PROFESSIONAL BEHAVIORS
The following are behaviors, attributes, or characteristics that are not explicitly part of a professions core knowledge and
technical skills, but nevertheless are required for success in that profession. The Occupational Therapy Assistant Program has
adapted ten goal areas of abilities and behaviors related to professionalism that were developed by the faculty of the Physical
Therapy program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
The quality of professional behavior expected of OTA students is exemplified in the following goal areas:
1.
2.
3.
4.
commitment to learning
interpersonal skills
communication skills
effective use of time and
resources
5. use of constructive feedback
6. problem solving
7. professionalism
8. responsibility
9. critical thinking
10.
stress
management
Purpose:
Mastery of these behaviors along with acquisition of the program competencies supports the ability of the student to:
generalize from one context to another
integrate information from different sources
apply knowledge and skills in the practice setting
synthesize cognitive, affective and psychomotor behaviors
interact effectively with clients, families, the community and other professionals
Organize and maintain professional records

PB Form
0 = Unsatisfactory: The student does not demonstrate competence in this area; it cannot be observed by others.
1 = Needs Improvement: The student is beginning to demonstrate some competence but needs to improve in quality,
quantity and consistency; the behavior may be infrequently demonstrated, is only partially developed, or may disappear
when challenged.
2 = Satisfactory: The student is demonstrating acceptable mastery level of competence in this area; the behavior is
typically shown.
3 = Entry Level Competence: The student consistently demonstrates competence and excels in the professional behavior
area; the behavior would be demonstrated by a student ready to go into fieldwork or entry level practice.

I am a visual learner, I do work in a timely manner, although I do stress often and need to work on stress
reflection management. The professional behavior assignment is a great tool to use in getting students where they need to
statement be on a professional level to become OTAs. I prioritize my goal areas by what I want to achieve and how I plan to
achieve it. Maximizing my goal achievement I would put all my effort into that goal and not stop until I reach it. All
goals should be made reachable and reasonable. I believe I mainly need to work on stress management and
critical thinking.
Goal
area(s)
1. I plan to find what stresses me and find a healthy way of coping with stress in the next 3 weeks.
2. Work on critical thinking skills and how to better my work using these skills in the next few weeks.

1. I will implement a new way to cope with stress two-three times a week. Going to the park and taking an hour to
myself.
2. I will turn in all assignments by Saturday three weeks out of the semester to have Sunday to myself to relax and
cope with stress.
