Chapter8EngineExhaustSystems

8.1DesignandConstruction.
8.1.1* Engineexhaustsystemsshallbedesignedandconstructedsuchthatthesystemcan
withstandtheanticipatedexhaustgastemperatures.
8.1.2* Exhaustsystemsshallbedesignedandconstructedtowithstandtheintendedservice.
8.1.3 Chimneys,whererequired,shallbeconstructedandinstalledinaccordancewith NFPA
211,StandardforChimneys,Fireplaces,Vents,andSolidFuelBurningAppliances.
8.1.4* Exhaustsystemsshallbedesignedandconstructedtowithstandforcescausedbythe
ignitionofunburnedfuel,orshallhaveprovisionstorelievethoseforceswithoutdamaging
theexhaustsystem.
8.1.5* Lowpointsinexhaustsystemsshallhavedrains.
8.2Installation.
8.2.1 Exhaustsystemsshallbeconnectedtotheenginetopreventtheescapeofsparks,
flame,orfluegaswithinthestructure.
8.2.2 Engineexhaustsystemsshallhaveoneormoreflexibleconnectorsifnecessaryto
minimizetheriskofaleakintheengineexhaustsystembecauseofenginevibrationor
thermalexpansion.
8.2.3ExhaustSystemTermination.
8.2.3.1* Exhaustsystemsshallterminateoutsidethestructureatapointwherehotgases,
sparks,orproductsofcombustionwilldischargetoasafelocation.
8.2.3.2 Exhaustsystemterminationsshallnotbedirectedtowardcombustiblematerialor
structuresorintoatmospherescontainingflammablegases,flammablevapors,or
combustibledusts.
8.2.3.3 Exhaustsystemsequippedwithsparkarrestingmufflersshallbepermittedto
terminateinDivision2locationsasdefinedinArticle500of NFPA70,NationalElectrical
Code.
8.2.4 Wherenecessarytopreventpersonnelburns,exhaustsystemsshallbeguarded.
8.2.5 Exhaustsystemsshallbeametal,masonry,orfactorybuiltchimneywheretheypass
throughafloor,ceiling,attic,orconcealedspace.
8.2.5.1* Ifanengineexhaustconnectstothesameflueasotherfuelburningappliances,the
engineexhaustshallentertheflueadistanceofatleast1timestheequivalentdiameterof
theexhaustpipeorductaboveorbelowtheleveloftheotherappliancevent(s).
8.2.5.1.1 Commonventingshallbepermittedwhereappropriatecalculationsdemonstrate
thattheexhaustfromtheenginedoesnotreducetheperformanceoftheotherappliance(s).

8.2.5.2* Anengineexhaustthatwilldischargeatpositivepressure(greaterthanatmospheric
pressure)shallnotenterthesameflueasanappliancethatreliesonnaturaldrafttovent.
8.2.5.2.1 Commonventingshallbepermittedwhereappropriatecalculationsdemonstrate
thattheexhaustfromtheenginedoesnotreducetheperformanceoftheotherappliance(s).
8.3ClearancefromExhaustSystemswithExhaustGasTemperaturesofLessThan
760C(1400F).
8.3.1 Exhaustpipesandductsshallhaveclearancesofatleast225mm(9in.)toadjacent
combustiblematerials,exceptasspecifiedin 8.3.2and8.3.3.Theclearanceshallbe
measuredfromtheoutsidesurfaceoftheexhaustpipeorduct,notfromanyinsulationthat
mightbepresent.
8.3.2 Exhaustpipesandductspassingdirectlythroughcombustibleroofsshallbeguardedat
thepointofpassagebyventilatedmetalthimblesthatextendnotlessthan225mm(9in.)on
eachside(aboveandbelow)ofroofconstructionandareatleast150mm(6in.)indiameter
largerthantheexhaustpipeorduct.
8.3.3 Exhaustpipesandductspassingdirectlythroughcombustiblewallsorpartitionsshall
beguardedatthepointofpassagebyoneofthefollowingmethods:
(1)

Metalventilatedthimblesnotlessthan300mm(12in.)largerindiameterthanthe
exhaustpipeorducts

(2)

Metalorburnedfireclaythimblesbuiltinbrickworkorotherapprovedfireproofing
materialsprovidingnotlessthan200mm(8in.)ofinsulationbetweenthethimble
andcombustiblematerial

8.4*ClearancefromExhaustSystemswithExhaustGasTemperaturesof760C
(1400F)orGreater.
Exhaustsystemswithexhaustgastemperaturesof760C(1400F)orgreatershallcomply
with NFPA211,StandardforChimneys,Fireplaces,Vents,andSolidFuelBurning
Appliances.

Chapter9ControlandInstrumentation
9.1AllEngines.
Eachengineshallbeequippedwithanautomaticenginespeedcontrol.
9.2ReciprocatingEngines.
9.2.1ReciprocatingEngines7.5kW(10hp)orMore.Enginesof7.5kW(10hp)or
moreshallbeequippedwiththefollowingprotectivedevices:
(1)

Deviceforhighjacketwatertemperatureorhighcylindertemperature

(2)

Deviceforlowlubricatingoilpressureor,inthecaseofasplashlubricatedengine,
