Textbook: Grammar Troublespots: A Guide for Student Writers by Ann Raimes

Course Objective: to improve overall accuracy in writing and grammar in the following ways:

Review the rules of specific grammar patterns which cause the most difficulty for advanced level non-native speakers of English

Identify and correct common grammar errors in writing

Monitor your own “checklist” of frequent grammar errors

Practice grammar in real contexts relevant to everyday written communication such as memos, emails, and letters

Students must participate in class and complete the homework assignments.

Week 3 Subordination (Adjective, Adverb and Noun Clauses) (15, 18) Proposals/Persuasive Letters

Week 4 Subordination (continued), Gerunds and Infinitives (16) Positive Response Letters

Week 5 Passive Voice v. Active Voice (9) Essays & Citation (20)

Week 6 Conditionals (19) Negative Responses

Week 7 Articles (13), Prepositions & Phrasal Verbs (17) Editing Practice

Week 8 Modals (in multiple tenses) (10) Workshop day: bring your own project
