Background and Rationale

Soil moisture has been a great factor in affecting plants growth, in the field for
farming and agriculture. Moisture on soil is one of the important ingredients in having
a healthy crop. Thus, monitoring the soil moisture using soil moisture sensor can
greatly help crops to maintain its average moisture and prevent them from drying.

The sensor can help in measuring the moisture level of the soil. These sensors also
measure the volumetric water content in the soil. With the conductive property of
water, a probe is inserted to the ground to test the soil moisture level. Using the IOT
technology, the data from the sensor readings is passed to the web for remote
monitoring.

The advantages of monitoring the moisture level of the soil are to keep them from
dehydration and prevent the crop or plants from drying up due to lack of rain and
improper irrigation.

Objectives/ Statement of the Problem

Objectives:

The objective of this project is to maintain the desired soil moisture for suitable
farming using humidity sensor. It can detect and control the moisture in the plant. The
data from humidity sensor is send to the web for remote monitoring. This project also
includes sending the data to the pumping system to control the amount of water
delivered to the plants.

To develop a system that automatically regulates the moisture of the soil.

To measure the response of the plants to specific environmental conditions.
To be able to avoid the chance of plants damage

Statement of the Problem:

Soil moisture plays a key role in the life of the plant. Nutrients in the soil solution
provide the plant with the food it needs to grow. Maintaining the desired soil moisture
and knowing when to water the plant are two important aspects. To do this
automatically, sensors and methods are available to maintain the soil moisture and to
determine the required amount of water needed. There are times that irregular
watering leads to mineral lose in the soil.

Methodology

In this section discusses the methodology that is used in this project. This
methodology plays an important role in implementing this project.

Soil Moisture
Soil moisture sensor is used to measure the volumetric water content of
soil. Measuring soil moisture will help farmers manage their irrigation systems
more efficiently. Knowing the exact soil moisture conditions on their fields, not
only are farmers able to general use less water to grow a crop. They are also
able to increase yields and the quality of the crop by improved management of
soil moisture during critical plant growth stages.

Overall steps to achieve the objectives are:

i. Testing the microcontroller functionality.
ii. Upload the program into the Arduino Board using Arduine IDE Software.
iii. Testing the soil moisture sensor.
