ABOUT THE ATLANTIC R-SERIES BOILER

The ATLANTIC R-Series year-round
maximum condensing boiler has
two distinct heat exchangers, the
first of developed quality steel
design and the second of high
grade plastic design.

HEATING FLOW
& RETURN

The flue gases leave the first heat

exchanger at temperatures below
90C, and are then extracted
from the second condensing heat
exchanger at temperatures
always below 50C. The
introduction of combustion air
through the condensing
exchanger lowers the flue gas
temperature below dew-point,
hence there is no need for return
water temperature to be low.

BURNER
MAIN HEAT
EXCHANGER

FRESH AIR
CONDENSING
EXCHANGER

The boiler will condense to it's

maximum efficiency even at 82C
flow & 71C return. For
combustion air, at inlet
temperatures below 30C,
efficiencies always exceed 92%.
These conditions apply
throughout the year in the UK.

FLUE GASES
TREATED
CONDENSATE

The lower part of the condensing

exchanger has a condensate
neutralising section built in,
eliminating the need for separate
equipment in the future. The
ATLANTIC R Series boiler
pipework requirements are as
straight forward as a
conventional boiler or a high
efficiency boiler. No special
circuits are required to create
condensing.

SPECIFICATION

The boiler body is made of 3mm thick

quality steel with a water-cooled combustion
chamber. The burner fires horizontally through
the combustion chamber and makes a series
of passes through a horizontal heat
exchanger. The steel boiler is externally
covered with an 80mm layer of rock wool
thermal insulation. Access to the heat
exchanger is through a panel at the front of
the boiler secured by four bolts.
The condensing exchanger is made of
polypropylene and contains a series of
smooth polypropylene heat exchanger tubes.
The bottom of the condensing exchanger has
a section containing limestone granules to
neutralise the condensate.

modulating, high/low and on/off operation
depending on fuel type and model size.
The flue gas fan(s) in each boiler assembly
contain - aerodynamic polypropylene
housing, vibration free mountings, minimum
pressure loss inlet & outlet, totally enclosed
synchronous motor, maintenance free, dust &
water proof bearings, infinitely adjustable fan
motor speed regulator. The number of fans
depends on the boiler model. From the
model R22-15 to the model R22-90 the fan is
mounted within the boiler casing. From
model R22-150 upwards, the multi-fan
assembly is mounted to the rear of the boiler.

PIPEWORK ARRANGEMENTS
Each boiler has its own header with in-built 4-port valve and shunt pump. This guarantees
minimum water flow and temperature control. Single and group boilers can use a
balancing & sedimentation vessel or a low velocity header as a neutral heat outlet.Any
number of circuits, in order of priority, can then be served adequately from the boiler(s)

TYPICAL ONE BOILER

ARRANGEMENT

Domestic Hot
Water Priority

DHW
BALANCING VESSEL

One R22 boiler serves

domestic hot water (priority)
and weather compensated
radiators. The fast-response
indirect cylinder always needs
to receive primary hot water
within 1 or 2 minutes of
demand so it receives priority
from the balancing vessel or
header. The radiators have a
response time of about 20
minutes so they take primary
heat as a second function.
Consequently the indirect
cylinder is served first from the
balancing vessel.

MULTIPLE BOILER ARRANGEMENT

This might be a typical medical centre situation where duty and standby boiler
plant serves sanitary hot water, air conditioning and underfloor space heating.
The ultra-fast response plate heat exchangers need primary heating within a
few seconds, the air conditioning (in mid-winter) needs primary heating within
a few minutes, whereas the underfloor space heating has a much longer
response time. The plate heat exchangers are served first from the balancing
vessel, the air conditioning second and the under-floor heating last.

CONDENSING FLUE ARRANGEMENT

The ATLANTIC R Series boilers
can have either conventional
or balanced flues for diesel
oil, kerosene, natural gas or
LPG.The boiler flue
requirements are economic
often cutting the costs of
material and labour when
compared to other boilers. As
the flue gas exit temperature is
always low, the volume of
gases is always greatly
reduced throughout the year.

Flue gases

In addition, the ATLANTIC R Series boilers have variable speed flue gas extract fans which permit
extensive vertical and horizontal flue ducts in carefully chosen TECHNAFLON condensing flues. The flues
are graded to the boiler(s) to allow the condensate to drain to the tank in the base of each boiler. The
condensate is then treated using limestone marbles before flowing out to a normal drain.
TECHNAFLON condensing flues are precision-made from polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) which is
extremely corrosion-resistant, hard wearing and not effected by ultra-violet radiation. The flues are
installed without insulation. The flue gases cool rapidly, releasing the heat to the building and increasing
the plant efficiency.

BALANCING AND SEDIMENTATION VESSEL

The balancing vessel is located close to the boilers, with its feet placed
on a base to allow the boiler flows and returns to normally vent to the
vessel. One full size cold feed pipe should be taken to the connection
P on the vessel and fitted with a normally open ball valve, allowing
unrestricted heating system expansion and contraction to take place
along the pipe.
Balancing and
Sedimentation
Vessel

The different flow pipes of separate heating circuits should be

connected progressively down the header from the top flow 'A'. The
returns should be connected similarly upwards from the bottom return
'I'. DHW priority flow and return circuits should be taken from and to
the high level W tappings.
When connections are complete and the system is ready for filling.
Firstly everything should be isolated from the vessel. This includes the
boilers (with their shunt pumps) connected to L (flow) and M(return)
and the heating circuits - 'A' and 'I'. - which should be isolated from
the vessel. The vessel air vent V and drain/sludge valve D should
be closed.
The different heating circuits should then be filled separately. As the
circuits are progressively filled, they should be regularly sludged
through the bottom of the vessel by opening the circuit valves and the
drain and sludge valve until the
water clears. This should be

repeated for all the circuits. After

ATLANTIC BOILERS was formed in 1980 to promote highly efficient boilerplant and within two
years had supplied the first commercial gas condensing boilers in the United Kingdom. For
30 years, ATLANTIC BOILERS has supplied both gas and oil condensing boilers to many
Universities, Hotels, Hospitals, Medical and Social Care Buildings, Leisure Centres, Schools,
Offices and Housing Developments plus many other types of buildings. ATLANTIC BOILERS
also supplies condensing and highly efficient domestic hot water generation, based on
stainless steel manufacture.
Coupled with the supply, ATLANTIC BOILERS provides back-up commissioning, spares and
servicing by way of a network of merchants throughout the United Kingdom.
