition is very important
[for chefs] whether in small-
town USA, where you’re
competing for the cherry
pie recipe of the year at the
annual homecoming parade,
or you have a multi-city,
multi-chef competition like
this one. It pushes us to do
better,” said chef, Damon
Hersh, an emcee and judge
for the tournament.
Drawing on the mounting
popularity of television
cooking shows such as
Bravo’s “Top Chef” and
Food Network’s “Iron Chef
America,” the 16-week cook-
off launched May 10, offering
a welcome alternative to the
usual Mother’s Day fare.
Karen Folkart, chief
operations officer of the
event, said while those
network shows make for
good viewing, experiencing
the competition firsthand—
along with a four-course
dinner—is better.
“It’s great to watch those
shows on TV, but you can’t
talk to the chefs, see what
they’re doing and smell the
food,” she told the AFRO .
“Not since Lucy and
Ricky Ricardo did dinner
and a show have we done
something like this,” said
Hersh. “It’s fun and it’s
different.”
And it’s also a way of
giving back, he added. Ten
percent of the tournament’s
ticket sales will go to
Moveable Feast, a local
nonprofit founded two
decades ago to feed HIV/
AIDS patients who were shut
in.
“Twenty years ago nobody
was doing that because there
was such a stigma attached to
it (the disease),” said Hersh,
who is the executive chef of
the organization.
Since then, the group’s
mission has grown,
distributing 500,000
meals a year to “people in
crisis”—95 percent African
American—including those
with acute renal failure,
breast cancer and end-state
diabetes; ex-felons in the
midst of rehabilitation and the
homeless.
For the chefs involved,
the competition offers not
only the potential of bragging
rights but also the chance
to see what their peers are
doing.
“I’m absolutely excited,”
said David Thomas, a chef of
18 years and executive chef at

“Maryland is putting some
people out there for people to
take notice of.”

Last week was one of the most glamorous weeks in
Washington with star-studded concerts and the much talked
about White House State Dinner. If you missed any of the
fun, let’s catch you up:
In honor of Mexican President Felipe Calderon and his
wife Margarita Zavala, the White House rolled out the red
carpet last week for their second state dinner.
Celebrities like Whoopi Goldberg, Gayle King and
Olympian Shani Davis attended the dinner as well as politicos
and Washingtonians. The dinner also included a performance
by R&B mega-star Beyoncé. She was spotted with her band
at the W Hotel hours before her performance on the South
Lawn of the White House. DC Fab! Exposed also learned that
Jay-Z was spotted at the dinner as well.
Still, the White House State Dinner wasn’t the only event
to roll out the red carpet last week. At the Ritz Carlton Hotel,
Angela Bassett, Dan Rather, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee and Dr.
Bernice King were among the notables honored by the U.S.
Dream Academy. Founded by Wintley Phipps, a Grammy-
nominated vocal artist, the U.S. Dream Academy holds after-
school programs for underprivileged youth who are most at-
risk of future incarceration. Hosted by ABC 7 anchor Cynne
Simpson and comedian Chris Tucker, the evening honored
celebrities, politicians and business leaders who make it
possible for children to continue to dream.
And although Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee’s mother passed
away last week, she was still on hand to accept her award for
political leadership.
Other Washington notables in the audience included
former Washington Redskin Lavar Arrington and
Congressional Black Caucus Foundation President Elsie
Scott.
Charles “Roc” Dutton gave a heart warming keynote
address, telling guests how he turned his life around from
being in jail. “Roc” discovered acting and drama while
incarcerated saying, “If I didn’t follow through with acting all
the way to the end, I would’ve been in and out of prison for
the rest of my life.”
NBA player Shaquille O’Neal was also in town last
weekend. He dined at Oya on Saturday and Sunday night.
On Saturday, he arrived with two women and a man (a
double date perhaps?) while on Sunday he dined with his
cousin. And across town, former NFLer Jerry Rice was
spotted having a solo drink at Mie N Yu in Georgetown.
This comes days after Rice ended his quest to become a
professional golfer.
R&B singer Bobby Valentino performed at Hogates on
the Waterfront during THE SOURCE’s “Digital Dime Piece”
Swimsuit Competition.
The evening was hosted by Angel Lola Luv and included
appearances by reality show personality Autumn Joi.

Harlem Quartet: An Inspiration in Four Parts

While many entertainment
industry hopefuls are
hitchhiking cross country for
“American Idol” auditions
or dreaming of stardom on
reality TV shows, a group of
young Latino and African-
American musicians are
taking a decidedly different
route to fame.

Miguel Hernandez, Ilmar
Gavilan and Melissa White,
members of classical music
ensemble Harlem Quartet,
look the part of pop music
prodigies. But onstage, the
foursome deftly executes the
complex cadences of lofty
classical composers with the
passion of soul artists.
Formed in 2006, the
quartet has performed with
legendary artist Itzhak
Perlman and appeared twice
at the White House.
Unlike many of their
peers, all four musicians
have spent years perfecting
their craft and learning the
complexities of classical, jazz
and Latin music.
For Hernandez, chamber
music has always trumped
other genres and he has long
fostered an innate preference
for string ensembles.
“I grew up listening
to new age and world
music around my mom and
Latin music around my dad.
But somehow, as I became a
teenager all I wanted to listen
to was classical music,” said
Hernandez, who was raised
in Canada. “Although all my
friends at school listened to
popular music — rock, rap,
hip-hop — I never really had
an interest and still to this day
am quite uninformed about
those genres. This being said,
I do like listening to jazz,
but this is a relative, a cousin
to classical music in my
opinion.”
Hernandez, the first and
second prize winner in the
National Canadian Music
Competitions, has studied
with famed violinist Lorand
Fenyves and cellist Laurence
Lesser and is also a member
of the trio Lamoureux-
Hernandez-Pelletier. In 2005
and 2006, he embarked on a
whirlwind tour of Slovenia,
Salzburg, New Mexico, Los
Angeles and Israel.
Similarly, Gavilan has
harbored a keen interest
in classical music since
his childhood in Havana,
Cuba. The recording artist
has imbued the syncopated
rhythms of conga and rumba
— a musical reflection of
Cuba’s African and European
influences — into Harlem
Quartet’s repertoire.
However, Gavilan said
being a musician of color
in a predominately White
venue has not presented any
“significant challenges.”

me an edge rather then a
problem.”
As a solo artist, Gavilan
has performed with the

were engaged in two very
important Maryland battles
simultaneously, the equal pay
for Colored teachers case
that we burgeoning in Anne
Arundel County in 1936 and
the Baltimore County school
desegregation case in 1935.
There were about 40 enclaves
in Baltimore County with
Black residents in 1935, yet
there was no high school for
Black children in the county.
‘Open Up a High School
for Me’
“I had just come out of the
seventh grade and it was time
for us to go to high school,”
recalled 81-year-old Lucille
Scott-Jones from her home
in Edmondson Village in
southwest Baltimore.
However, as Scott-Jones
reflects back to 1935, when
she was Lucille Scott, a
13-year-old Colored girl from
the small Black enclave of
Cowdensville, near Arbutus,
she couldn’t just hop on the
bus to the nearest high school
like her White counterparts.
There were 11 high schools
in Baltimore County, but all
of them were all White. There
was no high school for Black
children in Baltimore County.
“We had to walk about 4
miles from our little village,
from Cowdensville to
Arbutus, to catch the streetcar
to Baltimore,” said Scott-
Jones.
There was another hurdle,
as well. “We had to take a
very rigid test to go to the
city school. If we passed, our
parents didn’t have to pay,”
she remembered.
White children simply
were promoted to high school
upon passing the seventh
grade and they attended the
school closest to their home.
So the NAACP developed
a strategy to take the next
big step toward equality in
education. The plan was for
Lucille Scott and another
seventh-grader, Margaret
Williams (who would
become the actual plaintiff
in the case), who also lived
in Cowdenville, to attempt
to enter the nearest school,
all-White Catonsville High
School. Williams is still
alive, but age and illness have
clouded her mind. However,
Scott-Jones has vivid
memories of her first day at
the school.
“The White children were
yelling at us. But we felt
very proud. We had this nice-
looking lawyer taking us to
school.”
The memory causes her
to giggle like a 13-year-old
schoolgirl again. That lawyer
was Thurgood Marshall, a
young, rising legal star, who
represented the NAACP and
Margaret Williams in an effort
to integrate Catonsville High
School.
“He felt very protective
of us. He had each of us by
the hand and we walked into
the principal’s office,” Scotts-
Jones said.
Marshall did not actually
enter the school with Williams
and Scott, yet for the next
year, he fought mightily on
behalf of the girls and all
Black children.
The 40 or
so Black
communities
scattered
throughout
Baltimore
County
represented
an intricate
maze, creating
a real challenge
for Black high
school-age
children (grades
8 and above)
who were schooled in Baltimore City. Some had to
travel as far as 24 miles to a city high school and many,
unfortunately, never received a high school education at
all.
‘More Power to You, Sir’
Sept. 12, 1935
At about 2:30 that
Thursday afternoon in
Baltimore, Marshall sent off a and Scott were refused

1935. This was the minefield
that had to be negotiated

So, the NAACP had to
strike a precarious balance
between power and patience.
They could not lose the
momentum created by the
Murray victory, but they
couldn’t push White people
too far, too fast.
“The University of
Maryland case is a wedge, but
such a little wedge. And if we
do not remain on the alert and
push the struggle farther with
all our might, even this little
hole will close upon us … and
we must convince the White
people at all times that we are
fighting a defensive fight,”
wrote Houston in The Crisis
magazine, circa 1935.
Sept. 14, 1935
Regarding Marshall’s Sept.
12 letter, Houston responded
brilliantly, laying down a
loose legal blueprint for the
Baltimore County high school
case.
“Since there were two
pupils who applied to the
White high school,” wrote
Houston, “I suggest two
suits: 1 – mandamus to
have the first child admitted
into the White high school;
2 – simultaneous suit for
mandamus by second child to
force the county to afford her
high school facilities.”
Then Houston explained
his reasoning behind the
strategy.
“By filing the two suites
at once, it will be perfectly
clear that our main effort is
to get adequate high school
facilities for Negro children
and that we are in substance
leaving it up to the county
whether it will admit Negro

children to the White school
or provide separate, but equal
high school facilities for the
Negro child,” he wrote.
This distinction would
prove to be pivotal in the
case. Furthermore, the notion
of separate, but equal –the
debate over segregation
or integration – was a
burgeoning firestorm in Black
America and Houston became
one of the most prominent
voices in the dialogue.
“The association
[NAACP] does not intend
to endorse the principle
of segregation, but to fight
segregation by making it so
expensive to the state that
there will be a disposition on
the part of the taxpayer to do
away with it,” stated Houston
in a 1934 memorandum.
Sept. 16, 1935
In general, Marshall
agreed with Houston’s
assessment of the high
school case; however, there
were additional factors
to be weighed. “I do not
believe these suits can be
filed at present because I
have made application to
the state superintendent, and
he has not as yet refused the
application. Then, under
our law, matters concerning
education are referred
first to the county board
of education,” informed
Marshall. “A court of appeals
case of Maryland involving
the establishment of a White
high school was lost because
of failure to refer the matter
to the county board. This will
take time.”

Slum Standoff In Jamaica Over Don’s U.S. Extradition

KINGSTON, Jamaica
(AP) — In a gritty slum, they
are preparing for war. They
are building barricades of
junked cars and sandbags,
making Molotov cocktails
and pitching barbed wire over
power lines.
They are waiting for the
police, who they believe
will come for Christopher
“Dudus” Coke, a 5-foot-4-
inch neighborhood boss that
the U.S. Justice Department
calls one of the world’s most
dangerous drug lords.
At AFRO press time, 27
people had been killed and 31
wounded in a police attack
on the suspected drug lord’s
compound in Kingston, CNN
reported. A Jamaican Defense
force member and 25 civilians
are reportedly among the
dead.
Kingston has been jittery
since Prime Minister Bruce
Golding this week reversed
his long-standing refusal to
extradite Coke to the United
States on drugs and arms-
trafficking charges.
The U.S., Canada and
Britain have issued travel
alerts, warning of possible
violence and unrest, and most
Jamaicans are steering clear of
downtown Kingston entirely.
Dudus’ headquarters,
on the west side of the
city, is the Tivoli Gardens
housing project. Hundreds
of residents, many dressed
in white, marched peacefully
outside a police station
Thursday with signs reading:
“No Dudus, No Jamaica!”

Authorities insist they
won’t be swayed.

are foreseeing, but certainly

Golding had stalled the
request for Coke’s extradition
for nine months with claims
that the United States’
indictment of the reputed
drug trafficker relied on
illegal wiretap evidence.
The prime minister changed
his mind amid growing
public discontent, persistent
questions about his ties to
Coke, and a backlash against
his use of a U.S. lobbying
firm in Washington to urge
authorities to drop the
extradition request.
Golding’s fight against the
extradition strained relations
with the United States, which
questioned the Caribbean
country’s reliability as an ally
in the fight against drugs.
Locally, critics have asked
for Golding’s resignation,
although his Jamaica Labour
Party has continued to back

Ethiopia opposition bloc claims
voter intimidation
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) — Ethiopia’s opposition
said they may contest the results of Sunday’s national election
in court after reports of intimidation and vote-rigging, hoping to
avoid the violent street clashes that marred the last poll and left
nearly 200 dead.
The election in Africa’s third most populous nation is being
closely watched by international observers, and by critics
who say the U.S.-allied ruling party has harassed voters and
challengers.
The poll will likely lead to a new decade of power for Prime
Minister Meles Zenawi, who seized control of the Horn of
Africa country in a 1991 coup.
The largest opposition bloc, Medrek, complained of
intimidation soon after Sunday’s vote began. Spokesman
Negasso Gidada said some of his party’s observers had been
blocked and arrested in northern Ethiopia, and others had been
intimidated in southern Ethiopia.
“We think we may not accept the results,” he said,
emphasizing that the party would settle any election
irregularities by appealing in court.
But Negasso said his party would not refuse to participate
in the government if elected, as some opposition leaders did
in 2005. About 100 opposition politicians and activists who
challenged those results were arrested.
Another opposition candidate, Hailu Shawel, said observers
also had been turned away Sunday in different parts of the
country.
Government spokesman Bereket Simon, however, said he
was not aware of not any election-related problems and when
told by {The Associated Press} of the opposition claims, he
said “this is simply, simply an orchestrated lie.
“If they reject the result before it’s declared, it means they
know how they’ve been accepted,” he said. “They know they
have lost it squarely.”
Negasso said a group of his party’s election observers
were arrested Saturday in Tigray. He also said that his party’s
observers were intimidated in Oromia and Amhara regions, and
that voter cards were denied to eligible opposition voters. He

Nigeria: 6 dead in religion-fueled
violence in Jos
JOS, Nigeria (AP) — Witnesses say at least six people have
died in renewed religious violence in central Nigeria between
Christians and Muslims.
Witnesses told The Associated Press that three people died
Sunday when an angry mob filled with young people started
violence in the troubled city of Jos. The identities of the victims
were not immediately known.
Authorities say that comes after an attack Saturday that left
three Muslims cattle herders dead.
Jos has been the epicenter of religious violence in Nigeria’s
“middle belt,” where dozens of ethnic groups vie for control of
fertile lands.
Politics, jobs and land often motivate violence that falls
along religious lines. More than 500 people have died in the
violence there since the beginning of the year.
Mubarak, Kenyan premier review
Nile River issues
CAIRO (AP) — Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak has
discussed a lingering crisis over sharing the waters of the Nile
River with the visiting prime Minster of Kenya.
Egypt says it is carefully weighing its response to a new
agreement signed by five upriver countries which could affect
its current majority share of the river’s waters.
Egypt’s Middle East News Agency says Mubarak and Raila
Odinga on Sunday reviewed cooperation between Egypt and
other Nile basin countries “in irrigation and agriculture.”
Egypt initially shunned the framework agreement signed
this month by Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania
because it fails to protect what it calls its “historic” water
rights.
A 1929 colonial-era treaty gives Egypt majority rights to the
Nile’s waters.
Nigeria: Shell lifts crude oil
production warning
LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — Royal Dutch Shell PLC says it
has lifted a crude oil production shortfall warning after making
repairs to damaged pipelines in Nigeria’s restive southern delta.
Shell had issued a statement saying the fire and leaks on its
subsidiary’s Trans Niger pipeline forced it to declare “force
majeure” on production of Bonny Light oil for May and June.
That meant it was impossible for the oil major to cover the
promised supply from the field.
A Shell spokesman said Saturday that the oil major had
lifted the warning.
The major pipeline runs through the oil-rich Niger Delta.
Shell’s Nigerian subsidiary faces regular attacks there by
militants who have targeted pipelines, kidnapped petroleum
company workers and fought government troops since 2006.
