Academic Year 2016-17 (Term IV)

Finance Area Elective Course for BM Students On

Financial Analysis, Planning & Control (FAPC)

The Course Outline

The Focus of the Entire Course
This course would be conducted in such a manner so as to ensure that the focus is
more on practical aspects of FAPC activity rather than on theories and academic
inputs. In other words, the course has been specially designed to be highly practically
oriented in order to ensure that the students undergoing this course would be well
equipped to handle any real life FAPC issues on their own which they may encounter
in their career at a later date. It needs to be remembered that FAPC is an elective
course in the domain of Corporate Finance. Now, in general, any elective course in
the domain of Corporate Finance would invariably have very strong interfaces with
Fundamental Accounting and Basic Corporate Financial Management Concepts
(FAPC being no exception to this general rule). Those students who would opt for this
course with the hope of obtaining high quality academic inputs would be utterly
disappointed because that is certainly not the focus area of the FAPC Course AT ALL.
FAPC (as a course) would essentially focus on Corporate Finance in Practice. In
other words, this course would ONLY ensure that the students become adequately and
appropriately equipped to put the corporate finance concepts into practice in an
effective manner after developing a reasonable degree of appreciation about the
practical realities encompassing the commercial world.

Planning & Control tools and techniques as an essential and integral component of
Management Information System (MIS) for the purpose of the entire financial decision
making process.
To enrich the learning process through exposure to real life cases / business situations and
project work.

Study Material
The course material (to be distributed in class from time to time) comprises theories, practical
problems (wherever applicable) and case studies. It may be noted that the topics covered in
various sections of the handouts may be considered as the syllabus of the above elective course
for all practical purposes. The FAPC handouts (along with the handwritten exercise book where
you may be maintaining the class notes) would finally translate into pretty exhaustive course
material by their very nature.
As this course is a specially designed practically oriented course (and probably unique by nature
- both in structure as well as contents), no specific book would be referred for this particular
course. While conducting this course, the concerned faculty member would be providing
handouts, various articles, write-ups and cases (to be distributed in class from time to time)
related to the subject matter, which would be exhaustive by nature and hence, the same would
comprise the course material and suggested readings for this elective course for all practical
purposes. Moreover, the entire learning process would be facilitated through group assignments /
group projects which would enrich the overall understanding of the subject matter.

Important Note (Additional Points)

The FAPC Assignments (comprising the Workshop & The Assignment)

would be highly demanding by their very nature and these Group Projects
would promise substantial learning value provided the same is sincerely and
methodically done by students.

The FAPC Assignment (namely Company Analysis Detail Study of the

Selected Company with Appropriate Focus) would be based on a real life
financial analysis & planning exercise and once this Report is submitted to
the concerned faculty member, the same would be followed by an individual
viva-voce exercise of the concerned group members. The evaluation of this
component would only be released once the viva-voce exercise is adequately
and appropriately conducted by the concerned faculty member. Hence, it
may be noted that, so far this particular assignment is concerned, the
faculty may do differential grading among the students pertaining to the
same group provided the performance in the viva-voce calls for such
differential grading.

FAPC Elective Course (BM II AY 2016-17, Term IV)

ASSURANCE OF LEARNING (AOL)

In this course, the students would be tested (primarily) on the following dimensions,
A) Decision Making Ability
B) Functional Knowledge (Conceptual Understanding & Practical Applications)

Decision Making Ability

The FAPC Elective Course is characterized by two regular written examinations,
namely, Test No I (Weightage = 20%) and the End Term Examination (Weightage =
40%). Both of these written examinations would include one (1) question which would
specifically test the skills of students in respect of their ability to take decisions (in
context of issues related to financial analysis, planning & controls). Such questions
would be so structured so as to enable the concerned students to exhibit their skills in
respect of the following three key parameters of a decision-making exercise,
a) Appropriate visualization of the business problem
b) Conducting critical analysis of the information provided
c) Narrowing down on a suitable solution

Functional Knowledge
The FAPC Elective Course is characterized by two group assignments / exercises,
namely, The Working Capital Workshop (Weightage = 15%) & The Company Analysis
Report (Weightage = 25%). These assignments would test the functional knowledge of
the students. The assignments / projects would be so designed so as to ensure that
students get adequate opportunity to demonstrate their skills in respect of the following
two key attributes related to functional knowledge,
a) Identifying conceptual frameworks
b) Application of conceptual frameworks
